- Dull and downbeat, this Fantastic Four adaptation is a textbook example of how to fail at storytelling!

I never understood the hate for FF and FF: Rise of Silver Surfer. They were by no means great movies, but they were at least entertaining and competent from a filmmaking perspective.
Fant4stic is just depressingly bad, and made me appreciate the originals so much more.
I love those movies, too.
Rise of Silver Surfer was fine......until it neared the end. Then it started falling flat. The prior FF though was Fantastic. Can't say "first FF" as...there's another one prior to that.
I thought Fant4stic was better than the other 2 movies, why do people hate it if it seems like any other superhero movie? I'm actually surprised people love spiderman homecoming since when I watched it I thought people would start hating it
@@velcranoxofficials9970 why do you hate spiderman: homecoming then? You just said it without any reasons
@@soupshouldquityt4540 I don't hate it, I loved it
It just looked like something that the average internet meme creator would hate because firstly, it is spiderman homecoming, where did they get that? Secondly, because its not the actor from the classic movies that we all grew up with, thirdly because he is a pretty young actor so I expected him to get hated on, and fourthly because I saw these videos on RUclips saying how he spoiled the movie with posters and saying stuff on an interview
I love how this movie is universally called Fantfourstic.
Fanfourstic more like fanfailstic
Fanfourstic more like FanIwishIhadntwatchedthatstic
No T in it. Just fan four stick
Why is it called fanfourstic?
@@emanhdk Because the title is Fant4stic. They thought they'd make a smooth move by replacing the A.
Dr. Doom is such an interesting character. it ticks me off that they just play him as a typical mustache twirling bad guy.
His name probably didn't help.
@@G1ingy Victor von Doome?
He should gta solo movie that would be awesome
One of my favorite villains of all time… almost sympathetic if he didn’t have such a massive ego.
But to be fair, the dudes a genius magical sci-fi robot wizard, who rules a country of people who love him, and he became god for a good period of time.
To be honest, the 2005 movie looks better in comparison to the 2015 one.
It is better!
@@filmcomicsexplained I agree. In terms of storytelling and getting the characters right, it nails it despite its flaws. The 2015 movie douse neither one of those things.
@@tturnquest1 even the 2005 had better cgi than the 2015
I agree, it may not be the best, but it is entertaining.
Thanks for pointing that out Mr Obvious
These films are the perfect example of why you need a director and a cast who truly care about the story they're telling
Iron Man is a great example. It was make-or-break for Jon Favreau and Robert Downey with that one and ended up reviving Downey's career, Kickstarted the MCU and made Jon Favreau a household name.
@@filmcomicsexplained great example indeed! I love those movies partly because of the imagination that comes through in the cinematography, it wouldn't be the same had they not cared about the story.
@@filmcomicsexplained please make a video on Chronicle 2012
@@filmcomicsexplained what about Batman Returns
The director cared
i actually enjoyed the early 2000s movies probably more than i should. they’re bright and goofy but everyone involved knew exactly what they were working on in terms of a adapting this ridiculous (and loved, one of the best families in comics in my opinion) family onto the big screen, which i appreciate. plus, i think it gave us chris evans as steve rogers, which i think is one of the best casting decisions of the mcu, alongside rdj as tony stark
I don’t hate the Roger Corman one. The people in it didn’t know they were just in it for rights. They people were doing their best. And the 2000 ones didn’t suck. Just wish they did something better with Galactus. Silver Surfer was pretty good.
1-2.3 were ok. Number 4 looked horrible and it stunk of WOKE. Audiences stayed away in droves. If they kept the original director it would have been even worse.
I like the Tim Story ones myself (Galactus fart cloud aside)
The only movie I remember from my childhood is Silver Surfer, I was only 6 years old at the time but I remember enjoying it lol
The Roger Corman one at least stayed true to the property. I also like the other two. I personally think they 100% nailed Silver Surfers look and with Fishburnes voice.
@@Webshooters1 Still hope we get to see the real Galactus in the MCU soon (Maybe as the next Thanos level threat).
