My bichon, Maxilla, is now 7 months old and I got her at 3 months. I was very lucky as she slept through the night in her crate all the way till the next morning. She loved her crate. Now she sleeps on my bed and gets up and potty’s by herself. She still loves her crate but only visits it to sleep in now and again ! Beautiful puppy. Very hyper breed ❤️
@vzee8037 . I made her crate totally comfy by putting a soft pillow to line the bottom of the crate; i bought her a little sheep with a beating heart, which slept with her; I put a thick blanket over the crate leaving the front door area open (so she could see what was going on; I put treats in there so the crate was (and still is) associated with good things enjoyable experiences. I then slept on the floor next to her for 4 weeks with my fingers inside the side of the crate so she knew I was nearby. If you are unable to sleep next to the crate, put the crate in the same room as you or get a t-shirt or clothing that smells ofyou (with no buttons etc) in the crate so the dog feels that you are there. She was trained to potty indoors with paper mat and to potty outdoors on her walks which were min 30 mins 4 to 6 times per day. Indoors I always encouraged her by putting high value treats on the potty mat and said the word "potty ' every time. When she used it I said "good girl " in a soft voice. I also had potty mats in a large play pen and encouraged her to potty there also by using high value treats followed by positive reinforcement. Consistency and patience is key alongside a food rota. Puppies eat 3 times a day and need to potty 30 mins after eating. Small dogs can't hold their bladder as puppies as the bladder is small, so regular outdoor walks is necessary, and as the pup gets older the bladder gets stronger.
@vzee8037 . She was crate and pad trained. She also has a travel crate now and loves both of them. If you need any further assistance please do not hesitate to get in contact. She is 3 years old in May and she still has a food and potty schedule of 2 meals a day and 3 potty breaks / walks per day min 30 mins each first thing in the morning before breakfast; at 1.00 pm; last meal of the day at 3.00 pm and last potty break at 6 pm. She has been totally house trained for almost 2 years. She's really good. I can even leave her for 8 hours in a puppy proof room with her bed, a crate interactive toys and treats for 8 hours (a "one off"), and she is good as gold and will wait for me to return. 😁
Hey lovely, my husband & I will actually be picking up our bichon frise puppy in a couple of days! We’re so excited 😆 just a question... how did you go about potty training Riley? We live in an apartment.
oh my sweetness! I am so excited for you. I still give kiss and hug attacks to Riley everyday because he is the cutest. Bichons are a little stubborn and it might be frustrating the first 6 months but just continue to keep taking them out. Eventually they will sit at the door when they want to go outside. Give treats right away when they potty outside and say YES. Give lots of praise. Take outside every hour if you can!
Domareena, make sure you have a lot of carpet spot remover and are prepared for the separation anxiety. I speak from experience of 15 years with my Bichon.
Are bichon puppies normally nervous when you first take them home at 8 weeks old? And hiw long does it take before they get fully comfterable with you and come running to you for hugs and play time?
Hello! Yes - all puppies are usually alittle nervous the first few days as they adjust to their new surrounding and being apart from their siblings and mama! But lots of treats, quality time and cuddles help a lot!
Thank you!! He doesn’t. We made sure to let him experience lots of different things at an early age so he doesn’t bark unless he hears someone at our door or is playing :) he is a good boy!
Hey Annie! I found your channel because I'm also from Toronto :) We are also looking to adopt a Bichon and wondering if you can share information on where you got your puppy Riley, pls? (I've followed you on IG too if you want to DM there!) Thanks so much! I've subscribed for more adventures on your channel 💗

How did you train her to go potty? Crate or pad trained?
