- Jean Renoir's movie 'The River' filmed in & around Bengal in the 1950s. This dance is in Bharatanatyam style by Srimati Radha, the niece of the world reknowned Smt Rukmini Devi Arundale, founder of the Kalakshetra Academy in Madras now Chennai.

Wow, really nice to see how they danced back then. I wonder if there exists any video of Rukmini Devi dancing.

B's grandson's dance was a revelation to me since after I started enjoying kalakshetra style more. B's dance had its pro (abhinaya) and cons (adavus). His nattuvanar told me that for adavus no one can beat kalakshetra. Crores and Crores of thanks to RDA.

Though art is subjective, I am quite dismayed about how people feel that this dance has clarity. Her tei-di-di-tei is atrocious. Though styles may differ, one CANNOT look past the lack of neatness in this dance. And i personally take on the challenge, not through words but through dance to prove that Bala's style stood unique. With over a 120 adavus, and 500 theermanams of great complexity no one can argue with the greatness of Bala's dance. Tripmonk0, I know that you are not a great fan of this style, but I think it is time we meet one and one for you to understand the complexity of this traditional art. aniruddha knight Namaste & Vanakaam from the UK. I agree about this dance not being clear. My training was very clear & sharp when it was adavus & softer & more 'natural' when doing any kind of abhinaya. I've seen many styles & many dancers WITHIN these styles & seen the differences in some trained by the very same gurus. Would love to meet you sometime too.
I completely agree with you. I am a dancer myself. It seems as though they just picked up some dancer and asked her to perform. It isn't subjective, even though I think you said it to be nice. Regardless of the style of dancing, every dancer needs neatness, sharpness, and grace. I think it's also because the movie is by a British person, so their barrier is lower than someone who knows the art form well.

The great Rugmini Devi is remembered as her passion towards the art helped revive and flourish the art form as we see today - well defined and beautiful, aesthetically presentable with technical base. If u see the other schools - Sarabhais, Anirudha et al.. the art has not flourished as such .
I disagree with this statement. While Athai did create a great institution to propagate the art, there are many other great dance schools such as the vazvahoor and tanjore bani eg stalwarts like srimathi vyjanthimala, guru ramaiah pillai who have given back and have kept on the great traditions of the art. Before coming forward with such shallow statements please research and learn the history of natya and it's evolution.

@@humann6739 by indicating that other schools or forms fall short of Athai's institution you are discrediting the hard work of many others who helped this art form survive in its current form. Athai did a great service to us and so did the other gurus and artists such as guru mrinalini and guru Ramaiah. Your statement is false and incorrect.
If you check out those clips I uploaded of a Kalakshetra prog from about 1984, you can see a very brief shot of her teaching, in B/W. I asked at the actual school about Rukmini-ji dancing videos & Krishnaveni told me that the BBC has some.

It indeed is a young DPP! It's one of his brothers in mrudangam.
It's actually all included in the dancing. When one learns any Indian dance style there are these 'bols' to learn as each dance unit uses them.

Is there any footage of RDA's guru, Sri Minakshisundaram Pillai at all.

Exactly right again. We have to remember what state Dasi Attam was in when RDA saw it. It was due to her & E Krishna Iyer's main efforts that revived a dying art form. I saw Balasaraswati's grandson, Anniruddha Knight, dance at Kalakshetra a few years ago & was not happy at all. It was very sloppy in precision. Smt Shantha Dhananjayan told me this is how B used to dance, certainly regarding adavus.

I'm inclined to agree but we must remember that Kalakshetra hadn't been around very long when this film was made. Radha was, I believe, Rukmini-ji's earliest if not first student, her niece anyway. The standards had become more strict as the years went by until recently when I've seen some pupils supposedly from Kalakshetra doing things that my teacher & her guru would NEVER allow.

Art is subjective, just like beauty. Both beauty and art CANNOT have absolute standards. It is in the eye of the beholder. My guru graduated from Kalakshetra with a post grad and was a close associate of Rukmini Devi. I was brought up with the ethos that there is a set way of doing things. As I am immersing myself in this art form after having learned it for over two decades, I have come to realize how much we narrow and limit ourselves when we call only one art form as 'good'. Who decides what is good? What gives them to decide it?

I think the present generation has lot of misconceptions about RDA. Sadly there is no one to clear the myths about her "sanitising" efforts. I have seen people who love to hate RDA. History is sadly not an important study in India when compared to politics. She had a different viewpoint on sringara which is being taken totally out of context and a virtual war is happening when some one talks about her works and style.
She looks very similar to her aunt!!

Rukmini Devi-ji had seen how Dasiattam had 'descended' into vulgarity because the main emphasis was human & not divine. Pleasing humans & NOT God!
I don't feel she would throw out eroticism totally despite this. Although she did emphasise BHAKTHI instead.

I would suggest you to read Leela Samson's recent book on RDA titled "Rukmini Devi: A Life". She has put to rest the "rift" of RDA and Balasaraswati. Moreover, I felt that all those who want to clear their myths or take a stand to read this book. Not because it was written by Leela Samson, but it has nothing but facts and one would understand the society of her times. Any person who wanted to save the art form would have done exactly what RDA had done. No one understands this anymore.

The truth is that this dance is kind of funny to me. I remember when I was a child me and my friends danced very similar to this woman but we did it as a game to make laugh of ourselves. Also, I wonder why this other character is blue colored...