When you said history was “Victor von Doomed to repeat itself.” I began cheering and banging pots and pans out my Queens apt window
LMFAO!!!!!!!!!
The Tim Story FF movies have always been a guilty pleasure for me. I'm just waiting for Marvel's first family to join the MCU
Yea I hate that we never got to see the banter between Reed Richards and Tony Stark.
X-men?
@@odskeet we need a longer time but we'll get the fantastic four first
8:39, yeah, Kate Mara was wearing a wig in some scenes of the movie. She finally confirmed how disgusted she was at Trank, whom did not treat her with respect.
Any superstitious person would say that the Sue Storm role is cursed, since Alba's experience was also horrible
@@SleepySloth2705 bad writing ruined both iterations
@@SleepySloth2705 Elaborate?
They could and should have made Annihilus the villain of the film. I doubt this would have saved it, but considering everything revolves around traveling to another dimension, he makes a lot more sense that shoehorning in Doom.
Have you seen the production art? Annihilus was in it. The film looked way different in pre-production to what it ended up being :(
doom as the villain could've worked if they didn't connect him to the fantastic four. they could've had doom be the first to create the interdimensional machine but it blows up and he gets scarred like in the comics. and then off screen he becomes the infamous doctor doom. thats how you connect doom with the fantastic four without forcing an unnecessary love triangle. bigger villains like annihiilus could've been saved for the sequel.
He DESERVED criticism for his casting choices. They're all scientists, well known in their fields. They all should have been 10 years older.
To be fair, it's *mostly* inspired by Ultimate F4, where they're a lot younger
Oh man I don’t even know what was going through the creators heads while they were making it
lots of cocaïne.
Too much studio interference and Trank succumbing to the pressure.
@Bullseye Is the GOAT yea the reason why movies can be bad is because of they want it to be a cash grab
@@goldenbro439 agree, it is even worse when the movie express that by doing so damm generic, boring and overall, bad
@@alexz.8302 Trank failed the movie long before the studio took over. Hell, the studio took over BECAUSE Trank was a trainwreck. Remember that the movie was trash even before the time-skip where the studio took over.
4:00, crazy that Chris Evans was in the original Fantastic Four years before Captain America. Lol!
Both human torches got amazing roles in the mcu
Why is it crazy? He's an actor.
lots of roids to boot.
2:23, they did a documentary on the film: Doomed, The Untold Story Of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four.
This movie, Fan4stic, has the lowest rating in any Marvel movie, 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The moment you used rotten tomatoes as source made you lose any credibility...
As it should.
@J Fz
That had establishment support
@J Fz how is captain marvel that bad?
@J Fz apart from it being not great, theres not much to complain about it. Generic marvel movie.
Fanfourstic on the other hand is equally ok, til the end where it gets so bad it ruins the redt of the movie.
Fan four stic.
That just sounds like a really bad porn title.
Ehhhm..
Fant four stic
It might have been the better movie XD
That it does!
Man, the first two movies are somehow better than this one.
Hell, the GAME for the Fantastic 4 is still better than this movie.
9:25, he would later disown the film and would never direct another superhero movie again.
He didn't let Stan Lee down.
He let Stan Lee AND Jack Kirby down.
"Alright, so we've made a lot of money with our comic book movies, and with the updated technology of our time, we could really make something great. Now who do we get to direct our next Fantastic Four film? Oh, I know! How about a director who actually hates comic books and doesn't care at all about the source material?"
To be honest, they did not know (that is what I heard said in this video at least, if I heard correctly), though still, shouldn't they, you know, CHECK what he likes and doesn't like first????
So even if they did not know, that just makes it worse, that to me SHOWS the company did not care even BEFORE the film was ever set to be filmed etc. Shows me that they just wanted to fire out a quick movie to cash in on.
I am so glad that actual MARVEL are taking over these movies now (from what I have heard) and just like recent Marvel films, I hope it turns out awesome.
It's kinda like hiring someone who hates children to babysit your kids.
Character development and building, that's a waste of time.
