- Just had the Journey's Off Road 5" lift Kit and 4X4 Transfer case swap done the other day and am driving to New Jersey - This is the first chance I had to do a video on it after driving from Prescott, AZ to Oklahoma - Since this video I've had a chance to use the 4 wheel drive on some dirt roads in Arkansas and it works great
I travel anywhere in the country for high end carpentry work - This vehicle is being dialed in so I can do back woods cabin work - If you have a cabin in a remote area and want it finished off, custom interior work including furniture feel free to contact me - mikezdesign on Instagram - Mike Z design on facebook

*2022 EDIT - The dangerous swaying of the rear end wasn't really about the load on the roof, it was the woefully weak factory springs and the fact that Journey's didn't put the air bags back on. I had them send me the airbags when I was in NJ but they didn't send all the hardware so I had to spend more money. The leaking transfer case cost me another $150 to have repaired. a couple of the bolts holding the rear shackles in place came lose and a few things were broken during the install - I've done several videos on the subject of the lift and the rear springs since this video - Here's one of them, I hope it helps: • AWD/4x4 Astro Van Lift...
Hey I was told we are supposed to use auto track 2 for the transfer fluid. It’s blue maybe you should look into it. Mine had a small leak I switched to the auto track and the leak went away
I believe that's for the AWD transfer case - This is the NP233C 4x4 case
@@AstroVanTribe well that’s good to know when I switch over. Thanks man keep it up great vids, love the beard
To fix to offset with the steering wheel, disconnect it at the new extension, turn the wheel to straight then reconnect the extension. 🤙🏻
Front end alignment tool care of it
First of all, thank you Michael for all your very useful videos. I am thinking of converting my AWD into a 4x4. I already have a rebuilt transfer case, do you have a rough idea of what it might cost to put it together after I order a 4x4 kit from Journeys Off Road? And... I heard people are stuck with the service AWD light always on after the conversion. Do you have the same problem? Thanks
The kit comes with the wiring so you don't have that issue - I suspect the guys who have the light one did a DIY system - Journey's has worked out all the bugs, I just had a bad experience with their quality of workmanship and BS - Once you get everything you need together you can do it yourself - I don't know what a shop might charge you
Do you feel the difference driving in daily drive before and after 4x4 installation? Safety? I am just thinking should I install it 4x4. I am not often in offroad , but sometimes.., so far my stock transfer case served me well so far. But always thinking about NP233 instal . And perhaps with rear wheel drive mode it would be more milage rather than always AWD? what is your opinion.Appreciate
I got better MPG's after installing the 4x4 case as it's in 2WD all the time, now - I'm modifying my van for a reason, to make it more 4x4 capable, that's not for everyone. If your AWD is functioning perfectly and you're not getting a little crazy off road regularly then you don't need it
@@AstroVanTribe Thanks
Dang man. Transfercase is expensive. How much did you pay for your astro?
$7K
Hello!! You actually did the same thing I’m doing early next year (2021). I am driving my 2005 GMC Safari to Journey’s to get the 5 inch lift and 4WD. I have a brand new transfer case (thanks for the tip), and I did plan for them to have the van for 2 days to install everything. I do have a question about the steering extension. Did you ever get your steering wheel straight?? Do you think that was a result of them trying to get you done in a day?? Mike told me the same thing about installing in one day, but I told him that I will there for 2. Also did they have to trim your fenders to fit the wheels and tires?? Thanks for your time and hope to hear back from you!!
The steering wheel went to normal after I had the alignment done in Virginia... My transfer case still leaks and I was put off by Mike telling me it was somehow my fault for distracting Tom in some way (I've been wrenching in vehicles for over 30 years) - no need to trim my fenders for the 28" tires I have - I'm planning to put on almost 30" tires this upcoming week and anticipate no issues... I did get my airbags back on - made the spacers myself and had them on all in a couple hours... Those guys make good products but they aren't Astro Van gurus 🙂 - I'm planning a follow-up video soon - been living out of the van for two months here in Jersey and will be heading back west next week - I'll likely have the leak fixed in LA which will cost me money but I don't feel like going back over there... The 4x4 is awesome, every AWD Astro should have this conversion, you'll love it
