Played this at a board game marathon a few months back. Crazy good fun. Super swingy but in a fun way. Every decision you make is exciting. When you're in front you are always worried by how you're going to get screwed by those behind you. When you're behind you have the puzzle of navigating better through the chaos in front of you.

Curious if the relatively new GMT title Charioteer has popped up on your radar. I'm really enjoying it, plays 2-6 comfortably and does a great job of mixing in some longer-term strategy amongst the usual tactics of racing games.

First off, Bad Bob..... brilliant. im surprised you get the reference. although honestly, IMO, CFR is better than any of the games mentioned in this video. its the successor speed circuit, doesn't use dice for movement, more tactical and less random than Heat, it feels like a real f1 race (according to people who enjoy that) hopefully a new edition of CFR coming soon.
This has all the Powerboats game movement rules, except in case of damage (which normally doesn't happen anyway in Powerboats). And the game "author" I remember ... I just checked old emails now, I have 28 emails in 2019 from Duncan Molloy titled "Powerboats rights", last one with his last text "Give me a little while, as our lawyer is away right now. Here more clear about this case: It has all the Powerboats movement rules, except in case of damage (which normally doesn't happen in Powerboats). The last email about the Powerboats contract I got 23 September 2019 from Duncan Molloy, with only this text from Duncan: "I think we’ll work together very well. Give me a little while, as our lawyer is away right now. I will come back to you with confirmation of the contract as soon as possible." My own last email, to remind Duncan, a week later: "Hi Duncan, Okay, let me know.". But no emails anymore from Duncan in the last 62 months, and now I get emails from people telling Joyride is Powerboats with some added things. And Duncan's name as "author". Which is not right. The movement system may look a bit different, but is the same. For example the gear pawn spots are just equal to your number of dice, that and the pawn are cosmetical, (so) wasn't in Powerboats. The 3-sided dice from Powerboats are now 6-sided with 2x number 1, 2 and 3 on it. Which is NOT a DIFFERENCE. Making 4 spots for "locked dice" may look different, but it's just choosing dice to keep and choosing dice to roll, and remove 1 or add 1 die. Just the same as Powerboats/Powerships. Etc. 😞 I messaged and emailed Duncan today to settle it. No reply yet. I could wait for his reply before writing here, because it's easy to settle, but I fear that will be waiting another 5 years "for his lawyer" again? And I'm not a "waiting type". I'm looking at the 53 emails from 2019 now. Quite bizar. This was the first email, titled "Powerboats rights": "Hi Corné, Duncan Molloy, head of board games at Rebellion Developments. I was wondering you were open to a discussion about the rights to Powerboats/Powerships? I’m a fan of the game, and would love to have a chat about it." After several emails to each-other, and a phonecall, I emailed: "Hi Duncan, I'm packing the only complete Powerships game I have here (and Powerboats expansion), which was the production sample probably, maybe the box differs a bit to the final production. Further I only have 1 sealed copy here and 1 at other place." BTW: He received it and still must have it. Later from Duncan: "For Powerboats I will make some small changes, like including the expansion, but it will mostly be the same." And some contract offers which most publishers do call "indecent", like offering EUR 2k advance to 5% for the worldwide rights forever, which is not a fair offer. I offered a normal modest contract at that time. But after this mistake and after publishing it first it should be more. So I did sent a contract today to Duncan for 5k advance to 7% for worldwide rights to sell and to sublicense. And after 3 years the option to add a year each year by adding 1k advance for each year. And my name on the box in case of later printruns. That's still a low (!) and favorable deal for the game's publisher, and okay for me to settle it. (BTW: I was preparing a cars version edition last years, not expecting this after 62 months without messages from Duncan.)
I really enjoyed the games of Joyride I've played, but I have one gripe - in the base game, only Off Roader doesn't have a sharp turn/reorient ability. The other racers effectively have the ability to eat one sideswipe and not care so much, but I found myself sideswope'd into walls constantly. Off Roader's ability to turn twice at higher speeds came up less often than I'd hoped given the size of the turns on the maps we'd played on.
i will never buy a car game for many reasons. But if i would, this would be the one out of the 3 i'd buy. Such a nice review tom! looks also like a sweet serious-and-fun-game :) How much downtime is there between turns? How long do you wait for other players to do their stuff?
I've been trying to find The One car racing game to add to my collection. Either I don't understand Heat at all after dozens of plays on BGA, or most of the game comes down to your starting hand. If someone gets to move 15 spaces on the first turn, but you only get to move 8 because your starting hand sucks, you've lost. I have tried to watch for people start out behind and manage to catch up and it doesn't seem to happen. Rallyman seems to have a bit of the same problem. You fall behind, it's hard to get past blockers. If you crash, you lose. I liked Formula De, but it's a little long. Any other suggestions?
The core mechanic of this game is remarkably similar to Powerships, even down to the dice being d3s, and damage reducing your top speed. That game's been out of print for quite a while, though I thought Allplay was planning on reprinting it.