Just skip ahead and say they've grown
chronicle 2012 film was better than fan4stic film
I remember watching it and thinking this ending is super rushed. Felt like there was a ton of missing story. You did a great job explaining what I felt. Thanks buddy.
After the success of a Joke movie, just do Doctor Doom movie. The guy was always on the line between good and evil where his evilness comes out of his very human trauma and flaws (such as intense jealousy).
I had a convo with a friend about this before, and honestly, I would kill for a movie where Doctor Doom and Magneto go against Red Skull.
Either of them solo Red skull easily. Would need some type of mcguffin for Red skull
They thought Mixheal B Jordan Star Power would have Saved the Film
4:46, this movie suffered a whole lot of production problems, including Josh Trank yelling at the cast and crew for not doing a good job on any of the scenes, Trank almost getting into a fight during filming, they cut out several action sequences from the trailer, and Trank slept with a gun after he received death threats on Twitter prior to the films release.
The money. It's always about the f*cking money.
The funniest part of this is that they try and save money thinking they'll make bank . When if they focused on the story and put a bit more money into they would've made money .
As a massive fan of the Fantastic 4 comics and team, it pains me to see that all of marvel's other comics are getting good movies and adaptations (we won't talk about X-Men) while the F4 are just getting pooped on by fox over and over again. Eventually its gonna get left behind and remembered as an unremarkable series with lackluster movies and thats really a shame because I think the F4 has a lot of qualities that make them a better watch for newer audiences than a lot of other marvel heroes
I liked the x men films even though they aren't that good they had some good action good time killers . I wonder they'll do now that marvel has it back . Like where would x men and fantastic four fit in the mcu ?
How does stuff like this even happen? You hire someone who hates the material, leave him to it. 6 months later you are shocked at the unusable nature of the film...
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was bashed too, but I really enjoyed it
Compared to this mess the League was a masterpiece
2:28 i think they got confused bout how invisibility works lol. She cant be seen, but is definitely still there. Those bullets wouldve hit her too lol
I remember watching the trailer than the movie and finding like 80% of the trailer missing in the actual movie
You forgot to talk about the - Guy who is ALWAYS chewing gum in every scene.
Fantastically unremarkable
Fanfoursticly* unremarkable.
11:23, yes, they did hate working on the film, and knew deep down that they were grossly miscast for the part.
One of the worst things about the science fair scene is that even though the teleporter works Reed's teacher says "We deal in science fact not science fiction." Even though in universe the fact that it worked makes it fact.
Fantastic four was a fascinating comic with really interesting stories that went all over the place. This is a huge missed opportunity. It could be one of the biggest franchises in the Marvel universe
Stan Lee died never seeing his most legendary work become a success.
I think he would've at least seen a rough edit of the movie
fant4stic became my litmus test for comic book movies. So far none of the released films have failed it, which to me means they're not completely devoid of fun.
I'm so glad you are shifting a bit to the critic role. Really respect your perspective within the genre.
We need a “Snyder Cut” version of every studio interfered movie that had potential.
19:58 HAHA! Dooms face looks like Twiki from Buck Rogers. Bloody Hell he does HAHA!!
In my head, 2005 FF is canon to the MCU! I never understood the hate it received but I am excited for FF4 to get the mouse treatment.
I have a black and white cast photo signed by the cast of the 90's Coreman movie.
They appeared at a local comic con in Miami and by then, they sorta knew it wasn't happening.
fan4stic just feels like a big migraine in one project
and i actually felt a little migraine when i looked at the fant4stic footage
In a punisher comic, the 2015 version of fan4stic where killed.
I want the audio from the meeting that lead to them thinking naming it "Fant4stic" was a good idea. Must have been a lot of drugs because nobody in a sober mind would think that was a good idea.
Fun Fact to make the actors do the movies thy gave them a shit ton of drugs
The bigwigs definitely didn't read the comics if they thought they needed to entirely edit the movie "because it's too dark" when even the original running comic had a lot of dark moments in it. They're incompetent idiots.
If they were incompetent idiots then they wouldn't be running million dollar studios that employ thousands of people with each new project. Just because they don't read your comic book fighty boys doesn't mean they're bad at their jobs.
