Once I got past the cousins part, I enjoyed the romance. I did not want Rose to end up with Charlie but I felt so sorry for him.

This has always been one of my favorite books, and I've reread it many times. Love to hear your thoughts, and I love how you are not afraid to ask the tough questions! Excellent video!

I admire people that can discuss heavy topics in a light/gentle way for children. Fred Rogers was always praised for that! I know I miss him.

I literally just re-read Little Women for the first time in years, and your videos have helped persuade me I need to check out some of the sequels. Especially this one -- it's always an achievement to touch on such serious topics in a way that's accessible to and appropriate for children. Your comments on the death scene make me think of the medieval spiritual discipline of "memento mori," like the idea of keeping a skull on one's desk as a reminder of one's mortality and of eternity. Our own culture has such a warped relation to death -- on one hand putting it out of sight as much as possible for those who are strong and able and outwardly healthy (a cosmetics store near me is called "The Anti-Aging Shop"!), on the other hand having no problems administering death itself to those whose lives don't fit these categories. Anyway, it sounds like Alcott crafted a narrative here with elements people from many ages and walks of life can relate to, so I'm excited to eventually make my way to it!

That's great that you reread Little Women! I'm glad I've convinced you to read more of LMA's work. 😆 It really was a great achievement the way she discussed death and other darker issues. It's so important that we do talk about those things sometimes.

Excellent review. You really delved into the various story lines and what they reflect. I agree with all your analysis! The interesting thing that just occurred to me is that the suffragette movement was very much tied to the teetotaler movement that lead to Prohibition (which pretty much coincided with women's right to vote). So I wonder if in Alcott's mind these two were connected. Anyway, I think you really got this novel in a deeper way than I did and I appreciate all your thoughts on it!

Thanks so much! Yes, Prohibition and Suffrage went hand in hand since drunkenness brought on so much domestic violence. It really is a fascinating topic. Have you ever read any Nellie McLung? Her autobiographies are fascinating! She was a Canadian suffragist. (In Canada they were called suffragists, not suffragettes). I love that whole topic!

Very good review. I especially like how you associate the events, the characters and the society with the time period

I was so sad about Charlie! I think I enjoyed this one the most since Little Women, even if it was a little syrupy sweet. I liked that it dealt with the alcoholism plot the way it did, even though it didn’t end positively for Charlie. I honestly didn’t even pick up on the fact that Phoebe had to prove her worth and how wrong that was! I feel like a horrible person now. Lol. I wonder if that had something to do with Louisa’s upbringing with her father’s views on religion. He was very focused on works and not relationship.

So true! It was all about earning your place and earning your salvation. I'm glad you enjoyed this one in spite of the syrupy sweetness 😆