This seems so much like Gaslands which is fantastic and all you need are some Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars. I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone looking for some car racing that you bring to the table literally and use some fun basic toys and maybe rocks.
Indeed, Gaslands takes you back to Car Wars. It's easier to learn/teach than Car Wars, but harder than Heat or the other board game racers. You can play it with just the instructions, printable turning pieces, and some Hot Wheels sized cars. You will, however, end up wanting plastic turning keys and the custom dice. Then you'll realize you got rid of all your Hot Wheels and suddenly will start wandering the toy section of Target, pretending you are buying them for a child. But you could probably get a decent setup for less than the cost of Heat. If you are into modeling, you can use HO scale stuff for terrain and obstacles. There's plenty of 3d print items already out there too. It's a fun game to customize. I know a guy who printed neoprene mats with tracks. makes it even cooler. The main downside is time. It takes a while to create cars, get set up, play, and break it all down. A short game would be 2 hours. Most of the ones I've played were 3-4.
I just cant get AMPED with cards and/or dice to race. I prefer the speed mechanic of Tiny Turbo Cars. Something that actually gets your heart pumping is important for racing.
The case is not about game mechanics like 'drafting' or 'worker placement' or 'set collection' or 'roll&move' ... well it is roll&move, but that's not the case. The whole game system of Powerboats is in Joyride. With the 3-sided (so at the D6 3-numbered) dice. The 1 die adding or removing. The keeping a free number of dice from the former turn unrolled. And rerolling your other dice if any. And in your move 1x 60 degrees turning on the hexagons grid. And then moving straight in the boat's uhhhhh car's direction after turning. Etc. The whole movement system is the same, and some things added. So Rebellion employee Duncan Molloy contacted me long ago: Logical. Placing his (so the product manager) name on the box: That's very strange behaviour at boardgame companies.
Missed the perfect opportunity to use the word phalanges instead of fingers. Phalanges is my favorite word since I heard it in Rango. Such a funny word. "Git your slimy webbed phalanges off my BOOT!"
I like that Tom experiments with his review style, this A and B camera dynamic is a bold choice, though I find myself watching for the camera change more than hearing what he's actually saying.
SU&SD should address the ongoing controversy regarding this game. Joyride is based largely on the existing game "Powerboats" without giving any credit to the original designer.
it seems that there was a proposition for a deal for a new version of powerboat, but the deal didnt stick? So officially, it's a different game "very inspirated by...".
The designers stated that they did experiment with higher player counts. But said it caused a lot more collisions and slowed the game down too much to feel happy putting more than 4 on the box.
Just want to shout out the accessibility considerations here. They made a lot of effort to make sure things could be managed visually more easily. Tom shows some of it, but doesn''t mention it. Tom already said it, but it really leans towards Heat over Thunder Road. The art on this is a little deceptive in that way. This game is about steering and racing lines, which neither Heat nor Thunder Road do. The rulebook makes turning unclear, which better diagrams could have solved, but easily solved looking at any video about the game. It's peppy, but has some meat. Wants for every expansion. Truly as sandbox game.
Joyride looked great except it would be replacing gaslands which, while a bigger commitment, really leans into the zany smashy mad maxxy theme in a way I just wouldn't tolerate being watered down and tightened up. For someone who wants a balanced game though, I definitely see the appeal.
I cannot express how much I loved playing this game. When you can cross the finishline moving backwards... is just something special. Its a nice, spicy combo of chaos, tactics and racing. HIGHLY recommend.
One important thing missing from the review, especially when you compare it to Heat and Thunder Road from the get-go: which stages of play happen in parallel and which in turns? One thing that makes Heat so good is the speed of play, when it’s mostly simultaneous and then just resolving everyone’s actions in order. Another thing that was not mentioned is that Heat goes up to 6 players. And with the simultaneous play, it’s actually best at 5-6 players IMO. I’ve had tons of fun playing it with non-gamers in larger groups due to these factors. I doubt you could do the same with Joyride (or Thunder Road). Oh, and this is a highly me-thing, but I was absolutely delighted that I was recently able to get my 7yo daughter playing Thunder Road, despite not being able to read yet, and not understanding English at all. Since you only need to remember the 4 special abilities, language isn’t a big barrier. Joyride seems to have a lot more “text” to go through in order to play it.
Sneaking in the Balatro music … Goddammit I have to play it on mute as I’ve heard that tune for, like, 16 solid days this year. 16 FULL DAYS. PS5 logs your hours on a game doesn’t it? 392 hours. Goddamn that game. I figured out an amazing Balatro legacy card game … with multiplayer & how to get those amazing combos but not need to be Stephen Hawking to figure out the maths of the score!
So if I understood the end of the review correctly Tom is buying me Joyride
Correction I think he is buying me joyride.
There is a going to be a fight to death among viewers.
Eyy stop innovating. I'm running out of shelves.

