I am a Zoe owner and Last summer I used a Tesla open to Supercharger in Carmarthen. It worked fine except the chargers are within a car park where there are parking charges on top of the charge cost which was annoying because we only wanted to charge and not go around the local shops. Having said that they were so easy to use.

I used the Trentham Tesla charger on my MG4 last week. Due a diversion to drop my soon off in Milton Mowbray, we were down to 10%. After a visit to toilets and a cup of tea, we were on 93% on returning. Cost £20 (before 4pm).The first charger I tried was defunct. The site was the busiest I’ve ever seen it but it had 2/3 vacant chargers available. Some people were having difficulty removing the plug (solution; just depress the button on the charger plug).
Yes if the plug is stuck it’s because the car or charger are ready to pass high power electricity, depress the button or stop charging in your car should unlock. This can happen on any charger and is better than spilling fuel in the fossil days!
Standard range MG5s won't charge on a Tesla supercharger. Facelift models require a firmware update that is classed as an enhancement so is chargeable unless done by dealers as goodwill. The pre facelift long range is subject to a lot of discussion as MG issued a technical note that they need a new EVCC - even though some of the later ones have the same EVCC and base firmware as the facelift models and some MG4s
My recent talk with the commissioning engineers revealed that the issues are all known and being worked on. Unfortunately there is a long list of issues with a variety non-Tesla EVs.
Brian, the answer is you should be able to but play safe, try to charge when you don't need to, to find out. I would welcome hearing about your findings
Hi Dave, have you done a report on Chargers for Disabled that may be nearer the Services entrance? Personally, I would hind it difficult to hobble to Loo/Services if charger was too far away. Yes, I could park near the door first, use the facilities then move to the charger. I was just wondering
That’s such an important question also I have seen a lot of chargers for disabled being ICEd by disabled fossil drivers. This is the main friction I believe.
Walton Summit is opening some time soon, M6/M65 with 15 V4 open to all and Gretna Green about to go live with a large number of V3s and, I am told, V4s.
I have a 2023 MG ZS ev I tried to charge at Tesla open charger but it couldn’t recognise my car, took back to MG who had to do an update seems to be a problem with the this model, Changed at the Trafford centre no problem but it did take a £20 upfront payment my bill was only £8.82 it will take few days for this to adjust,I’m very happy with Tesla charging don’t feel like I’m being ripped off
Dave very interesting. Do you know if you can use a Tesla charger with another car and payment on new card if you have already got a Tesla Model 3 linked to app and payment with works credit card.
Just FYI Dave - stopped at the Abington Welcome Break services on the M74. Whilst I was charging at an AppleGreen in my Polestar2, Tesla have shutdown their chargers at Abington as they are installing a load (I counted at least 10 which are still having the core cabling installed) of new v4 chargers adding to the 6 they already have here which have been covered up for the moment which will make 16 available here at Abington, alongside the 8 AppleGreen 175kW Chargers too (and 2 50kW ‘slow’ GridServe chargers)
Thanks for the info. I was there a few months ago and they only had V3s waiting to be connected at that time. Great they are adding V4s. You forget the 4 Ionity up by the petrol station?
Hi Dave, observed a new Gridserve installation at Wolstanton retail park off the A 500 Stoke on Trent looks like six double bays going in. Waiting to see the price per kilowatt hour after commissioning hope it’s lower than the extortionate charge at present . Keep up the good informative work. 😊
Gridserve operates a flat price across the entire network - 79p/kWh. It's a shame because they are building great sites but the current price is inexcusable.
I tend to only charge at a Tesla charger when out (although mostly charge at home), I find using the app and the chargers to be excellent. I did however very recently use a MER charger (by chance), it was a shared 22Kw charger, but was only 35p and worked out as I was visiting a local attraction for a few hours, enough charge to get home with no inconvenience, not even ICE drivers can claim that!
Yes, I think the market is moving towards ultra-rapid Tesla and really slow and cheap type 2, leaving the 50kW in the middle of nowhere, wasn't that a song?
My BIG question is, if Tesla can get EV charging prices down, then how much excessive profits are all these other companies making from (non Tesla) EV drivers?!
Love Tesla Superchargers, I'm lucky in that I can use all the ones that are open to all as my charging port ison the same side as Teslas. Open to all is therefore a bit misleading as currretly quite a few are the V3 superchargers which because of the short cable few cars can use without blocking off bays to get the cable to reach.
Tesla chargers are excellent. I only wish my electric car could take advantage of the full rate of charge they can offer but the Kona tops out at 75KW per hour.
@@davetakesiton agreed, I delight when I hit 80kw in my MG4 but of course other models do better but that’s part of the reality, contentment is a powerful quality, on the flip side the delta for my car charging on slower chargers is less so choice comes mainly down to price.