So the van has 2wd 4 hi and 4 low with this transfer case?
@@GreaseMonkey-zm2ex yes, 2wd all the time now, with the 4hi/low
Awesome. I'm gonna have to replace the transmission soon. Might do this swap while I'm at it.
Nice van. What size tires does the 5 inch let you run?
I'm thinking about 30" tires.. you can go bigger and trim
2:00 THATS WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS WATCH THE WORK BEING DONE THEN DRIVE IT LOCALLY FOR A COUPLE HOURS BEFORE CALLING IT GOOD.
Just bought a 05safari and the same kit and lift you got.....any extra advice
My big thing is the squirrelly rear suspension - Empty it probably rides fine and if you're going to do a lot of off-road with an empty vehicle it might be better but I don't see how anyone does the 5" lift on stock springs and doesn't have the same issue - It seems to me most people who do this upgrade also do some kind of camper style build so they must have added a helper spring or went with S10 rear springs
Did you get a "new" (rebuilt) transfer case from them? If so I hope you're doesn't leak :) Other than that small leak I'm pretty happy - I wish they would have put the helper spring on at the very least - I mean, the van was right there and they could see all the weight in it - They should have put the air bags back on, the riser blocks I figured out later only took me a few minutes to make - When they mailed them to me they also didn't include all the hardware so I had to spend another $40 on bolts - You're better off doing it yourself - Good luck - You'll dig it
@@AstroVanTribe guy at journeys told me to get the monroe oe spectrum shocks and yes I ordered their transfer case....I am using it to drive on the beach
What does the 3rd Gen have different then the 2nd Gen
Rear disk break ?
16" 6 lug wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, larger brakes no EGR valve, better suspension, and some other things I can't think of
What size of tire are you running?
I don't remember what size those tires were, been through two different sizes since this video was put up - Currently running 235/85R16 (32")
Astro meet soon folks
Got some tires and wheels for you here in jersey if you still need em
I'm in Los Angeles - Hope to do wheels and tires later this week
nice
What size tire is on there in this video? Thanks
235 r65 17 - they are 28" tall - I'm looking for stock Chevy 6 lug wheels (16" or 17") to get the offset back to factory then going with about a 30" tall tire
@@AstroVanTribe i have stock chevy astro wheels available with the center caps. i just changed mine when i lifted my van
@@swedishiansvantesson3672 where are you?
@@AstroVanTribe Where you get the rims? and what offset were they?
@@Skummy123 The wheels are OEM 16" 6 lug Astro Van/Chevy rims - I just stripped them and painted them

Bitchin van man ! Hey I have been doing a little research into these and seeing some people mentioning the rear door seals on the rear doors like yours having leaking problems. Have you experienced this problem ? Is it even a problem ? Is there a fix ?
Mine don't leak - I inspected my rubber and it's still in good shape but I did find some crap in there so I cleaned it out. I do that in one of my later videos. There are replacement seals available but I don't have that information on hand
Nice rig
Mines identical but safari. Not nearly as mint
They didn't check there work. You shouldn't have to make repairs . There testing was lacking at best.
I know but I couldn't bring myself to bring the van back to them - see the next video I did on the van after I got home to understand the BS 🤣 it's going to cost me $150 to fix the leak, not the end of the world
Here's the link to more of the BS you might enjoy :)

Oop... This is the video where I bring up all the BS... I o so many I forget:
ruclips.net/video/UQs-gFJmOZs/видео.html
Yeah, this vid makes me not want to go there.
@@dattran6372 yeah, on top of everything else a couple bolts just backed away from the frame where they didn't tighten up one of the leaf spring shackles - They make a good product but you might be better off installing yourself or paying someone else to do the work...
