I think the problem with high picks in general is that many are picked for their potentials and not all are ready for NBA from day 1. They could come good with some development (like Andrew Wiggins) but the expectaions are so high they are supposed to get thrown into the mix and deliver. There's also the problem of teams actually dont have a clue to use the unicorn then if the players dont deliver the media would kill the franchise on players down the picks that teams could have drafted (aka opportunity costs) so it's a no win scenario unless the player is another Luka
Everyone drafted are all based off potential with what they already are. Except your few generational player, all the lottery picks are because they have potential. They haven't played an nba game, how do you get experience before being drafted noone is "ready" for the nba for sure. You can't predict how hungry and how their work ethic will be once they get their money
This video isn't aging well already. Lauri has been on fire, but since he was never a shot blocker, he doesn't really fit the "unicorn" label anyway. Bol Bol has turned his career around, looking like the star he was projected to be before his college injury. Porzingis has been solid for the Wizards. Poku has been efficient this season for the Thunder for the first time in his young career, becoming the guy they hoped he would become. Since he was considered as a project, he has proved to be anything but a disappointment. The Chet injury likely made it easier for Poku to showcase his improvement with the extra playing time, so credit for mentioning playing time in his case. Even Dragan, who left the league, left it playing his best basketball, putting up nice per minute numbers and shooting splits. His trajectory was trending up. The numbers mentioned in this video for his Spanish team are actually very good in one of the best pro leagues in the world. He barely turned 25 and is among elite league leaders in threes and blocks Clearly he IS an NBA capable player. Like Nikola Mirotic before him, some NBA caliber players just prefer Europe. The unicorn label is anything but a "curse". It began circulating as a term referencing shot blocking bigs/centers who could shoot threes back around 2014. It may have been first applied to Ibaka, as he dramatically increased his three point shooting makes and attempts, while maintaining a high blocks count, in the 14-15 season. With that label still fresh, Porzingis was drafted immediately after that season, and he became the posterchild for the term, especially for draft prospects. Bender, because of being drafted immediately after, got a lot of that unicorn hype that took some of the shine off the label, because of his slow development. Then Bol Bol was next, holding the label throughout high school. His college injury brought more negativity around the label. But with the success of Mobley, the negative direction of putting that label on prospects has reversed trend. The recent success of these past disappointments and the spread of the label to guys like Giannis, Durant, and Embiid has made it one with positive connotations once again.
TBH I don’t think vic will be a good pick. He has already had a history of injury’s, but since he is so skilled it is overlooked. I think scoot will have a better career
@@halowarrior917 I never said RJ was top 2 projected...slamman commented the top projected pick may have a worse overall career than some1 rated lower than him due to injury concern. I stated i heard a similar argument between rj barret and zion before their draft. The argument was between fans just like the current debate. Wtf is wrong with all you yt goofballs trying to prove some1 wrong? So reread my initial comment and see if it makes sense this time
@@richeyrich2514 I'm saying the two situations are different because Vic is viewed as a generational talent, the same as Zion was. Scoot is viewed similarly, but not to the same extent. Any draft order other than those two going top two overall is wrong. The class as a whole is good, but those two are on a completely different level.
