- Barbara Stanwyck at her best, should've gotten the Oscar for this. Also, the score by Franz Waxman. Notice the simple 3-note motif @ 3:01 being turned into a lavish symphony of horror. Directed by Anatole Litvak, written by Lucille Fletcher.
@MoeWesley you're welcome, I drive by Sutton Place and Queensboro Bridge often and I think of poor Leona all the time! You're correct about carrying the film on her own, and let's not forget that it's often much more difficult to be a film actor than a theater actor, where you don't have sustain the character and the tension in a scene between camera and lighting breaks that can take days. Absolute genius, Ms. Stanwyck.
As an actor, how do you get yourself in a mental stage like that? Aazing performance by Barbara Stanwyck!
Coming from somekne who grew up acting in school and plays it’s quite easy for me. I just have to put myself in the characters shoes literally. I do things like switch my perfume for each new role, style my hair different etc. it’s all about acting lol
She clearly should have won the Oscar for this.
My father saw this as a kid and said it scared the shit out of him. He was 11. Barbara Stanwyck deserved an Oscar for it, her greatest performance.
Correct.
This scene alone did deserve the Academy Award. What an outstanding performance! The way she conveyed intense emotions was extraordinary. What made Barbara Stanwyck such a consummate actress was her versatility. She could do drama and comedy to perfection. Thank you for sharing this gem!
My pleasure!
My favorite part in dis movie. "We don't take no messages, ma'am. Wouldn't do NO good"
"What number is this? What am I calling"
"BOW-WEE TOO WON TOWSEN, MA'AM.....DA CITY MORGUE !"
The first Stanwyck movie I ever saw on the late show when I was about 11. Scared me stiff. I became a Stanwyck fan for life! Forget Davis and Hepburn! Stanwyck could act rings around them put together! She's incredible!
I love Bette Davis to the moon and back but I gotta agree: Stanwyck's acting is mesmerizing.
@@stefanie3831 she was ahead of her time. I love Davis too, and Hepburn. But Stanwyck’s performances hold up. They’re contemporary, even though the films aren’t. The reason she didn’t get the Oscar recognition during her career (although she was nominated 6 times) was because she was a freelance actress, not tied to any one studio during the studio era. If she had been exclusively a Warner Brothers or 20th Century Fox, etc., actress, she would have had multiple statuettes in my opinion. She could play comedy as well as dramas and Westerns. She moved between genres seamlessly. I love Stanwyck. Her performance in The Thornbirds on TV was what made the mini series. She won a well deserved Emmy for that performance. Great lady and actress! 🎬
Barbara Stanwyck should have won the Oscar for her performance in this movie. Burt Lancaster was great, too, as always.
Barbara Stanwyck one of my all time favorite actresses...
Barbara Stanwyck once remarked to Robert Osborne after an interview at her home, "Just remember I'm still just Ruby Stevens from Brooklyn".
It's hideously apt -- and, yes, tragic -- that Leona's hypochondria has been part of her life and mentality for so long that, at the most critical moment of her life, it functions as an ACTUAL disability, and costs her her life. This is REALLY an intense movie -- and perhaps its most impressive achievement is that it gets us to CARE about a woman who has very few redeeming qualities. Barbara Stanwyck was one HELL of an actress; that she never won an Oscar was a disgrace.
She definitely should have won the oscar. This movie gave me insomnia for days. Seriously. And we can see that mental health problems can cause massive damage and is not just "fooling around"
oh honey how could there be anyone in the house? the UNLOCKED window would keep anyone out.
@@scotsman6712 Haha. I was thinking the same thing.
It's rare that a criminal movie shocked me that much, even without tons of blood or else, just bc of the torture of the unknown
Is anyone else curious about how she met her demise? I'm guessing strangulation.
They don’t make ‘‘em like Stanwyck anymore …⭐️⭐️
Performance worthy of an Oscar, no doubt about it.
She was nominated bt lost to Jane Wyman that year (Johnny Belinda).
Perhaps one of the most tense 10 minutes in film history. Stanwyck was electrifying.
I watched this movie in class, and the acting is truley spectacular! After this scene though, I got a nightmare I was Mrs. Stevenston and I got stabbed and I could feel it 😭
At the beginning of the movie, they said the two subway cars would be running past each other when Leona is killed. The music in this scene is so incredibly strong!
Absolute Oscar performance...How she sustained the plot and tension in this movie nearly on her own, partifularly in light of the period is a wonder to behold. We don't judge Restoration Comedy by sitcom sensibility. Nor do we judge this magnificent performance against the modern penchant for substituting casual for real. Thank you!
“So you want to be an actress, young lady?”
Rent and watch “Sorry, Wrong Number”, “The Lady Eve”, “Stella Dallas”, “Baby Face”, and “Double Indemnity”.
Those five films will teach you everything you’ll ever need to know about working as an actress, either on the stage, or in front of a camera.
Forget any and all slasher movies for sheer horror-this will scare the 💩outta you.