@@alexz.8302 They singlehandedly helped destroy the film. Don't know your definition for it, but their decisions that they forced to happen shows incompetence and idiocy. Simply because they're running these companies does not mean they possess the necessary skills to effectively employ to properly make a movie. Their skill sets are completely different from an actor, director, etc. They handle things like marketability and such.
@@blakewalker94 the director owned up to it. Studio jumped in when they realized his film wasn't a Fantastic Four film. Trying to save a burning ship.
@@alexz.8302 Doesn't change their incompetence in their decision making the movie even worse. My point still stands.
@@blakewalker94 your point doesn't stand. You call them incompetent but they literally came in to fix a dumpster fire. You're mad at the wrong people.
Fant4stic's Dr. Doom is more of a merge of Doom and Annihilus
The big problem is that it missed the whole concept
Fantastic 4 is a comic about a family 4 going around in high concept sci adventures.
Do you know what i refferance, the incredibles and doctor who (minus female), two very successful franchises, and i think if MCU can adapt it correctly.
And also their was no stan lee cameo in the movie
Don't blame the guy. Who'd want to cameo in this trash fire. And I just realized, there literally ISN'T a single family in the team this time around! Sue and Johnny aren't even family anymore. Either not blackwash Johnny for your woke-points, or go all out and make Sue black.
At least Tobias managed to get the hate crime charges dropped for those Sue Storm armbands.
There's a great documentary about the 1st movie. It shows that the movie was never intended to be seen by anyone and the directors and cast were totally unaware. There was some kind of loophole where the guy that bought the rights still made a load of money just by putting it into production
4:40 One of the reasons it failed was that like the early DCEU films directed by Zack Snyder it tried to be dark for dark's sake. Instead of having a dark tone that fit the story and characters like the Christopher Nolan Batman films where it fit the more realistic world he was going for, Snyder's stuff like Man of Steel and BVS were films Snyder thought would be successful just because they had a dark tone. They weren't. There was similar thinking in Fan4stic expect it was even worse and it was literally dark on top of tonally dark with almost every scene set in unlit rooms and the film having that cliche grey or black filter over it to make it look "depressing."
Your videos are so good I got to the point of binge watching most of them. Have you ever thought of doing a video on World Invasion: Battle of Los Angeles?
Fantastic Bore.
The one thing all of these movies have in common is how none of them seem to have any idea how to correctly portray Dr. Doom. He is the FF version of Magneto for the X-men, yet they constantly treat him like some caricature of what he is supposed to be. There will never be a great FF movie till they figure out how to make him the powerful character he is supposed to be.
Your take on this issue is so balanced, sensible and nuanced. Great watch.
Ffuuuu- I bet the original directors cut would've solid. I feel when he says he let Stan Lee down...
Now that is a Film Comic Explained.
Honestly, the troubled production of this movie is such a fascinating story, I bet it could work as a biographical movie.
I wanted to like this movie but even DC has seen better days
Everytime I hear FilmComics say FantFourstic, it just makes me chuckle.
14:58, the film has elements of Body Horror, as seen in the films of David Cronenberg.
"Made on a small budget of $1000000"
Me a poor person: That's not small, that's my retirement
The only thing I like about this film is Doom's design. That is it.
I am excited for what Marvel will do with it. They won't need to make a film to keep rights, only to tie into their ever-expanding MCU. Hopefully this time in quarantine allows writers extra time to create a compelling Fantastic Four film.
LOVING the puns
the biggest villan of f4 and xman its fox lol
I like your longer videos you should definitely consider doing more like this. Much love brother
Nah dude this movie is the best because it shows how people would truly feel if they got these powers. They wouldn't be happy they would hate their life and know they will be used and if they don't meet those needs they will be tested on or killed and I love the editing they did for doom and how he looks like a hellish creature they fell into a pit of green goopy magma
Nice to see some positivity for a change
That doesn't extinguish all the other problems in this movie , and the whole " but it's realistic " excuse can only get you so far .