If Wembanyama suddenly can’t shoot in the NBA, he’s gonna be useless on offense. He’s too skinny and weak to use his size down low, set screens, or to get positioning for offensive rebounds. On defense, his height doesn’t really matter if Embiid, Jokic, or Giannis are putting a shoulder into his chest and knocking him into the stanchion. He’ll be a good help defender but if he goes to the Thunder, their starting lineup will be 600 lbs combined and they’ll get creampied in the paint
You touched on one of the reasons why I think he’ll struggle. He’s 7’3 and only weighs 220lbs. I know he’s young so he’ll put on weight but generally speaking guys over 7 ft have a history of back/knee/foot injuries. I hope I’m wrong though cause he seems like he has a lot of potential especially considering how the game is played nowadays
I don't think that people realize , ,mainly due internet hype, how still raw Victor is. Like, literally as we talk, in French league, that isn't even top 5 league in Europe, on team that won't be playing Euroleague , he has around 20 assists and 50 turnovers and shoots 32% for 3. Last year, at age of 17-18 ,he was borderline unplayable in Euroleague. He is very, very ,very talented, but if you will have him shoot off the dribble pullup 3s, you might as well draft somebody who is better suited for that ,let's say 6'5 guy instad od 7'4 guy. Most of those unicorns who fail, fail because they don't have actual position to play. Bender was too slow for PF, no physicality for C. Porzingis is similar, Bol is similar ( despite newfound sucess on awful team ), Thor Maker was identical ( 7 foot C without single skill for C), Mo Bamba is now looking toward the end of his nba career.... Jonathan Isaac has been broken by injuries for 3 years now. Those players are way too skinny, can't keep up with physicality, take forever to recover from injuries and when they are healthy, they kind a have no position to play.
his success in the nba will depend on his offensive performance, he will also be a good defender but with a lean body he will struggle against powerful players
I still would rather have a robust/durable big than one of these very-skinny shooting bigs. The NBA is a VERY physical league and injuries ruin promising careers all the time. Look at the top big men in the league: Giannis, Embiid, and Jokic. None of them are skinny. Embiid is built like a tank and he still gets tons of injuries (although usually not enough to hurt his game when he comes back). Beyond injuries, you need mass and strength to battle in the paint. If you can't do that, you have lost tons of the advantage on being 7 ft. If you are a perimeter player, you'd be better off being 10% more agile than 15% taller. That being said, Giannis used to be one of these skinny "unicorn" types so it is possible to develop. They just need to have Giannis' work ethic and devotion to the weight room (and food).
@Insane Ioe That's my point. The prerequisites for a big man to be a star are not "tall and can shoot" but "tall, strong, tough, mobile, and coordinated". That's the real unicorn. It's rare, but actually good. Plus, even most of the next tier of bigs fits that archetype: Ayton, Lopez, KAT (although he can shoot too), Gobert (borderline too skinny, that's why his offense is so limited), AD (back when he was good), etc. Not to mention historical players, of which there are a ton who fit the bill.
basically, most unicorns either get injured, don't evolve their game, or they weren't good in the NBA to begin with. we rarely ever get a unicorn that lives up to expectations, Kareem being the earliest case i can think of before the term was coined
Victor seems to have the talent and skills in place to become a great player in the league. However my main concern for him is his health and body. This is the first year Victor has played more than 25 minutes a game. He is going to have to build his body to be able to endure the long NBA season while okaying even longer minutes per game. If he can do this without sustaining injury and keep his skills at the high level. He will become one of the greats. During that time of development I can see him struggling at times but giving us all a glimpse into his talent.
Excellent video! Watching this, I concluded that the biggest determinants when it comes to "unicorns" are injuries and playing in a system that doesn't try to make them into what they're not. KP and LM have almost identical PERs: LM is more efficient on offense while so far this season KP has been very good defensively. "Opponents are shooting only 49.3 percent against Porzingis within 6 feet of the rim this season, which is 12.6 percent worse than the average shooting percentage from that area." I swear, most players succeed despite their coaches.
Charlotte hasn't had a 1st overall pick since Larry Johnson in 1991 and we had the worst season in NBA history in the AD draft just to get the 2nd pick lmfaooo
The hype is usually overkill just so media outlets can get clicks. But I don't know why people forget how physical the game is and Victor's frame is not ready for that yet. A 7'4 that can shoot is great but they have to be able to bully guys in the post and I don't just mean shoot over their heads. Hopefully his floor is Kristaps and ceiling is a more mobile Pau Gasol
Westbrook, Giannis, Dirk, Hakeem, Durant, LeBron and so on… “Every Unicorn fails in the NBA” A Unicorn isn’t just some tall lanky dude that can shoot, a Unicorn is a one of a kind player that is extremely rarely ever seen.
