Kids today will never know the excitement of buying the game in a store and staring at the box reading everything multiple times giving you a glimpse of what was to come as you sat in the car on the way home... Then as the game installed reading the little intro booklet over and over.....
fucking true. I could cry
and being startled by the loud as heck sound when you need to change CDs. Again.

Back in the day I would force myself to read the entire manual before even starting the game. I no longer do that of course, you'd be lucky to even find a manual these days. The greatest manual ever might be the original Fallout.
that is so, SO true my friend...
"How did you get that arm?"

“Take special note of the moments you have today and those you have around you, because fifteen years from now, you’ll be doing the same damn thing.” Amen brother.
I must admit I was one of the people who didn't know about dragging spells to your hotbar. I played a NE hunter until like lvl 7 with the spell book open and i constantly spammed the autoattack button, not knowing it was a toggle feature as such. I may look back and laugh at this, but ill never retrieve the sense wonder and feelings of an overwhelming expansive world that I had back then.
At least you have the balls to admit this. LOL.
I was too. I miss those days. My main was a nelf hunter. It took me months to realize I could use the boat outside of Dalaran, not to mention the flight paths.
I played a warrior in vanilla and I kept stacking agility for the crit chance instead of strength. I thought crit was the way to go so I was stacking agility gear. BAD idea.
Yes, that sense of ignorant exploration and naive wonder was a huge part of Vanilla WoW's magic. I did a *ton* of super noob stuff back then too.
For example, I absolutely hated to quest, and so I literally grinded mobs all the way up to 60. And that grind was made all the more torturous since 1) I was a warrior who played by myself; and 2) I didn't understand how the gearing system worked at all.
I would grind mobs for hours so that I could sell the drops for copper and silver and then buy new gray-tier gear from blacksmith NPCs. And since I was only upgrading my armor value and none of my other stats, not even stam, I had to farm mobs that were several levels below me or else I'd die.
And I did that for *months* all the way up until like level 38(!) when someone finally randomly came up to me in ararthi highlands where I was farming the same raptor spawns day after day and said something like "Um, why are you still wearing all gray gear and farming these same mobs all day?"
That guy was *super* nice. He basically held my hand and walked me through how to play the game properly. He even escorted me to the major Alliance faction cities like Iron Forge which blew my fucking mind since they were so freaking cool.
I don't remember that guy's screen name or even which class he played (all I remember is that his character was a dwarf male), but I still remember you dude 15 years later.
@@TaskForceSixTwoSix dwarfs are always so nice, lol. I have my own same stories with dwarfs helping me

“Mez” actually came over from Everquest. Enchanters has a spell called “Mesmerize” which would basically put a group of mobs asleep for 24 seconds. Was very handy in dungeons where you could focus down a particular mob.
Yeah my guess was either EQ or daoc. Interesting to know!
Mez with charmed mobs were insanely OP
yea it is just called CC now from what I remember lol
@@madseasonshow It was in DnD long before EQ.
I always wondered why World of Warcraft didn't have a Sleep spell since it would have been easy to add. The closest we got was the Druid's Hibernate spell which only worked on dragons and beasts.

I still remember the announcement about Blizzard merging with Activision and how the community reacted. Believe it or not, but the people that were warning that this would be the end of Blizzard's reputation for quality were a pretty small minority in the community. They were laughed at, dismissed, and piled on by the vast majority of WoW's playerbase. But they were ultimately proven right.

That ending was too true man. We tend to look back to the past when days were simpler and get sad, yet don't enjoy the present as we should. Certain things like games or music will take us back to the simpler times in our life but we need to enjoy the present and look forward in the future despite how hard it is.
dont worry, the present today would be the sweet past 10 years later from now and be sad again

