Ok Bernadette, I’m 72 and this is the first time I’ve tried to play an instrument. It’s on my Bucket List. I’ve decided to take this challenge because I am taking lessons(6 so far) and not learning the basics and don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere. He’s a nice young fella but maybe he’s intimidated by me(age wise). Anyway, saw a number of your videos and decided to quit the lessons and stick with you. 🎼

Hi JIm....I’m 76 and have also decided this was on my bucket list. I agree 100% because sometimes when you get older learning is more repetition than anything and Bernadettes excellent videos allows you to work at your own pace. @@judithberg379 Hi, Judith! I turned 62 also and have been wanting to play for a year and a half. Did a lot of research, bought my Nova U and am loving it! Just started the 6 one-finger chords--so excited to "make" music! Not sure how good I'll ever be, but I'm having fun, so that's a good thing! Ms. B is the best! So important to keep finding things to do that excite and challenge us as we get older.

This has to be one of the best ukulele lessons and music course for beginners I've ever come across. This reminds me of the music fundamentals classes I took in my performing Arts high school. It's so well put together.
The reason why the professional musicians are able to do what they do, is because they've mastered these basic fundamentals. At some point, every musician we admire including guys like; Green Day, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix, the Foo Fighters, Prince, 3 Days Grace, the 21 Pilots, they all had to sit down and learn these basic music fundamentals.
It's not sexy, but that's what made them great at what they do. It is said that Michael Jackson spent eight hours a day mastering his craft. It's the same with the ukulele, it's such a wonderful instrument, but in order to take full advantage of its power, you have to learn the basics and put in the time to learn the basics.
We never hear the early years of when guys like Blink 182, Lenny. Kravitz, The White Stripes, System of a Down, My Chemical Romance or when the Jackson 5 and the Beetles first tried to play a musical instrument. Because, they all sucked that very first day, that first week and that first year 😊

As a former piano student who learned to read music and former alto sax player who mimicked what I heard more so than read the music, I can say that learning these foundation skills, such as the scale and notes will make all the difference by Day 30 and beyond. While it may take a bit more work upfront, this exercise is a great learning tool for we uke newbies and those who appreciate music theory. Learning songs by rote has its place but is a short-cut that will eventually lead back to this lesson. So why not learn the basics and understand how each note contributes to the sound/musicality from the start? Great job, teacher! Thanks for the printouts, too!
On another note, I'm using a Cordoba 15cm and find that my forearm quickly becomes sore. Assuming that my right hand rests comfortably in that zone about 2" north of the sound hole, I wish the body was 3in longer so that my forearm doesn't extend so far off the body. Is the soreness normal at first? Should I lower my forearm or add a pad where my forearm rests on the body? I had uke imprints all over my inner forearm after this practicing.

This playlist is fantastic and so thorough! I used to play piano and violin so I have a music background but I’m glad that music theory is incorporated into the lessons. I didn’t want to pay for in person lessons as I find them hard to commit to so having something like this that is fun but thorough is perfect for me. I think at least the basics of music theory is important and one of the first things I wanted to know when picking up the ukulele is where exactly each note is. I think it’s easier if you want to play from sheet music later.

I’m on day 3 and struggling a bit on the chromatic scale. I think I’ll take tomorrow off to learn it and then move to day 4. Are you still learning? Have you made it through this first 30 days uke challenge?

Wow!!! That was challenging “Coach”!!! You’re right! This is a foundational Lesson - and I HOPE no one gets discouraged by it. (Totally get it on the piano......Want to master this “chromatic scale” on the UKE. Sooooo EXCITED to learn it. Will have to watch this lesson again....and maybe again. Love it!!!!!!! Thanks so much Bernadette (“Coach”)😀😘
    THIS LESSON ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Appreciate it!

      Geralyn Palacol hi Geralyn!!! 👋🏼
My husband is an absolute beginner and I saw him go through this video and it was challenging for him too. Thankfully he was really engaged and motivated to learn this lesson. Hope you learn this scale soon! Remember to practice saying the names of the notes to yourself as you play them!

Oh he is.....really?! How sweet!❤️. That would be cool to see you two do a duet in Spanish. (That would be Awesome to learn a Beautiful Spanish 🎶Song🎶 on the Ukulele😍😂😂😂). You’re right....I.e. saying the names of the notes while practicing the “chromatic scale” is very helpful. Going backwards (with the flats is very challenging - but I’ll keep practicing till I get it.😀THANKS “Coach”!!!!!!!!

Now that I'm learning how to play the piano, this video makes so much more sense to me. Also, for anyone trying to learn how to play the piano, RUclips PianoVideoLessons, it's the best channel so far to learn how to play. It wasnt until I found Bernadette and Cynthia Lin on RUclips till Ukulele became easy to learn. Similarly, PianoVideoLessons creates instructional videos that are reasonable and achievable for people like myself that have zero experience in music.

I took a ukulele class during my last semester of college and made some decent progress but lately I've been feeling stuck and unable to progress. I'm starting this challenge to see what I didn't learn in that class and how I can improve. I've seen some of your other videos and they're very useful and straightforward, so I am very excited to embark on this challenge! Chromatic scale is something we didn't cover in the class so I'm already learning new things!
