As a Sooner grad (class of 1979) i always hated the Texas Longhorns. The color Orange still makes me want to puke. Nebraska, on the other hand, was our Respected Opponent. If Nebraska beat us (as they often did) i would root for the Huskers in the Orange Bowl. Sounds like you did the same in reverse. I thought that it was sad when the Huskers left for the Big "10." Likewise for the Sooners' upcoming move to the SEC meat grinder. RIP "Big 12."
Always looked forward to New Year’s Night and flipping over to NBC to hear the iconic voice of Don Criqui calling the Orange Bowl. And seeing a Big 8 team like Nebraska or Oklahoma playing any one of a dozen teams trying to knock them off. Great times. Wish I could go back to that.
Right back in the 90s I used to root for fsu and Michigan cause they kicked butt but I remember my grandpa telling me that OU used to be like that play like that in go the orange bowl little did I know.
I was at this as a PSU freshman. The Sooner fans were great and we stayed in a giant RV on the Orange Bowl lot for nearly a week. OK was just too fast for us and you could feel them wear us down with that speed. Congrats, and thanks for the memories, we would get our victory the next year.
playininjapan Believe me, I was worried about JoPosh and Nittany Lions. Penn St came in undefeated and pinpoint focused. But that game was hard-hitting! That was in-the-trench football.
@@leemontgomery7914 The final score was a bit misleading, OU scored a TD pretty late when they were already up 9. But a pretty solid win for OU. They showed why even though they were #2 in the country, they deserved to be 7 point faves in this game. They also got lucky when Miami decided to take the day off against UT in the sugar bowl, cuz otherwise Miami is #1.
It's hard to believe a true freshman QB running any offense at the Division I level, but for Jamelle Holieaway to run the OU wishbone like he did was out of this world. I saw them three times that year, I also saw Steve Davis, Thomas Lott, JC Watts and Holieaway was the best of all of them. As a true freshman who didn't even get to play hardly at all in the first 5 games of the year. Just amazing.
College football is awesome but it will never be as good in my opinion as it was back in the 80s when all the bowl games (the important ones) were played on New Years Day just like this classic Orange Bowl game in 1986.
@idoj654123 wait what are you talking about? Cooper coached against Michigan once while at ASU in the Rose Bowl and ASU won. Cooper's problem was he was terrible at beating his rivals. He never beat UofA while at ASU, despite often having the better team, and of course struggled to beat Michigan.

As a Penn State Fan. This is one I'd like to forget. But. PSU's defense in this game. What an effort. A harbinger to what they accomplish the next year.
Oklahoma won this game at the line of scrimmage including linebackers flying all over the place on defense. Let's not forget Lasher splitting the uprights building a lead with 4 VIP field goals.
Kansas got us in basketball in title game. We had Stacy king mookie blaylock. The greats in this video though I mean Jackson Carr Tillman holloway Collins box d jones great players and legends in OU football
Man that triple option, when run to perfection, really tears teams up. But that is a lost art these days. I'd be shocked to see any team run it very well.
Looks like Oklahoma out-linebackered Linebacker U in this one. That and the speedy backfield. The Wishbone has become a relic and I can see why. It's too tight and too crowded. It requires a running quarterback and they are often prone to fumble when they have so many options including cutting upfield. But the Wishbone was to the late 60s-70s and 80s what the Spread has been for the 20 thousands and 20 teens.
Someone commented that Oklahoma was too fast for Penn State. Nonsense. Most teams Penn played were faster than them but because of great coaching and quality players that Joe recruited, they overcame that fact and would almost always find a way to win. Remember the Miami game? Oklahoma was the better team that day, but Penn came back following year and beat them.
@OUfootballAuthority Georgia Tech runs it but man did we stuff them in the Orange Bowl (The Iowa Hawkeyes.) College coaches are very turnover conscious today so perhaps that is why the triple option has lost favor. Too many fumbles. They seem to prefer running a mobile QB out of a shotgun spread formation. Less fumbles and more passing options perhaps.
@thoostorm4 Pretty sure that was the 1987 season.......we lost the Orange Bowl national title game in January 88 and then we lost the NCAA Tournament Game in March 88.
@@franklinbolander1916 Yes I know this video is from the Jan 86 Orange Bowl. I was replying to another comment about the year OU could have won both the football and basketball national titles, which was the 87 football and 87-88 basketball years.
Even though this was a national championship team, it was not the best OU team under switzer. That team would have been their 86 team, which pitched 5 shutouts plus held Arkansas in the orange bowl, without Bosworth, scoreless until maybe 1-2 minutes were left. They pretty much blew out everybody but Miami and Nebraska. If not for Miami, they probably win 3 titles from 85-87.
Coach Jimmy Johnson knew how to stop the wishbone (4-3 defense). He didn't have the athletes at O-State, he did at Miami. The Sooners had an amazing run those three years and had it not been for Miami (FL) they would've had a 3-peat.
I knew i was known when Jamelle came to my door in Carson where we're from to buy some weed. 1987. And he was wearing a Miami sweater. I'm like, fool what are you doing with that sweater on!!! Best option qb college has ever seen. Major Harris in a close second
@Randall Denison Eric crouch not church and Frazier has two titles should have three but refs screwed us in title game against Florida state in 93 respect your opinion but no way there better than touchdown Frazier
no comments about Penn State. They had a great team. And of course Joe Paterno was the greatest. If i had more ability i would have loved to have played for him. Oklahoma was very good and deserved to win, but let's give State some positive comments.
UH.....NO!!!!!!!! They beat Kansas 63-14 in 1988. You're thinking of 1984 when Aikman (a true freshman) subbed for an injured Danny Bradley and lost 28-11.
They were such an awesome team in 85. Respect from Nebraska
They were even better in 86 too.

“Only”
Season not game
The LA Lakers won the NBA title in 1981-82 and made 13 three pointers in the entire regular season.
I remember the one announcer was very pro-Nitanny Lion. At the end, he barely wanted to announce the national champs were the Sooners.

There was a lot of turn overs in this game, but in the end, it was the speed of oklahoma that penn state couldnt control