I hope Wemby succeeds because if he's even half as good as people think he's going to be a HOF level player and it'll be fun to watch Unfortunately, I can just see him being a more hyped Thon Maker
The REAL unicorn is KD. KD likes to be listed as 6'10 but the truth is he is a 7-footer. He hates being a 7-footer and has asked that he be listed as 6'10, his actual height when he joined the league at 19. He has grown since that time but prefers to be listed at 6'10.
Disappointed that the Knicks drafted KP instead of KAT? But KAT went first and you picked 4th? Why are you bringing him up? Being a Knicks fan must be confusing as hell. What American center did Knicks fans want instead? Miles Turner? He's a good player but at 12 points a game you would have run him out of town too.
OKC still tanking. What if they land Wembanyama, Holmgren becomes healthy next year and they sign Bol Bol with Josh Giddy leading the point. I like where Bol Bol has improved his wing defense. Then They trade for Kristaps Porzingis. This is a circus show but it will really be interesting. C Porzingis PF Wembanyama SF Bol Bol SG Holmgren PG Giddy Then they be OKC Unicorn Thunders.
My brother in Christ, its for laughs 😂. You should see what happens when I do livestreams and say that exact sentence. Just a inside joke for people who watch me on other platforms 😭
The Bulls off season physical training almost ruined Lauri's career. They made him bulk up without developing leg strength and explosiveness turning him into heavy immobile injury prone 3p shooter. After departing the Bulls Lauri sought help from Finland and has been training off seasons in his home town ever since on tailored program. I saw some of the benchmark numbers and for example his squats have improved more than 30% during this time. It's ridiculous, you don't improve that much just over year unless starting point is exceptionally low. A 24yrs old NBA player coming from 4th season should be physically near peak levels.
FINALLY a channel says it . because just because you're tall with a big wigspan on the role you play doesn't mean you will fully dominate on NBA level! also highschool and college scores might mean something but isn't the final hammer. Look at ben simmons. Used to be an unicorn had an amazing rookie season then look at him now.
Honestly feel like the only thing holding back wemby is them ankles. Or knees. Or any limb really. Really pray he isn’t as glass as he looks cause he could really light the whole league up.
Why? Because everyone is expecting too much from them, starting from the time they reach 6'11 at an early age. They would start to believe it and overwork themselves. We have to chill on these guys.
Amazing video and so well thought out. One tiny correction because the facts have gotten lost in the narrative. Chet injured himself on the jump up to contest LBJ. Other than being the guy he was contesting, LBJ didn’t have anything to do with the injury. One interesting thing on Poku (and you did NOT make this mistake). Twice in the last week I have heard twice in the last week people refer to Poku having not lived up to lottery stays. First, it’s ironic that people would say it since he has never played better. More importantly, wasn’t a lottery pick and he was never mocked there. At the time of the draft most expected him to go in the 20’s and so 17 was a surprise.
Thank you for the compliment 😁. And yes I realized that one from Chet; very unfortunate what happened to him. And for Poku, makes sense, i was mainly referring to him in that manner because of the ample opportunity he has had playing in OKC. But he’s arguably the rawest out of everyone I talked about
Half of these players aren't real unicorns on the level of KD and Kristaps. Victor is very clealry going to be #1 this draft. "Unicorn" term us just used to broadly to describe every 6 10 + guy with some handles who can shoot.
I see 3 issues with unicorn names. The first is injury concerns. The second is being overvalued initially. Last and most importantly, NBA teams are simplifying offenses to maximize their stars. This removes their biggest advantages. Those being punishing switch defenses and utilizing their offensive versatility.
People need to stop getting excited over these rookies. They fizzle out cause they think they are too good. They don't take coaching advice amd aren't commited to the game. Lebron Kobe Mj Kawahi and a few others are the exception. They have great personalities suited to the game. They are confident, commited, loyal and willing to play through the shit.

