I agree 100% with all of these but the biggest one that helped me was coming out of auto mode! Once I learned what each thing changed about my exposure and how it would effect the image, I forced myself to use manual mode and never went back!!
Good advice thank you. I say practice practice practice to get better.
great video, thanks for taking the time! i'd love to see a video formatted like this for a bit more advanced photographers. i'm in my second year and i've noticed that my focus has shifted from learning the technical side of using my camera to how i want to present my art in my "style". I'd be very interested to hear others speak about their tips for second or third year. thanks!
Great suggestion! Thanks
This Video is just perfect! Thank you 💪🏽
Great tips, Marc! I signed up for TSOP last month and I'm enjoying the Complete Guide to Photography. Thanks for all you are doing to help us learn!
You're welcome Gilbert 👍😊
Really enjoying the videos and great tips. I’m a novice in photography and only been out 4 times this year taking photos, and enjoying the journey. I’ve basically went straight into manual mode and raw.
I’ve noticed the difference in this sort space of time how far I’ve come. And what the school of photography videos in the last few days has done, has helped me understand a little more about photography.
Thank you
Really glad our videos have helped you! For all our free tutorials go to www.theschoolofphotography.com/tutorials 👍
This really helped outline the basics for me, love your content, thank you
Glad to hear it!
All new comers and not so new should get your book which is put together in a easy constructive way and even though we might have been involved in photography for some time we sometimes get stuck in our ways so it’s good to get back to the basics at times, I have not been active myself for a while because of health problems but hopefully to get back into it soon.
Thanks Vic 👍
Great tips Marc even for a seasoned photographer like me, It's all to easy to turn the dial to auto and shoot away, I sometimes force myself to get my Pentax K 1000 out and go back to basics, fully manual and no review screen.
I've just started following you as a beginner, and I'm already understanding little.
Thanks for this.
You're very welcome!
Again more simple basic information, just what l want in a listen and learn video, thanks you guys rock!
Thanks Neil 👍
I've just started getting into Photography, but already I have seen a lot of tips for newcomers videos and this is my favourite by far. Really helpful tips, thanks.
You are welcome Lee 😊
Great video! I'm a neophyte photographer and when I want someone to pose a certain way, I demonstrate the pose to them so they know exactly what I'm talking about. Most of the time it works well.
Thanks for sharing Annie!
Great Video I needed to bear this. Thank You so much for sharing.

If there are any beginners out there. Do hesitate and do the TSOP course. Its fantastic. I made the mistakes Marc has said above. But now gone to basics. Im learning so much better. You can take your time, if it takes you longer on 1 thing. It doesnt matter. Take your time and it will finally click. Saying that Photography you are always learning. So please go and follow TSOP. Its well worth the money
Thanks Penny, glad you like our courses 👍
Very helpful nice video im going to follow you in the further Thanks mate 👍

Great video. Thanks
You are welcome!
This is an enjoyable video. I never thought of using a lens hood. I like the idea of lens hood.
Thank you!
Marc your simplicity and use of your students to demonstrate and illustrate really is excellent....something I don’t see on many RUclips lessons
Thanks 👍
I'm in my 3rd year of photography, and still feel that my photos are... Well sometimes they are good, but most times they are terrible.
I struggle with consistency. But I appreciate it when I watch videos like this where I'm encouraged to allow myself to learn from my mistakes.
I'm getting better; it's gradual; but I'm OK with that.
what mode are you shooting in? Are you shooting in Auto or Manual mode? there's a big difference!
Thank you.
Enjoyed that video.
Glad you enjoyed it

Great videos - great tips - 3 weeks into my photography journey and loving it, because I did the beginners course, I keep going back to it, recapping and practicing ~ my pictures aren’t the best in the world, but for me they’re incredible as I don’t use Auto at all. I look at the pictures and try and analyse what’s wrong with them and, just sometimes, what’s good about them!
What would be great would be to have some feedback on them. “That’s a decent shot you’ve got the lighting right, but if you’d done .................. it may have improved the composition” kind of feedback.
Not sure whether you offer this or whether I’d be brave enough to show you my shots!!😀
I have asked for and received answers to my questions though as I’ve been learning - great support!
My husband sat listening to one of the tutorials and his comment was “You’ve found a little gem there”!
Great news as he paid for the course.
Thanks Marc
Hi Pat thanks for the comments 👍. Upload your shots to our members area to get some feedback. Thanks

Hi Marc and Faye, just watched this excellent video; trust you and families are all well be healthy in these exceptional times.
I fully agree with all your tips, and I would like to add one which really helped me. Purchase a "Dummies guide for your specific camera" where available (newer cameras may not be supported yet). The user manual that comes with the camera in many cases leaves you totally lost and overwhelmed. The "Dummies guide" explains each control on your camera, who to use it and what effect it had on your photography, also it's a permanent reference source to use.
Marc how much does it cost to join your school, I live in Northern Ireland.
Again stay well and safe.
Thanks for the tip Michael. You can find out details of our courses here www.theschoolofphotography.com/online-photography-courses

sent that to my wife. she wants to run before walking. Great tips :-)
I wasn't stuck in auto never used it, I was stuck in the TV mode on the Canon now of course I'm in Manual , much more interesting, thank you, the thing I've always found is when someone says stop down ect., what the heck is that.

I have no DSLR camera, I used to take photo with my old IPhone 6s .Suggest me a Cheap Camera body and a pair of lens for starting the next level photography from mobile phone photography.
Hiya, you will need a digital SLR camera or compact system/Mirrorless camera with manual settings, a tripod and a desire to take great pictures!
I generally keep the original picture , as well as the post processed one for future comparison and reference .As far as portrait photography goes , I try and put my subject at ease , a few jokes might help - the only "stuffed shirt" pictures I take are for ( family) passports .
Learn to use the Exif data that comes with ( almost) every digital picture you take - this data will (usually ) include camera , lens, camera mode, aperture , shutter speed and ISO .
When I was learning photography back in the 80's , I used to carry around a notebook ,and jot down all these details- nowadays , all this info comes with every image you take (on your camera ) - good for seeing what works and what doesn't
If your camera comes with a depth of field preview button , USE IT !!!
Sir, iam a beginner of photography. I choose your online classes.
Then ur certificate will OK sir ?
Hi, you will receive a certificate of completion from us here at TSOP.
