Where is the link to the study. We have not seen any problems with recycled bottles in Scandinavia. The problem is likely in the way it’s recycled and the manufacturing.

Researchers from Brunel University London found 150 chemicals that leached into drinks from plastic bottles, with 18 of those chemicals found in levels exceeding regulations.
And they found that drinks bottled using recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) can contained higher concentrations of chemicals than those bottled using new PET, which suggests that problems with the recycling process may be causing contamination.

"pet 1", but all PET is number "1", both new and recycled. The number in the recycle symbol is not the number of cycles, but the plastic type identifier. 1=PET , 2=HDPE, 3=PVC, 4=LDPE, 5=PP, 6=PS, and anything else is number 7.

  • @RestorationWatch

PET bottles have a coating applied inside the bottle because PET is poisonous. This is why you shouldn't reuse the bottle as the coating wears off with bending the bottle etc. The only bottles that are safe are polycarbonate. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is the other safe plastic, but not as safe as polycarbonate drink bottles.
