Without your videos and insight I may have nevered finished a job my boss was in way over his head.
I've learned more about painting in the last 2 weeks watching these videos and putting it to work on the job then I have learned in the last 8 months. I took this painting job as a short term, quick cash job with no intentions of sticking with it, but now I have very much considered eventually starting my own painting business. Nah. 8 days with the right youtube vids and you're ready to start taking on customers . Cant cut a straight line yet ? Frog tape by the cases. I made $35000 this year and only spent $23000 on tape! Not bad eh? LOL. Question for all the painters. Who's the most famous name have you worked for????? (Big money jobs ) Mondo just make sure you are fare to the customer and have proper insurance and try not to use peoples homes that they've paid $100s of 1000's for as they are trusting you will make their home better with quality work. Go work for a high end painter and get a different perspective of quality workmanship because in the end it to will help in what you think of as quality .

its faster to tape and let it rip. just remember to score your trim paint before you pull tape,if you're painting trim and need two coats and dont want to pull tape right away :) love your vids Chris! thanks as always.
Important tip: dust the top of the base and casings with a old brush to get the dust off so the tape will stick easier on repaints

Contracting to interior paint a rental I was told the Vinyl flooring throughout the house would be replaced and I wouldn't need to cover floor. With over spray throughout I was informed the owners didn't have funds for new flooring! I asked at Dunn-Edwards here in Tucson, Az. ( Interior Latex paint was only two days old) They said just scrub it off with water! Worked like magic, It took just a couple of hours to clean a 3 bedroom house ! Thanks Dunn-Edwards ..:)

Some one earlier asked should you wash/wipe down walls b4. I suggest looking over and some feeling the wall for grease if a shine is noticed. Cobwebs, fill thumb tack many holes if noticed. Prep is essential. I once in days past, painted over some greasy stuff on about a 4x4 section of the wall. Hurrying. Not good. Paint freaked out. When that happens you got to paint problem with extreme bonding primer. Then repaint two coats feathering it in as to not leave/see a flash sheen. When painting inside a garage, Use Extreme prime first around the big garages doors for two feet in. This will keep paint from pealing from the moisture which comes in. As we all know, nobody has become a millionaire by marketing garage doors which shut air tight. Go figure. Primer-n interior walls is essential in lake front properties and any home where large bodies of water are of close proximity; because of the moisture in the air which can penetrate through paint to paper covering the ginseng. The white stuff in the sheet rock. Like a sponge magnet it pulls water molecules out of the air to it . Too much information sorry. Good video Chris! I've been in a number of high end homes that were "professionally" painted where no tape was used because they free-handed. I always use tape and never have any call-backs and get a ton of repeat business. Hope you guys have a great 2019!!

I use blue on all the painted trim, using white caulk and a damp rag to wipe. .and clear caulk on any stained trim or cabinetry even tile work. .and wipe it really good so it's not thick, then if needed can be left over night.
3m blue tape has two sides. Its offset so the cardboard sticks out on one side. Thats the side you run on the wall and puts your tape on the wood with a perfect line no matter how crooked the wall is.

Chris I have a helpful tip for people who have a difficult time laying the tape down straight and along the proper line. Once you have the end of the tape stuck down, unroll maybe 20 inches or so (there is no hard and fast rule here, just unroll what you can handle laying down, if 15 inches works, then do that), then push the side of the roll of tape flat against the wall and, with the outer circumference of the tape roll touching the trim, turn the roll of tape so that the point where the unrolled tape joins to the roll is touching the trim you are masking. This places the tape exactly on the plane that it should be on. Then smooth the tape down and repeat the process. This method does not pull the tape very tight, so care must be used when smoothing the tape down or it will bunch up. If the wall you are working on is perfectly straight then you can lay down more tape at a time, but as we know nothing is ever straight in construction. This trick may or may not work on textured walls, (experiment with that, we generally have all smooth walls up here in Canada) but works like a charm on smooth walls and lays the tape down laser-beam straight without any kinks from mishandling the tape. A good taper will probably lay down tape somewhat faster than this method, but it enables paint company trainees or DIYers to lay a perfect line.
This method is not to be used if the edge of the tape is going to be caulked, as the tape needs to be spaced away from the wall a bit, but that is a professional's trick anyways.