20:39, it's one of the biggest plot holes in the entire film.
That suit actually looks really cool honestly.
In case no one knows this fantastic4 movie is built on the ultimate universe
THat explains why i hate it
Tbh I would like to see what the director had in mind for this film and whole take. I doubt it would be better than what we got but I'd still be interested.
I also enjoyed Rise of the Silver Surfer. But the modern FantFourstic is a slap in the face for Fantastic Four fans
Dr Doom is such an important, memorable, iconic, egomaniac character that no film adaption has done him any justice yet
i absolutely love your honesty and wise break downs
thank you for enlightening me
to more deeply understand what went wrong with this movie
I loved the idea of a r rated body horror fantastic 4, but that would never fly
If I ever hear the word Fan4Stic ever again, it’ll be too soon.
The ending also rips off the ending of Avengers Age of Ultron where Captain America says "Avengers" and he's about to say "Assemble" but it cuts to the end titles before he can. Reed is about to say "Fantastic Four" then it does the same. Except "Avengers Assemble" is actually paid off in Endgame when Steve says it.
Seriously, not that I know there’s a low budget musical, I want to see it
The fact victors suit melted onto his skin make me feel dizzy
What pisses me off about Fan4stick is that I can see the potential for a decent reboot. Sure it’s dark and gritty, which is inaccurate to the comics. But if the story had focused on the interplay between the characters and their dynamics, it could have at least been an interesting character study. Like exploring how Johnny and Susan formed their sibling relationship. Maybe it was difficult for them at first, since they weren’t biologically related. Or maybe show scenes of Johnny protecting his sister when they were younger or have them playfully tease each other in a quirky way that weirds other people out. Just something more interesting than the dialogue we got.
And I liked the angle of Ben and Reed’s friendship had at first. Maybe you could have had Ben becoming very jealous and feeling left out when the scientists pick Reed up for their project. Or maybe examine possible insecurities he may have had having a highly intelligent friend whereas he had average intelligence. You could even incorporate that into their powers scene, where those insecurities fuel him to become angry at his friend. Seemingly getting the short straw yet again in their escapades. And of course forgiving him as they team up to battle Doom.
And Dr Doom, you could have shown how his time on the other planet affected him. Maybe he was driven mad or maybe he felt abandoned by the group, which spurs him onto trying to get them back. All I really remember is he looked like Borat and came back a crash test dummy lol
I actually love the Jessica Alba two😂
I hope that now Disney owns Fox they can make a good Fantastic 4 movie.
I blue myself when he mentioned the musical
I just wanna see the 2005 Fantastic Four and Fox's X-Men in the MCU
Agreed. The 2005 movie was cheezy but it was a good Fantastic 4 movie. Just got to recast the human torch
3:59 as soon as he snapped i got an ad
Don't forget in FF Rise of the Silver Surfer General Hager was supposed to be Nick Fury but Marvel wouldn't let them use his name
dr doom is suppose to be imposing and threating like darth vader how ever 2014's "dr" doom just looks like a melted darth vader that glows green the plot is that of the ultimate's fantastic 4 till the military starts using them as agents
19:52 Doom "looking like a hybrid of a medical Droid from Star Wars and a blank-faced Twiki from Buck Rogers ..." NICE! Anyone else start hearing Twiki's "bee-da-bee-da-bee" just now?
Based on the final product alone, you'd have to assume the director intentionally sabotaged the product and the actors have never acted before
I have tried 4 times to watch this movie and have fallen asleep each time. When I woke up it was hard to realize it was the same movie! 😂
For a huge second, I thought filmento made this video, judging from the thumbnail alone
Say wat you will, but the90's doom actor is a really good hand actor.
The best there ever was!
Ooooh time for the annual Fanfourstic dragging 🍿
Niyat showed us that he cares about this movie.
Much more than the people who made it.
12:20 speaking of "sound and coherent". That voice audio difference Act 2 and 3 is so noticeable. 😂
22:26 and at the time it was also the darkest hour for the Fantastic 4 as well
When I first saw the movie I didn't realize that this plastic can is over doctor doom