Young gamers these days don’t realise that magazines like this were often the only source of gaming information and walkthrough. Sure, we had IGN guides and such, but you had to go search them out and they weren’t always great quality. Gaming mags really were the RUclips guide of our day!
I was thinking of having a miniseries of the same style - still have loads of old Game Informer, GamePro, etc lying around somewhere...would be cool to cover the old greats like OoT, FFVII-IX etc

woah... the outro really got me emotional this time.. great video thank you!
It sounds condescending and boomerish but I sincerely feel bad for people that will never know the hype that was early WoW. There's a triple A open world every other week these days, but Blizzard entering the MMO market when all we had were the EQ/AC/UO trifecta. Not knocking those games, but Blizzard was one of if not THE biggest PC developers at the time, and anticipating an MMO with that kind of pedigree and budget was just world changing at the time. And the question as to whether it lived up to the hype can be answered in the fact that we're still here watching videos about the damn game in 2020.
The game overdelivered. That is something that very rarely happens anymore
"It sounds condescending and boomerish"
Seriously, why do people apologize for trivial shit all the time?
WoW really had a huge impact when it came out. I got into it when Burning Crusade first came out, I was playing Guild Wars 1 a lot and some of my friends from the guild were talking about trying WoW along with it. Best times ever, haha.

Hope you're doing good man. Thanks for all the great videos.
Man what a cool video. Can we get the 4 hour version of this? Cheers man, thanks for making this video. Truly highlighting the importance of social interaction, and community for what makes an MMO.
Something that remains true all these years later - up to Wrath, the game had great audio feedback. You could close your eyes, and know what kind of attacks and spells were going on, could probably guess at the environment, could even get a good idea of what classes were involved.
Sound design used to serve the gameplay more than it does now, in a lot of games.
Man this took me back. Great video!

ignorance is bliss, i think a lot of us wish we could go back to a time when we just diddnt know. I diddnt know much about vanilla before classic but i had still played PS. If i could erase my memory of all MMO and go back to classic drop and do it again i would in a heart beat. knowledge isnt always a strength IMO
I get that with movies sometimes too - sometimes something is so good you wish you could have that first experience over and over. I'd say the same for bfa, but for different reasons :)
@@madseasonshow I have that thought with the original Matrix movie and Ultima Online.
@@madseasonshow My reaction to your biceps
Vanilla was known for its social dynamincs, everyone was clueless back in those days which made stuff more mystical in an sense when exploring stuff. Too bad for people who weren't there to remember those times because such experience will never be a thing anymore with all the tools we have today to min-max eveything and checking the meta instead of experiencing the journey.
Hey, Rend is the first ability you use after you charge at a mob during leveling! Before you have mortal strike or blood thirst, it has the highest damage and definitely better rage efficiency than mortal strike. And a warrior kills a mob so damn slow that sometimes it takes 2 full rend durations before the mob/ I died!
Even sunder armor is often more efficient than BT/MS due to the time the mobs take to die. I saw most success with charge->rend->sunders until half hp->pool rage and repeat. At 35 sweeping strikes+whirlwind+whirlwind axe made pulling more mobs and skipping sunders viable. Even then rend and sunder are good skills to use when killing 1 by 1.
heroic strike is higher dps? and used more than rend so spending 10-15g on leveling rend isnt that much helpful
@@blizzardaddict1383 that's not true. When most of my swings got parried dodge missed and I'm using a 2h to level, I have no rage to HS
@@blizzardaddict1383 Yes but you don't get any rage from next swing, which is something like 20-40 rage depending on gear and RNG of the swing. So you do like 60 damage or whatever heroic strike is for you at the time, for 35-55 rage. It's a very expensive burst of damage, and you can do way more damage spending the rage on rend and sunders.
Heroic strike is only really good for dual wield fury warriors in the end game, and even then mostly due to how it interacts with miss chance on the offhand, which is outside the scope of my comment.
Amazing video man, thank you for such great content!

wow those biceps on national coming out day??
In Poland we had our CD-ACTION magazine (in fact it's still around even today!) and I remember their WoW review. I was just a little kid so I couldn't afford it by my own, and my parents were too poor to buy my one. So I had to play bugged private servers (honestly nothing was working back there), but after years of waiting, finally I found a job and my first thing I bought with my first payment was World of Warcraft up to WoTLK (because it was around that time).
And then I remember playing in warm summer days with my window opened up, a little breeze was just calmly going in to my room, everybody were sleeping and I was questing. I was in almost trans-like state. I didn't wanted to eat, pee, drink. I was so immersed that I was able to sit even 28 hours non-stop.
