This may be the best and most comprehensive band documentary ever made, and that's saying something for a criminally overlooked and underappreciated band on a national scale. It's not only a must see for any Gypsy fan, but really a must see if you 1) love early 70s Progressive/Eclectic Rock and/or 2) are interested and fascinated by the history of rock in the 60s and 70s.
Gypsy had such an interesting intersection with so many events, bands and musicians in the late 60s and 70s. The Manson Helter Skelter murders story is absolutely incredible. The residency at the Whiskey following Chicago, and the whole development of the band from Garage Rock band in Minneapolis to hippies in LA and the creation of those first few albums.
This band is so important to me and in my DNA. I lived in the Minneapolis area the first 12 years of my life, so I was "there" unknowingly for those years in the 60s. We moved to St Louis when I was 15 in 1975, and I've been in the Lou ever since except for college. I discovered Gypsy's music almost immediately when we moved to StL when I heard Dead and Gone and Gypsy Queen on KSHE FM radio. Unfortunately I missed their initial run in the early 70s, and unfortunately didn't go to the Busch Stadium SuperJam 1977 in 100 degree heat (although I remember the Jam and considered going, I knew many HS classmates who went). Obviously, I really regret not seeing that last live show with Enrico. Gypsy was constantly played on KSHE as this documentary shows.
The cool thing was that a local record store owner in StL where I frequently shopped got permission and the rights to FINALLY release Gypsy's albums on cd in 1998 or so on the Bedrock label, so I finally could hear this great music on cd (by then the debut vinyl album was going for $200>300). As part of that development, the record store owner convinced Owl Walsh to reform and start doing live shows again as Gypsy circa 1998. So since that time up until the pandemic, I saw Gypsy live about 15-18 times around different St Louis venues. Casinos, small bars, large bars, outside in parks, and mostly at the fantastic Wildey Theater where they started playing annually at the old restored movie theater starting in 2013 I think. By the end they were doing 2, even 3 shows every visit over one weekend. I am so grateful the band appreciated the diehard StL fanbase so much, as the documentary shows, and that enabled me to see them live so much in their "2nd life". I loved every live show, and it was always cool to shake hands and chat with the entire band after every show. I especially treasure my several conversations with Owl Walsh, what a character and funny storyteller! I got him to give me the whole story on the LaBianca Manson murders and some of their drug busts etc driving around in their hippie bus etc. Priceless stuff. RIP to the Irishman Owl and thanks to all band members for the music and the memories.

One of my favorite bands. My friends and I discovered Gypsy in the mid-to-late 80
s, in the whole 60's, early 70's revival as we were much too young to know them in the 70's. Almost everyone that we played their music for, loved it. Such a great band.

I was thrilled to find this film as it answered many questions for me. In hindsight, Gypsy always sounded like you could hear the future of prog-rock that was to follow shortly after.

One of their albums is called "unlock the gates". Fitting that a classic line from the movie Almost Famous is the concert promoter (played by Marc Maron) yelling "Lock the gates!" as the band is leaving in their bus. Almost famous, indeed.

I had no idea Gypsy existed until about 10 years ago, but as soon as heard their music, notably the first two albums I became an instant fan. Great band with a lot of brilliant songs and one that deserved way, way more success than they achieved, although a 40-year lifespan in the music business isn't to be sniffed at either. Great to see a full length doco chronicling the life of the band and its ups and downs - and the downs were horrendous and RIP Rosenbaum and Walsh - Rosenbaum was clearly a musical genius and Walsh, a brilliant musician himself, did a great job of keeping the band alive. The outro performance of Gypsy Queen Part 1 is superb - you could argue that Gypsy was a band of its time and that time was long ago, but this performance is fresh, modern and vibrant - just beautiful and the horns work with the song so well. If there's a DVD of the full concert, I want it!