Chris,Your the only one I have seen use caulk to prevent bleeding in the tape, It works well when you are doing vertical lines in walls also. I put the caulking on my finger and very lightly cover the edge then pull back toward the tape with a slightly damp rag; this creates razor sharp lines.
Hey, bratha, I started painting relatively well by watching your vids and really appreciate all your detail explanation on painting interior and exterior. My painting has evolved from just painting to artisan work. One thing I would like for you to explain (and maybe you have in a video I haven't seen yet) is ladder set up. Safety and area set up. Although I have figured it out from the homes I have painted over time, It would save time and effort for those that think they know. To say the truth, it wasn't pretty trying to figure it out. Thanks for your effort for putting out the info to make us better in what we do.

Do you have a video on how to mask, caulk, and then do a cut line over it from start to finish on any kind of trim. If not, I would love to see it! Your videos are helping me so much! After I watch some more videos I will head over to your store to get some supplies to actually paint my bedroom!
I would take down the blind take off the cover plates, tape off the base,if it's drywall I would sand the walls with a sanding pad on my extension pole ,any good painter doesn't have to tape off door jambs

I love masking. My only tip (besides my hat to this Master Painter) is to cut your masking tape on sharp 45 degree angles with a sharp blade, this allows you to put the pointy end into tight corners when you have 90 degree transitions from casing to baseboards. This creates a nice sharp corner finish for you paint brush :)

Spiny, you can get a similar result by folding the tape back on itself if you are trying to push production
I use my 5in1 in the corners to rip the tape, so I can score my tape while I move and then have a clean sharp line to start with.
I probably dont paint enough to get good at it but thanks for your response.

Hi, I'm Tim Last from Ontario, Canada. I've been working as a general contractor for a few years and I've worked alot of different trades and I really want to be a painter. I've worked for a painter before for a summer and I really like it . I did most of the painter for my bros GC company, I like painting because it's Hard work but I life to be out of the sun. It's also because it makes me feel great when I can change the look of a house and bring it back to life again. Most of all,I love painting because it puts asmile on the customers face.
I went out and bought all my own tool's, airless paint sprayer and all cordless tools and rolled, extension poles, air and nail guns for trim work or crown molding. I'm trying to get into new homes, I have a question? In new homes do they just prime the ceilings and walls all one colour? Or dose the home owner contact that work later.

Hey Chris I know this is an old video but please post some videos with close up shots on how to prepare walls and trim for paint! Things like what spackle or drywall compounds to use, repairing, instead of replacing, damaged trim. Repairing wood casings, baseboards and other trim as well as what products to use. Also fixing any built up dried paint. I’ve seen your videos on fixing paint runs with bondo.

Great instruction Chris! Why didnt you bring the tape/paper on the molding upwards to just a smidge below the frog tape to fully protect it? Ive been watching your video's for over a year now, Im starting to paint the entire inside of my 3400 sq foot house next week, everything by spray and roll. Wish me luck, couldn't have done it without you!
I just cut in and don't tape for interior stuff. However everyone is different and you have mastered the taping process.....👍
cwrowe sometimes it's tapped to protect from roller splatter.
I'm do the same thing cwrowe, hardly ever tape and when I roll, I roll slow as to not get splatter everywhere. Of course, now that I'm getting older, slower is also better :)

I don't tape as much as he does, but it is infinitely faster to tape the baseboard instead of cutting the wall color onto the trim.