"who tf is Tingus Pingus" the fact people still call him Tingus Pingus 😭
Micheal Rappanport made a banger bro 😂😭
I think Dirk has to be the OG unicorn. He was a unicorn before unicorn was a thing.
unicorn has to be athletic and has some guard skills, Dirk is non of those 2
"The real reason youtubers use clickbait!?" should be the title of this video.
Well good thing victor isn't a unicorn he's an alien
You can say that again 😂
That's what I'm saying. Scoot looks like the best guard prospect since Kyrie. I'd be ecstatic if my team landed Scoot.
I heard a similar argument between zion and rj barret pre draft 👀
@@richeyrich2514 really? Because I heard it between Zion and Ja. RJ was never in that top 2 discussion.
Unicorns usually have 1 major problem. Majority on this list had injury problems.
😂😂 “WHO DA FUCK IS TINGUS TINGUS” 😭😭
DOES THIS FUCKER EVEN HAVE HIS GREEN CARD 😭
Wish you all the blessings bro your channel really underrated keep up the great content
Problem with those tall lanky guys Who also jump outa the Gym are their knees and ankles. Usually they dont last long.
Great analysis and breakdown of how he may struggle! You got great insight
“Who the fuck is tingis pingis?” 💀💀💀💀
Funny thing is at this moment Lauri is playing out his mind
And I’m glad to see it 💪
I still would rather have a robust/durable big than one of these very-skinny shooting bigs.
VW will need to put on at least 50 lbs of muscle in the next few years, or his NBA career will be shorter than Yao's.
@@shaft9000 40 lbs might be enough. I'd have to see him at that weight to know.
Why did Stephen A Smith age so much over those 7 years he looks like 20 yrs have passed lol
Shared trait for all Knicks fans
Bol Bol and Lauri both killing it rn
basically, most unicorns either get injured, don't evolve their game, or they weren't good in the NBA to begin with. we rarely ever get a unicorn that lives up to expectations, Kareem being the earliest case i can think of before the term was coined
Hakeem?
He's talking about K. Abdul-Jabbar
During that time of development I can see him struggling at times but giving us all a glimpse into his talent.
that no homo finna get your sponsor card revoked 💀
Nah 😂. They watch the videos before I make them live. If you use my channel for a sponsorship you know what you’re getting into 😘😂
Meh, the PC po-po are nothing but The Miserable seeking company.
_Fuck bitches, get money.....and stay thirsty, my friends._
Excellent video! Watching this, I concluded that the biggest determinants when it comes to "unicorns" are injuries and playing in a system that doesn't try to make them into what they're not. KP and LM have almost identical PERs: LM is more efficient on offense while so far this season KP has been very good defensively. "Opponents are shooting only 49.3 percent against Porzingis within 6 feet of the rim this season, which is 12.6 percent worse than the average shooting percentage from that area." I swear, most players succeed despite their coaches.
i just want to see what he has to say about lauri now fr
Everything you said about lauri in the video is currently happening while he is on the jazz he is a all star starter right now
Charlotte hasn't had a 1st overall pick since Larry Johnson in 1991 and we had the worst season in NBA history in the AD draft just to get the 2nd pick lmfaooo
"who tf is tingis pingis"🤣
“Tingus Pingus” “Lativi-uh” words that resonate in icon New York Citizen.
He’s not a unicorn, he’s a alien
You forgot Andrea Bargnani in Toronto he was brought in from Italy to be the next Dirk Nowitzki
"Who duh fuck is Dis?!? Who duh fuck is Tingis Pingis?!?!?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tingus Pingus will always make me laugh.
Adam silver in the draft sounds like Willy wonka from Charlie and the chocolate factory is that just me
The hype is usually overkill just so media outlets can get clicks.
