While I recommend listening to the whole Impera album I would also highly recommend watching Ghost’s Live From the Ministry album release party. They play a few of their newer songs live there
I actually think the guitar on those live songs sound better. Especially Sunshine. That strat sounded amazing.

The eyes are the windows of the soul, right? What would the spillways of the soul be? Tears. Fighting the darkness within will lead to tears eventually, either from frustration or relief. Basically, the song is about catharsis after trying to use religion to "control" the darker parts of yourself. And that is damn deep.
Spill ways of the soul are your blood veins. cut the right ones and your soul can escape the body

There are not many people like Tobias Forge (Papa), who have a vision, and brilliantly execute it with the consistency that Ghost does. The quality level on all of their albums is sky-high. This one is so catchy, and still includes multiple key changes and a ripping guitar solo.
When this album dropped I legit listened to it over 20 times. I’ll never get sick of it 🤘

I've never heard Ghost before this video, I really expected them to be way more hardcore than this. I was preparing myself for some black metal or some shit, but this surprised the hell out of me. Something about it reminds me of old Alice Cooper stuff. It's actually a catchy tune. I'm digging on it. Thanks Alex!

Yeah, my husband cannot understand why I like metal/ hard rock then he heard Ghost and was like that's Ghost?!?! I expected them to be way too heavy for me but this is nice.

I like Griftwood but also Watcher in the Sky. The whole album is really good.
Griftwood is awesome yet they've barely played it live (only once, I think) and it seems to get forgotten because it is in the back half of the album nestled between some of the album's less good songs.
Absolutely love Ghost. Saw them in March and gonna see them again in August. Tobias is amazing. They put on a phenomenal stage show. Impera is a great album. Thx Alex. 😁

Ghost is one of my favorite current era bands... This sounds more Bon Jovi, than Bon Jovi has in decades... He really knows how to make earworms.
That is exactly what I thought...Bon Jovi!! They are good but imo they are overrated and underrated at the same time.
As soon as the album dropped my son called me and said "listen to this song, it reminds me of something and I can't place it". I listened, and I'm like omg, it's like Bon Jovi all over again lol. LOVE LOVE LOVE this album! Can't wait to see them next month for the second time in my life, and the second time this year! They're new-ish to me, but I am totally hooked.

I absolutely love the 80s rock/metal feel of this entire album. It's been on heavy rotation in my house since release day.
I'm a Christian and I freely admit that I love these guys. I've been a fan since I saw them open for Maiden in 2017. Many of their lyrics are intended to provoke thought and questions about your spirituality and there has never been anything wrong with that. And even if I'm not 100% on board with some of the lyrics, it's music. It's entertaining and they (Tobias, really) do it so darned well. They have yet to let me down. Cheers!
Felt this one big dog. I love the music but as a strong believer myself there’s this battle of figuring out how I should feel about it. I love thought provoking stuff in general and psychology type stuff and music that makes you think and these guys are amazing at that while making a damn good, quality song… your comment gives me more to think about and more of that type of dichotomy that I think I need. I believe voluntarily putting ourselves in evil situations is generally bad but also people in general all have an evil/or shadow side of them because as Christianity teaches we are broken people, forgiven and loved fearlessly by God. And follow for those reasons among many others, and what does it truly mean to be a follower of Christ if we only ignore and shut out the “shadow side” entirely instead of acknowledging it and letting it make you think knowing that your(our) faith is the truth, and the way. Sorry if this is one big rant but again your comment provoked me to think out loud. Thank you brother🙏🏼 haha

The whole new album is fire 🔥 Ghost is one of my favorite rock/metal bands of all time, people just hating cause they expect something else, but they're just hit makers and I love it! The live from the ministry would be cool to check out. The satanic imagery and lyrics is just their brand lol like a lot of metal and the way he does it differently every song is creative , dance to life eternal at my Wedding as my Wife and I are big fans!
I've been a fan of Ghost since their first album, and each album since has connected with me pretty quickly and I could pick out my favorite song(s) easily, but for some reason, Impera just wasn't the same and I've had trouble connecting with the songs, until I watched this video today. Thank you for your insight, Alex, and for helping me make a breakthrough with one of my favorite bands who's latest album I was struggling with getting into.

Impera is such a good album! Respite on the spitelfields is my favourite. Fun fact on spillways vid, that’s the touring band with him. Previous vids have featured others playing the instruments.
I love that you pulled up the lyrics to actually analyze the whole song and not just the sound. I feel like a lot of Ghost's songs have a lot of meaning that gets skipped over in a lot of other reactions because they're too busy comparing what they're hearing to other bands/songs that sound similar.

People have a life and can't get up to speed on everything - especially things that aren't in their everyday interests like Ghost. I love ghost and jumped on this album like a fat kid in a donut but bands that I like I sometimes don't hear their album until a year later. Depends how busy someone's day to day life is.

for real, i can not stop listening to it, and i knew the first time i heard it.
Definitely prompts feelings of nostalgia. For me it's the harmonized vocal sections and of course the Aldo Nova groovy pop metal style. Thanks for another good video.
Actually the entire IMPERA album it’s really catchy and in fact Spillways is my fav from the album, I love the 80 vibe of it.

I love this song, and I love the lyrics and they do sync up with my personal beliefs. I've known a lot of terrible people who do unspeakable shit, and they believe they can walk into a church, tell God they're sorry, and come out smelling like a rose afterwords. Rinse and repeat. There are plenty of churches that condone this type of behavior, too. This and Griftwood hit pretty hard form me. Tobias is very clear in interviews what Grifwood is about.

Ghost is such an amazing band, I was lucky enough to see them in February before Imperia dropped, they do not disappoint, if you ever get the chance to see Ghost live, do it. The music alone is amazing, but it's a whole new level to see a ritual in person

Theres so many catchy songs from Ghost...this is one of them for sure...the ways that they make subject such as rats and the plague into catchy songs has always been one of their big draws for me..

Alex, I'm so glad you got around to reviewing Spillways, because it's a really personal song to me. You hit the nail on the head when you compared "the spillways of your soul" with selfharm. However, the song to me means getting beyond all of that particular form of darkness. To me the spillways make the bad cr*p drain away, instead of feeding those memories that hurt.
I'm not sure Tobias Forge/Ghost meant their lyrics to be interpreted that way, but for me it's my truth, and isn't it great when songs give our souls and hearts the strength to speak up?

I live Ghost and the ghouls. The way they interact with each other on stage and with the audience is crazy awesome. It makes you feel part of the group. I love your reactions. They are so authentic filled with emotions. It feels like a little kid being so excited about something new and can't control. Again love Ghost and your reactions to them. I would suggest listening to "Bible". The lyrics you will have a blast with the interpretation

Dude since the album came out in april. I have been wanting you to hear respite on the Spitalfields. Absolutely beautiful track by them. With them being my favorite band of all time respite on the Spitalfields became my favorite song by them instantly after hearing the new album the day it came out.

Definitely one of the better songs on the new album. But the whole album is pretty good tbh. One of my favorites from it is "griftwood". Though, I really hope that some point you are gonna dive into some of their older, spookier stuff. Have you done "year zero"? That song is an absolute must!

They are very catchy, but you should listen to Monstrance Clock, Mary On A Cross, and Mummy Dust. I guarantee you will love them!