Frog tape has a chemical added to the adhesive at the edge of the tape that's hydrophobic (water hating) so that the tape physically pushes the paint away from the edge of the tape so it forms a clean line at the edge of the tape where the chemical ends. Blue tape doesn't have this feature.

yes frog gives much better results over blue.. I tried them side by side on a job and frog gives better results but if your margins are tight it is tempting to cheap out. Like any business though, your name and reputation is in the details and frog produces fine lines better than blue

I thought it had a coating that absorbed water on the outside surface? Put a drop of water on the side of a roll of tape.
@@ichoozjc - I put a wet brush on the side of a roll of Frog Tape and a bunch of clear goo oozed out. This stuff reacts with the water in latex paint to seal the edge. Great product, even though it's increased in price about $2 in the past 6 months!
I use the roll of tape itself instead of my finger on top of the tape when I need a really crisp line. Just put the tape roll on top of your tape edge and drag it across the top of your tape for a very uniform adhesion.

Chris, I was wondering if you have any tips on masking a popcorn ceiling to spray crown molding?
Many many years ago I discovered that by using any kind of tape on fresh dried paint for masking , once I removed the the tape it would always tare the paint off....So what I discovered was that by running some saliva on the sticky part of the tape with my thumb and forefinger the tape would not peel any paint, always worked......Canada
I like to wipe all trim with a damp sponge and bucket of water first, then tape trim. When you get to the corner press tape down with a putty knife or paint scrapper, and use a sharp 9mm utility blade to cut tape. it works great especially masking windows too. I so not paint without a 9mm utility knife interior or exterior. i can basically prep a whole house with a 9mm, it's one of my favorite prep tools, and it's a must have to do any high end work. it filets paint off of exterior window sills, etc. you can cut the bad paint Fe good caulk to keep the food caulk nice, and filter the old paint right off down to bare wood. I also like to have a nice 3" razorblade scrapper to knock terds off of walls, scrap old paint, etc. you can scrape paint off of metal down to bare metal with a 3" razor blade scrapper, and I don't even use the blade, I keep it protected, and use the other side, the thick dull side of the blade. it's also good to have for scrapping paint off of windows.
I value you option most. Please tell me the complete process for painting a wrought iron fencing. We had it galvanizes and it needs some sanding where the drips if galvanized happened. We have S W. Emerald paint for finish coat.

Chris, again...your videos are fantastic. Masking question...I've noticed sometimes you leave a small gap (maybe 1/16") between the tape and the wall/window glass, while other times you tape right up against them with no gap. Is there a rule of thumb on how to decide?
also we had a 3m rep at the shop a month or so ago and they gave us some samples of a new tape they are releasing soon, its a yellow tape that supposedly sticks to fresh paint (the untapable surfactant coated new paint) we tried it and personally it did not work well for us but its worth checking out

I had to tape the wall where it meets the top of the door trim with yellow frog tape. Removed it after I painted the trim and it peeled off a piece from the wall, not the trim.
I like to put some paper over the closet door casing as well. And I remove blinds.

The customer is not to kind on removing furniture from the job site. Any suggestions.. on how I could convince her to remove some of the expensive furnishings. On top of it she has real bamboo flooring. I'm no stranger to high end job's. Its just cumbersome to be working around all these thing's. Errrr!
Thanks for the great videos! I have a question for our current project. We are finishing our basement and have walls painted, and just installed primed trim. Would the best order be to caulk all of the trim edges and spray trim, then after trim has dried tape line using caulk to cut in wall color? Also wondering if it is okay to spray the trim without masking the wall right above it (having some over spray on the wall right above) or do we need to mask the trim line before painting the trim as well? Thanks for your help!

I spray the carpet with same color as the wall, that way, no one notices the paint drips from the wall and you dont need a tarp as an added bonus.
Just a tip if anyone's interested: When taping baseboard it is much easier/ faster to learn how to put the tape down without tearing it in pieces with your hand. Just unroll the tape onto the baseboard across an entire side and when you reach a corner put the tape into the corner where it goes on the wall a little and use a 5 in 1 tool to hold the paper in the corner as you pull the excess tape off.

I have a very hard time keeping the tape straight when I press down with my fingers. I tends to move. Other than being clumsy is there a technique for push the tape against the wood trim? Also I noticed in other videos that you used a putty knife or 5 in 1 to seal the edge of the tape. You dont have to do that with Frog Tape?