@Insane Ioe fr people acting like kd was the second best player behind lebron all those years if kd can do it
Tingus Pingus just dropped 41 points yesterday
Markkenan has been an all star this season
3:27 I fell down to my kneeees when the kristaps came-lil durk
I died at “Latingis Pingus” lmao
Porzingis didn’t fail he made an all-star team for crying out loud!
Westbrook, Giannis, Dirk, Hakeem, Durant, LeBron and so on…
“Every Unicorn fails in the NBA”
A Unicorn isn’t just some tall lanky dude that can shoot, a Unicorn is a one of a kind player that is extremely rarely ever seen.
with that logic literally every nba player is a unicorn
Unicorns have knees, ankles, and a lot of bones in their feet ... then all the ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and, and, and ... makes for tough odds.
Its sad what happened to Porzingas, i still love seeing him play
I hope Wemby succeeds because if he's even half as good as people think he's going to be a HOF level player and it'll be fun to watch
Unfortunately, I can just see him being a more hyped Thon Maker
Kristaps was no fit for the Mavs. Luka needs a Superstar but not another shooter. They need a Forward that is athletic and dunks
C Porzingis
PF Wembanyama
SF Bol Bol
SG Holmgren
PG Giddy
Then they be OKC Unicorn Thunders.
My brother in Christ, you don’t have to keep saying no homo. We’re grown. Lool you’re talking about tall and lanky ass human beings, we get it🤣
My brother in Christ, its for laughs 😂. You should see what happens when I do livestreams and say that exact sentence. Just a inside joke for people who watch me on other platforms 😭
Let's be honest Lauri was a product of bad coaching not bad playing or being a straight up bust
Kristaps was an All-Star though... I wouldn't say that he failed
Honestly feel like the only thing holding back wemby is them ankles. Or knees. Or any limb really. Really pray he isn’t as glass as he looks cause he could really light the whole league up.
Lotta people don't realize Dragan Bender is Jonathan Bender's son.
Why? Because everyone is expecting too much from them, starting from the time they reach 6'11 at an early age. They would start to believe it and overwork themselves. We have to chill on these guys.
30:13 this man said freshmans lol
Bol bol is starting now and is looking great!
3:54 Of course you haven't heard from Latvia because you are an US American
Victor will become AD. Top 5 at his peak but he won't have a Giannis/Jokic MVP type run
Unicorns in the league are pretty rare when it comes to how long they last and wrongfully titled.
KP didnt really fail Dumb arse title bro. He a monster!
But he’s arguably the rawest out of everyone I talked about
@@Alvini_Linguine you were completely accurate on Poku.
Surprised you didn’t add Jaren Jackson Jr to this this. One of his nicknames is unicorn so
Jaren Jackson all star level
Personally I think the first unicorn was Ralph Sampson.
I have watched every Porzingis game and I think this season he is better than in his unicorn times
This video dropped before this season, he only had a small amount of time with the wiz
Where is this Lativa that you speak of?
lauri is being used well again this year in Utah!
AND I AM GLAD TO SEE IT! CAREER YEAR FOR LAURI! 🔥
"Lativa" lol
Markkanen becoming MVP now
3:52 Tingas *PINGAS*
calling a bunch of players a unicorn kinda defeats the purpose
"I've never heard of Lativia"
He may not have liked the pick but at least he learned some geography despite mispronouncing the country's name. 😑
MARKANNEN doing great right now.
Half of these players aren't real unicorns on the level of KD and Kristaps. Victor is very clealry going to be #1 this draft.
"Unicorn" term us just used to broadly to describe every 6 10 + guy with some handles who can shoot.
It’s crazy cause the Jazz are now on top of the league with Lauri Markkanen being the leader of one of the most well rounded offenses in the league
the jazz are 9th now but they had a good run
@@sheepcloud4203 6th*, the Jazz are legit
Well, every team wants a KD type player on their team.
Yeah buts rare KD plays like a guard no other 7 footer can do that
