As an Aussie who had a small part to play in track prep in the 1990’s it has been great seeing Bruce recently and now hearing Phil telling some stories from home, although they were very much sanitised for the podcast. Clay I’m sure you heard a few more that could definitely not be told on tape.
Phil’s stories of his dad Jim and and his shadow Noel Eggins brought back so many great memories. I fist met Jim and Noel when racing at Castlereagh in the 70’s at the Chesterfield (Jim’s long term sponsor) event when Noel went out of his way to help fix a problem in my altered and we kept meeting up in the years that followed.
In the 90’s I tried to return the favour by prepping the Calder and AIR tracks where Jim set many records with Bruce tuning and Noel still looking after everyone. Thanks Clay and g’day and best wishes to Bruce, Phil , Jim, Noel and the team racing the Spring Nationals at The Bend’s grand opening event in 3 weeks time. - Steve Wilson….

My audio was marginal, but when he mentioned Mike Dunn, I had to comment. My home track, built circa 1965-7, is Firebird outside of Boise.
As we were returning from a trip to Cali we got fuel about 2hrs away, and while there heard on radio that there was an accident at the track. Big Jim was apparently returning to the pits via the hot lane that was near parallel at tree, then doglegged at 800ft+- as it neared the pits.
They apparently had brought the match race cars onto the strip for some reason, then decided to return via the hot lane with engine running!
Jim blipped the throttle, distorting the body, causing the throttle to hang!!!
He sped the wrong way down the hot lane and veered off the hot lane crashing through a snack stand or some such, causing people to be injured!
Crazy to hear of this while returning from vacation and at 90 miles from home!
Poor Big Jim was likely doing what the track managers approved, and instead had a horrific spectator involved accident.
I bet Mike was there, as this was in about 1975 or later, helping his dad!
Needless to say, lawsuits were filed, track managers changed procedures , no longer allowing cars to return to pits via the hot lane while under power!
Love your content, Clay! As a 68 yr old race fan, hearing Mike Dunn's name triggered that memory!
Good luck as season draws to a close!!

Wow! I remember going to Englishtown as a kid and was not allowed to go in the pits because I was told it was a state law that you had to have a drivers license. I was really upset because I could not get close to the cars or get any autographs. The drivers were my hero, and I could not meet them!

Phil Read goes back here in the UK to Phil riding for Yamaha on his 250CC whacking past the 500CC Manx Nortons, one ridden by Bill Ivy, my hero. He was a sight to see, there was only a 1000rpm power band then so he had 6 gears to account for this. I followed a DBD 34 BSA Goldy up to Snetterton and Brands Hatch to see Phil. The bike was running Castrol R too :) There is an interesting story about him, but I'll not bore you with that, but it does include the filming Of 007's Thunderball and a BSA 650CC Super Rocket :)

I grew up next to a speedway rider on solo's the smell of Castrol R a plenty that glorious smell and the sounds . I graduated to help him push start the bike a Jawa putting ya hand in the tiny triangle flap between wheel & frame to push the choke I learned right quick how to or not to place fingers. Yet again another great walk down memory lane from one of the nicest racers Australia has so humble and knowledgeable thanks Clay & Phil for the chat .
