On a cloudy day at White Sands national park I laid down on a sandhill to take a nap. When I woke up there was a trail of a sidewinder rattlesnake below my feet. It was scary to think how close it came to me while I slept.
What amazing animals snakes are. Each snake has it's own set of skills, venom and ways to kill anyone without quilt. If I saw a snake moving that fast towards me, I would freak out so much that I would become an Olympic runner.
I lived in the high desert, Mojave area, I got chased by two them , I was walking home from the bus stop, had to drop books and run and fast I could, My German Shepard saved me from them, yes they are fasssst🤯🤯🤯
It should be noted that one of the Rattlesnakes in northwestern Mexico and the Southwestern USA is the Horned Rattlesnake also known as a Sidewinder. Bug: Fully Sedated Lizard : Half Sedated Snake: Waiting for Action Result : A Perfect shot with subject right in centre of Camera. That's how Nature Photography works.
So a half sedated lizard, terrified from JUST being handled while the humans are standing feet away, was worried about eating? And this snake wasn't scared of them either? Yeah...makes sense 😒. Although SOMETIMES they film in a captive environment, usually it takes days or weeks or even MONTHS of patient waiting. And even if it WERE filmed in a captive environment, so what? It's still actual animals doing the same thing they do everywhere else.
So they say the way it moves is also designed to limit contact with the "scorched earth" then it buries itself in the sand to hunt. Then they say the sand is cool. I dont think 1/4 inch of sand is enough to dissipate the heat. Doesn't make sense to me. I have a feeling the temp of the sand doesn't bother the snake.
Do you have to watch out for sidewinders if you're hiking through sand dunes? Can you even see them if they're buried in the sand? I want to go to somewhere like Kelso Dunes but that kind of scares me.
I saw what I’m pretty sure was a sidewinder recently on my way back down from Kelso Dunes, not in the dune itself but on the level ground with vegetation near the road. I would always wear decent boots and trousers regardless of the heat (never shorts) try not to step on any snakes and don’t do what I did which was stay on the dune after the sun had set. It was tight getting back to the road before almost total darkness.