What an outstanding documentary about one of the truly great American progressive bands. A modern day jam band way before the term was coined. On par with the Allman Brothers and Kansas. Almost famous indeed. It's wonderful to see many of the guys that played under the name Gypsy on camera telling their part of the story. I moved to America just before Christmas 1974, and discovered Gypsy through a music instrument store that had a rack of cutout LPs. Thank you Mr. Goodyear for making this highly informative film. Thank you James Walsh and the modern day band for keeping this great music alive and making new music too.

I was a first-year law student at the University of Alabama in 1971 and the local AOR FM station in Tuscaloosa played "In the Garden" (both parts) every evening...I bought the album, and subsequently wore it out...went back and bought another copy and the first one, as well...wore THEM out...I had been a musician in a band in undergrad school, but I had never heard anything as awesome as this crew...when I was a third-year student (1973-74), my roommate wore out "In the Garden," so I ended up buying yet another copy. I finally found on both albums on CD about ten years ago, and MY SON wore them out. He knew of Lordan from Robin Trower. I still have a "Gypsy" playlist that I listen to when I'm driving or working out. I never understood why this band wasn't mega-famous...in a way (to the hardcore devotee, at least) a part of you wants this music as his own little secret treasure, while still enthusiastic about spreading the word...really enjoyed watching this ...

I'm from Seattle. I was born in 1966, and we had Heart who recorded Dreamboat Annie in '76-'77, and they took off in a big way. I'd never heard of Gypsy but their talent can not be questioned or doubted; but even as I began watching this, I could just feel that there wasn't going to be a successful ending because, well, I grew up learning to play guitar by listening to Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Pat Travers Band, Rick Derringer, Rush, KISS, Cheap Trick, and of course; Deep Purple, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, Jeff Beck Group(s), etc... Seattle had a dozen bands like Gypsy... Fckn A, if Twisted Sister could make it. Or Starz, Angel, etc... I'm listening to this Band's studio recordings and their live stuff, and I'm blown away. Especially their recent live stuff - just gdmn stellar. But they didn't have the right backing, and that's heartbreaking.

I used to stand outside the bar door to hear the music coming out on the street. By the time I was old enough, they had broken up and the band didn't have all the original members though hearing James Walsh perform was a real treat.

Gypsy happened for me in my second year of college in Troy, Alabama in '72, as I sorted through 8-track tapes in the bargain bin at a thrift store...the cover art resembled a girl I knew! I took it back to the dorm to have a listen...my roommate and I were knocked for a loop! What was this stellar album doing in the bargain bin just two years after release???? Just unthinkable! This album was more a part of my college days than Foghat or even Steely Dan! The instrumental interlude on 'The Third Eye' is the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard...

I actually went to see Gypsy and Ted Nugent and remember Ted Nugent jumping off of the top of this huge Tower of speakers at the opening of his set. I didn't learn until later that James Walsh wasn't even at the show and was doing his performance and some La jail. Yes it was extremely hot and humid which St Louis was known for but we got lucky one of our buddies was working the beer stand on the field so a few joints kept us supplied with plenty of free beer. There were various incarnations of the band playing around Minneapolis and St. Louis. James Walsh started a band in Minneapolis the 80s called Jumpstreet, Jim Johnson was living in Los Angeles as a session musician and solo artist. Most members were off doing side projects, and/or joined other bands full time. Bill Lordan Joined Sly Stone and Robin Trower, Randy Cates returned to Fort Worth to work in his family jewelry business and play in bands around there. Everyone's story went a different direction and 2014 seemed to be a good point to pick back up without going on too many tangents. Thanks for the compliment, glad you enjoyed it!

This is fiction and not a documentary. It's painfully revealed by the vinyl records which doesn't exist. If this was real the records would be out there so you could actually buy them.

Acutally Sundazed Records just reissued their 1970 debut double LP. Their records are also widely accessible on the secondary market.

@@aarongoodyear Ps. I know it's out there second hand, but not in my country and paying insane customs, taxes etc for a potential messed up copy, without any chance of complaining..... like.... no thanks.
But this is so great. Can't wait til it arrives. Now I can only wish that they also reissue In The Garden.
