I lived in Okinawa from 1960-1970 and again in 1975-1978. I graduated from Kubasaki High. I so miss Okinawan Yakisoba and everything else Okinawan food. I wish fervently someone from Oki would come here and start a restaurant. I know they would clean house and make huge bank! I used to go to Sunabe to Kina's Kitchen. She had been the head cook at the FBIS Club inside Gate I on Kadena then went out on her own. She made the best spring rolls ever!!! And the Sukiyaki was to die for. Okinawa is where I call home. It had the most impact in my life and my heart will forever be in Okinawa with her people. I love them, kind and gentle people who revered children and their elders. I'm old school, it will always be Okinawa to me, never Okinawa, Japan.
Ate there so many times - "you fly I buy" and off someone went on a bicycle to fetch all the yakisoba and corndogs they could carry. 3AABn with Alpha for three UDPs and one with Echoe. Visited last week and the Quick Stop is no longer open. However, ate at the Oceans and had drink at Snack Pony and Pink Diamond to relive my younger days. Texas was open but I didn't stop in.
Wow been looking for the taste of shrimp yakisoba since leaving Okinawa in 1989 with 2/5 Marines. We ate this almost 4 times a week since we were drunk every night looking for food since we knew we would be in the field or PT running the next morning. I have found a place here in Texas where I get some every other Friday but it does not taste like the one from Okinawa. YES, me and my fellow Marines ate ours with cheese and still do today.
Wow. . I was with 9th marines at Schwab in 78. I would bring that same kind of container with rubber band of the best yakisoba to the barracks after a night of boozing. .
I was at Schwab in 69 after 1/9 got pulled out. There was a place called Koko's sandwich shop that we ate all the time. Got a picture but don't see a way to post it.
OMG!! We hit that shack every weekend. The taco and rice also fried chicken leg was awesome, eversince then, even in the states I have never had larger chicken thigh/leg. Not once did we ever saw a live chicken on that rock, go figure. Mr. Shijo looks just about the same last time I saw him in '92. But the best bento box I ever ate was just down the street in this part house/restaurant, the owner and his wife were the nicest people. I always remember how warm the rice was after a bite of my first ever tempura shrimp, and octopus with wasabi.
Dude that guy was there in 86, still looks the same. He's like immortal or something. Best soba, best TRC best burgers too. Something about that rice fed beef that you just can't find stateside. I miss it all.
Brings back a lot of memories. Ate there all the time. Still remember the taste of the drink that I would always get outta the drink machine there. Orange drink, had a bee on it I believe. Schwab 93-94. Hansen 95-96. The taco rice at the USO on Schwab was killer too. Lol, matter of fact my barracks was between the USO and the quick stop! Had it made, those were the days.
was that the name? lol can't remember, was on Oki in '92 and all i remember is ol' honcho cooking up a storm. He knew his frequent customers specific order when they came, and man i was one of em. Catch that USO bus to Hansen late night, grab some soba, and jump back on the last one back to Schwab, walk all the way back to the barracks, and its still warm!! Semper Fi, memories .....
What was the name of the seasoning? Was stationed at Schwab in late 2001/early 2002 with 3/2K and I lived off this! I have been craving it ever since we left and want to make it at home.
I was stationed at Camp Swab and ate at the quick stop alot. The USO had an older lady thta cooked it better. Gate 1 outside Camp Hansen was awesome too.
Cheese?! What gringo added THAT!? LOL In 1981 we only added some mustard, MAYBE! and hot sauce. Just outside gate 1 of Hansen first place on the left. mmmmm.
yo the best yakisoba spot was outside Camp Hansen in Kenville when i was there '92. Hell i was 2311/Ammo Co/Camp Schwab and still traveled there on the USO bus just for that yakisoba! Don't know if its still there, or if honcho is still alive, but man he would have had 4 orders done by the time this guy made one order, lmfao. Those old cats man, knew their stuff, don't know if they pass down their knowledge or what but i miss does days man. OOhhh Fuqin Raahh!!
My friend michiko miyagi lived near this place. Loved the food. Haven't seen her in almost 30 years. Can anyone help me find her? Her house number is 252-4. Go straight to the left of quick stop all the way until the end, take a right and she is the 4th house down on the left. Pretty white roof/peach accents, plants everywhere outside.Miss u my friend(1991)-Kitty
How old do you think Michiko would be today? I have found 2 people with this name. One passed away here in California and one Facebook profile that hasn't seen any postings since 21013.
@@pitbull6527 she would be about 65-70. She is very traditional and would never travel to the states. She is bilingual and very friendly. She is right down the road from the Quikstop. She has one son who would be about 35. She taught me so much. I will never forget her. Her husband’s name was Masahiko.Honestly, I can’t see her being active on Facebook.
i was stationed at schwab 1980 3rd bn 4th marines kilo co. i am looking for the original recipe for mojo the papason wood make it and put it in a large saki bottke. tyfoon time we would send someone down there grab a bottle and bring it back to our bbarrakes is no.1 tacos still there well be waiting
Cheese was an American thing they added later, I was at Camp Schwab in 1979 with the 4th Marines and the Okinawans never puit cheese on Yakisoba. Yeech! It sucks when people add other cultures to any native food.
You mean like taco rice? That is how new foods become invented, when other cultures add to "native" food. Don't fall for the "cultural appropriation" bullshit.
loved Henoko....was there 1966, stationed at Camp Schwab , then to Nam..

O man...I haven't been there since 1992. My love for Yakisoba started there. And I have yet to taste it like that anywhere else.
Wow. . I was with 9th marines at Schwab in 78. I would bring that same kind of container with rubber band of the best yakisoba to the barracks after a night of boozing. .
Wow, I used to eat yakisoba almost daily while stationed at Schwab 1986-1987. THE BEST!

Amazing! I was there once or twice a week from 92-94
In my tours of duty on The Rock, I must have eaten Yakisoba hundreds of times. But never with cheese! I guess you learn something new every day.
I was stationed at camp shields in 1986. I loved the yakisoba at the crows nest. It looked different than what you just made.
He is going to " WOK " you though it... lol thank you for sharing this..
I used to live down the street by the Fuji steam bath!!
Man I miss the Yak Shack so much.
What was the name of the seasoning? Was stationed at Schwab in late 2001/early 2002 with 3/2K and I lived off this! I have been craving it ever since we left and want to make it at home.

A fifth of saki, a fifth of sloe gin, a quart of orange juice, and a bottle of 7 up.
Cheese was an American thing they added later, I was at Camp Schwab in 1979 with the 4th Marines and the Okinawans never puit cheese on Yakisoba. Yeech! It sucks when people add other cultures to any native food.
