A replicator is able to rearrange particles to duplicate an item but it loses subtlety in certain features such as the grain of wood and the tactile feel of certain material. Why do you think federation crews STILL bring back fabrics and materials from shore leaves despite being able to molecular scan an item to be replicated later?

In one of the first episodes O'Brien must repair some replicators that don't function properly all over the station. At the end he informs Sisko proudly that everything works perfectly, and he leaves. The commander orders a coffee from the replicator and after he takes a sip and realizes it doesn't taste right, he yells angry: "O'BRIEN!!!!!!!".
It would have been funny if they would have kept repeating this gag - O'Brien tries to fix things or change stuff, but keeps messing things up, while Sisko gets mad and screams "O'BRIEN!" while the sound is echoing throughout the whole space station.

There is reason to believe that copyright laws would still be in effect and digital rights management could be incorporated into the replicator operating system. Hence, if you wanted something that is an original piece of work, you'd have to buy it. It might be limited to a certain run of digital copies available (similar to an NFT), and/or have an open marketplace bid structure. Replicator patterns probably have a ton of public domain, royalty free, types, which would suit the masses. But again, if you want an exact replica of a creatively made object, it's not a free for all. Oh, and sure O'brien has the technical talent to hack the system to make a copy anyway but it would be illegal and Starfleet officers follow the law.

@@oldtwinsna8347 I don't think it really works that way. Though I can see copyright being something that Federation-made replicators would be concerned for, I don't think that it'd be that high a priority.
Another way you can see it is that a replicator may be able to produce anything within its databank, the replicator's size and database are limited. If you had a replicator that was programmed to replicate a small wooden sphere, that sphere will be replicated down to every grain. But if you wanted a cube, you'd have to find the program for the cube despite it being made from the same material. Though the computer could possibly make a code for you, something more complicated like a wind-up toy or specific tool wouldn't be easy to spontaneously generate correctly without having to design it yourself, or maybe the replicator can only replicate the parts because what you need is too large for it to create whole inside its recess. The replicator is a very miraculous machine, but even miracles have their limits.
As for the desk, Dukat may have been egotistical enough to consider making his desk a custom job from a craftsman in order to one-up his constituents, and the one that O'Brien replicated was the closest match.

As ridiculous and comedic as the Ferengi characters could be, it's important to remember that Quark killed Klingons and Jem Haddar (he just didn't think it was worth bragging about) and brokered peace treaties, Rom saved the entire Alpha Quadrant, and Nog proved that Ferengi business acumen could be invaluable to Starfleet (especially given the perennial importance of logistics).

Remember, just because you can replicate the desk, you still need the credits. working for star fleet is not free. they do have credits they earn on replace of money.
it was in the pilot and behind the scenes. but if the chief did do that, it would have been a boring episode.

d'nomar senoj No they do NOT use credits internally and they don’t get paid. Starfleet only uses money when dealing with non-Federation cultures. It would have cost O’Brian nothing to replicate a new desk.
A better explanation would be that they don’t have the pattern for Sisko’s desk on file, which why O’Brian replicated the desk he did.
Having said that, Nog could have scanned the desk and sent the guy a Holographic file.

You could just level with the captain if it doesn't get back in time. We need a critical and otherwise unavailable part to maintain readiness in a time of war. The price was the use of your desk for a few days. Deal with it. It's not like we sold your soul. For transactions involving that, talk to Garak...

Replicators, from what I gather, require a certain amount of energy stored in the ship or station that is designated for replication. Any garbage is likely converted into energy to be made into something else. In times of war, or in Voyager's case of being in the Delta Quadrant, the crew is put on replicator rations to save energy for the ship to use.

So, this show survived on plot holes. They have "industrial replicators" (per the episode where Commander Eddington steals some for the Marquis) that could replicate HUGE structures.
Just make and exact copy of Sisko's desk with that.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 4 года назад +3

But it has to be the exact copy and that is a problem if that pattern is copyrighted. It was a Cardassian station so the desk, which was originally Dukat's, may been a famed artistic piece of work by a Cardassian carpenter, a Bajoran artisan who worked for the Cardies, or even a Ferengi supplied piece. Dukat was pretty arrogant and probably demanded the most finest pieces of work in his office. So while the Federation doesn't use money internally, they would respect copyrights of other worlds. A digital rights management system could tag the pattern was a copyright and refuse to replicate it without first compensation being paid to the copyright holder. That copyright holder may refuse to sell outright or set a price so high that it would make even Quark faint at the price. Not far fetched either, as current day digital rights management on multimedia runs pretty much the same way if you want to do it legally. Being Starfleet, they would follow the laws and not pirate stuff.

I'm with Bashir, O'Brien has done a terrible job, surely they have the specs for the desk in some holoprogram and he can just replicate it instead of trying to reconstruct it from memory. Sisko was able to make an entire Bajoran ship from plans.