Here more clear about this case:
It has all the Powerboats movement rules, except in case of damage (which normally doesn't happen in Powerboats).
The last email about the Powerboats contract I got 23 September 2019 from Duncan Molloy, with only this text from Duncan:
"I think we’ll work together very well. Give me a little while, as our lawyer is away right now. I will come back to you with confirmation of the contract as soon as possible."

Etc. 😞

I'm looking at the 53 emails from 2019 now. Quite bizar. This was the first email, titled "Powerboats rights":
"Hi Corné,
Duncan Molloy, head of board games at Rebellion Developments. I was wondering you were open to a discussion about the rights to Powerboats/Powerships? I’m a fan of the game, and would love to have a chat about it."
After several emails to each-other, and a phonecall, I emailed:
"Hi Duncan,
I'm packing the only complete Powerships game I have here (and Powerboats expansion), which was the production sample probably, maybe the box differs a bit to the final production. Further I only have 1 sealed copy here and 1 at other place."
BTW: He received it and still must have it.
Later from Duncan:
"For Powerboats I will make some small changes, like including the expansion, but it will mostly be the same."
And some contract offers which most publishers do call "indecent", like offering EUR 2k advance to 5% for the worldwide rights forever, which is not a fair offer. I offered a normal modest contract at that time. But after this mistake and after publishing it first it should be more.
When are you going to sell "Technically Difficult" t-shirts?
I just cant get AMPED with cards and/or dice to race. I prefer the speed mechanic of Tiny Turbo Cars. Something that actually gets your heart pumping is important for racing.
I've had that on my shelf since I backed it and have never played it yet. I heard no one talking about it after it came out like at all!
@xCriticalStrikex its definitely my favorite racer. Ive played like 5 times and thoroughly enjoy the timed aspect.
3DS internet settings music? We call that Taste™️
I feel like this is Gasland ruleset in boardgame form. The only thing missing is weapons on the cars.
God damn, I just bought heat, not another temptation to sabotage my bank account. 😅
0:58 "Becoloned"? Oh, you wacky britts.
I dunno but it is the perfect pop song
Missed the perfect opportunity to use the word phalanges instead of fingers. Phalanges is my favorite word since I heard it in Rango. Such a funny word. "Git your slimy webbed phalanges off my BOOT!"
I like the olden days when Tom used a handheld microphone when recording. Good times!😊🎤
I spy a Wormrot t-shirt on the guest there! Sick!
That *was* a good question.
Big "Radlands" vibe from the art
Like the move system really. Crash rules of just pushing cars? I guess it’s ‘chaotic fun’. Id like a bit more of Car Wars weapons focus though..
Can you play with 6 players using the duel expansion? Or is the track too crowded?
The designers stated that they did experiment with higher player counts. But said it caused a lot more collisions and slowed the game down too much to feel happy putting more than 4 on the box.
This game sounds like it's the love child of Heat and RoboRally. And that's not a bad thing.
I wonder where dungeon kart fits into that love triangle
This is much better than both Heat and TR:V in my opinion.
Great review, very informative, not a game I'd like though.
Consider Death Roads All Stars for the best Fury Road car battler racing game.
...and then there is the classic Gaslands: Reloaded which has the added benefit of kitbashing your cars if you want to.
I cannot express how much I loved playing this game. When you can cross the finishline moving backwards... is just something special. Its a nice, spicy combo of chaos, tactics and racing. HIGHLY recommend.
You should give Dark Future a try.
Oh no who’s that guy in the back staring at me
Big Redline vibes
Got it, fun game!
Can I get a Wipeout themed version please?
How can you have an lcd soundsystem last show poster when they’re playing like 12 shows in New York and more throughout the year? Hmmmm Tom?
1:16 Don't say "I don't know"
i wish this supports higher player count
Oh, you should give gaslands a try 😅
So, age old question: why shouldn't I go All-In on this and just buy the base game?
Joyride seems to have a lot more “text” to go through in order to play it.
seems like a NASCAR board game.
I like board games
@@Blosteroid you're in the wrong place!
@eopatcjo oh :(

Wait, no; twas only in jest SUSD is best
Sneaking in the Balatro music … Goddammit I have to play it on mute as I’ve heard that tune for, like, 16 solid days this year. 16 FULL DAYS. PS5 logs your hours on a game doesn’t it? 392 hours.
Goddamn that game. I figured out an amazing Balatro legacy card game … with multiplayer & how to get those amazing combos but not need to be Stephen Hawking to figure out the maths of the score!
Kinda looks like a simpler version of Gaslands
But what makes Bob so BAD?
What is Quinn doing just sitting quietly by the window?
Bold of you to assume I have 2 friends.
We're not going to talk about the mannequin?