Mr Idaho, I am a second generation painter. Trained by old time, master painters. I almost fainted when I see that you make sure to protect everything. I am in New Jersey, and I am lambasted for my professional, same as you techniques. A lot of fly by night, save a dollar at all cost guys here. Million dollar homes, and they still treat it as a shed they are painting. Many contractors actually say I am dead wrong using many of the techniques that you deploy. Especially bankrolling the cuts with a hand roller. I enjoy your videos, but when I show these so called pros, who own companies, they simply add you to the list of "overkill" painters. I'm a brand new painter subcontracting to a friends company and I too I'm meticulous to my quality, detail & service, very much so above and beyond.
My last job came to a handful of arguments over time, money and craftsmanship.
It came to the point were I had to tell him, IF i take another job for the company your not aloud to pick up a brush or roller.
Stay sharp painter & dont change your flow for anything.
you forgot to talk about masking off a ceiling fan. when I have painted in a room with a ceiling fan, I drop the bell that dresses to the ceiling and wrap a piece of visqueen around the shaft and tape it closed. it should look like an inverted parasol with an inverted cannopy
Question you guys always do your trim first right? So at what point do you retape the base boards for caulking and edging? Also where should one tape on the baseboards? Meaning some people tape close to the wall and base board and some people actually tape the top of the baseboard. I prefer the first method.

Thank you. It was a silly question, just hoping for some masking hack that didn't force me to cut the tape into little pieces to follow the curve to create a nice paint line. When I try to use long strips of masking tape they wrinkle as I go around the curve. No reply necessary, I appreciate your time.

Take the blind down. It should be removed with plug/switch plates, vents and other hardware. I don't like leaving any trace of older color. Also masking paper isn't needed if you use the wider frog tape and drop cloth. Otherwise good tips.

Do you always tape around trim when painting walls? I would think you paint it free hand like you cut in the ceiling?
Painting is one activity that I avoid whenever possible. But I have great respect for painters, because they do a difficult job. In this case, the painter is showing people how to choose the correct kind of masking tape. So I was wondering if it would be possible to make an adjustable masking tape dispenser. A plastic frame would hold three identical rolls of one-inch wide masking tape, next to each other. So you could pull on one roll of masking tape, to get a one-inch wide piece. Or you could pull on the end of two rolls of masking tape which would get joined together by a little roller. That would give you a two-inch wide piece of masking tape. (almost). Or you could pull on all three rolls to get a three-inch wide piece of masking tape. (almost). That would give a painter more options.

when your spraying kitchen cupboards you like to take the doors off and hang it on coat hangers and Ladders in the.uk you just can't not screw into people's doors the doors are on hinges that is your hanger all you need to do is cut in

This keeps the splatters from off the baseboard on top of the baseboard when you role the wall out so you don't have to go back and touch the baseboard up some people call it the mopboard to

I have a side job that has a hallway with 5 door frames and a stair case that leads into the basement. Ill have to spend at least 2 hours taping.

No, brother - a "professional" painter removes the blinds to paint the area behind them. That's an incomplete job and makes me wonder about any other areas you purposefully ignore.
Also, always mask the tops of the baseboards, FIRST, then go back and tape door casings - ensuring that the tape at bottom of the door trim (where it meets the baseboard) overlaps the tape on the baseboard. The method you demonstrated (going right to the baseboard from off of the door trim) doesn't secure that joint and almost always allows paint bleed.
In my experience, use of 1.5 inch masking (or Frog) tape along the baseboards offers a sufficient canopy to protect from paint drips (the flooring should be protected by the drops and should butt up against the baseboard).
Although I comprehend the added protection of laying down paper/tape along the edge (drops/runners sometimes move away from an area just from walking over it) I feel the implementation of paper and (highly impractical) 1-inch tape can be a waste of time and material (as is applying paper over window sills). Clearly you're setting up the room based on speed production as opposed to quality. Save those materials for when they're really needed and slow your process of application of paint, which will produce far less opportunities for paint drips. Speed isn't nearly as critical as is quality.
