I have just finished The Last Witch of Scotland by Philip Paris and it is absolutely brilliant! The writing and storytelling are on point. It is about the story of Janet Horne and her daughter, that were accused of witchcraft in Dornoch. Apparently the last known official registry in history.
I love witches too. Malcolm Gaskill is one of the experts on the history of witchcraft but not the only one. Have you read Ronald Hutton? He writes mostly about paganism but has a book called The Witch. Having said that Gaskill's books are good. I have a big collection of books on witchcraft, my ancestry includes witches mostly in Scotland.
The Witches of Vardo is amazing, wonderfully and terrifyingly atmospheric.
The Ruin of all Witches sounds great. They all do but I'm finding myself wanting non fiction more atm so I think that one is going to have to trump the other two on my tbr

I have never heard of these books. I think The Witches of Vardo would be my Jam. I loved the Mercies and it seems to have the same vibe.

The Ruin of All Witches sounds fascinating 🧐 I read Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici earlier this year and thought it was fantastic nonfiction exploring the connections between the development of capitalism and assertions of witchcraft in Europe and the “new world”. Very good and I would highly recommend it 😊

I live in Leominster Mass now and they pronounce it like lemon-ster. lol
Seems like witch lit has developed enough to be sorted into 2 piles, one in which magic is real in some way, the other more historically based in which the darkness is no less frightening for being rooted in sexism, classism, racism, xenophobia, trauma etc. Reminds me of how a lot of horror films’ central mystery is resolved in either “demons/ghosts were real all along!” or “it was trauma all along!” As the genre develops I’m curious to see authors maybe start to play with that boundary. I’d love to read, e.g., a story in pre-Tudor England when it was the *belief* in witches that was criminalized rather than the “practice of witchcraft” itself, where the initial accusation is what endows the protagonist with witchy powers.