I'm referencing this movie now with my two nieces...we love this
Without a doubt the best thriller ever made!!!
Stanwyck should be a 2-time Oscar Winner: For Double indemnity and This
Yes, her performance in DI was the climax of Film Noir. The epitome of the genre
Stella Dallas too. Lady Eve. Sh3 was phenomenal and could handle multiple genres.
@@MrBuddybones ● I was gonna mention _Stella Dallas._ I've never been a great fan of Stanwyck ... but ... MAN ! ... when I saw _Stella Dallas_ ... I had to fight the tears ! Stanwyck being overlooked by The Academy, is one of the reasons, over time, viewership has collapsed ( people who get the Award ... don't always deserve one ; people who do ... don't ) !
@@cliffgaither you need to see her in Double Indemnity and The Lady Eve. One iconic film noir and one excellent comedy with Henry Fonda. Both are classics. For one of the best pre-code, early performances, see Baby Face. Maybe you’ll change your mind when you see her range. No phony Mid-Atlantic accent for Brooklyn born Ruby Stevens. She was ahead of her time, in my opinion. Her films may be dated, but her performances never are. ❤️
@@MrBuddybones :: I will definitely check-out Baby Face ! I've heard a lot about it. Thanks !
I'm glad I watched this during the daytime
Never remake a brilliant classic movie
Il thriller piu' bello della storia del cinema mondiale dal finale unico ed indimenticabile Barbara Stenwick semplicemente grandiosa una delle piu' grandi attrici di Hollywood resa immortale da film meravigliosi come questo.P.S. R.I.P.
When I was a kid..I watched this with my mom..and she confused the ending and told me the Dial M for Murder ending. Imagine my surprise when this ending came to be
i'm never staying home alone again.
*Who knows, someone could be making a phone call right now about you. Doesn’t matter when, doesn’t matter how, Heck It doesn’t even matter where...!*
Get a Pit Bull, German Shepard, or Rottweiler. It'll either scare them off or make them their dinner.
Unforgetable! 😱😱😱
The big rock on her finger and the beautiful cigarette lighter. I think this might be the best ending in a movie.
The only mystery I’d want solved is the identity of the person who played the unseen shadowy hired killer
He’s the hitman hired by George, it was revealed during that crossed wires phone call overheard by Leona in the beginning of the film.
@@brunoantony3218 oh I thought the killers name was George
Equally amazing as Stanwyck in this scene are Lancaster's reactions -- mostly with his eyes. Bear in mind, he's just delivering his lines without hearing her anguished ravings on the other end of the line. That takes real acting skills. And his final confession is devastating, when you consider that she died knowing the truth, just seconds later.
pwthcim LOL!! That would be funnier than hell to see Lily doing her "Ernestine" character in a sequel to this movie.
The closed captioning to this is hilarious.
I know, right? I’m appalled.
Classic 1940's film noir.
You won`t want to answer the phone ever again after watching this!!!
@HeatherGlen33 She did receive an Oscar in 1982, an Academy Honorary Award "for superlative creativity and unique contribution to the art of screen acting. Last time I checked, Hepburn wasn't Jewish, neither was Bette Davis. Meryl Streep isn't Jewish either.
Miriam Hopkins performed "Sorry, Wrong Number" in a 60 minute version (also written by Lucille Fletcher) for the Australian LUX Radio Theatre in 1955.
Oddly, Miriam Hopkins had been married to Anatol LItvak who Directed the film version of "Sorry, Wrong Number" with Barbara Stanwyck. It is quite well done and Miriam Hopkins is ably assisted by the creme of Australian radio actors at that time.
Agnes Moorehead performed the radio play in 8 separate 30 minute versions on "SUSPENSE" from 1943 until 1961. The comparisons of the different radio adaptions are most interesting, as they all somewhat differ. Miriam Hopkins had more to work with as she performed the only known 60 minute radio version known to exist.
"Sorry, Wrong Number" is probably the most well known (and repeat performance requests from the listener's) radio drama of all time.
Barbara Stanwyck performed her own 60 min radio version, with Burt Lancaster as Henry (Lux Radio Theater in January1950), so Miriam Hopkins' isn't the only 60 min version known to exist. ruclips.net/video/2rU9_VIBt2Q/видео.html
Richard McLeod ■ Bro. ! I wish you hadn't mentioned Miriam Hopkins ! I never even thought of her in this role. Now that you let the cat-out-of-the-bag ... Hopkins was a brilliant actor. It didn't matter if another actress ( in the same movie w / her ) was more famous ; or had greater roles & acclaim ... Hopkins was always the center of every film ... No Matter ! how secondary her character ! She was mesmerizing, the moment you heard her voice.
_Thanks for the memories !_
Barbara Stanwyck is absolutely perfect and there will never be another actress of her stature. Yep, she should have won the 1948 Academy Award for Best Actress, losing to.... Loretta Young (who remembers?)
This movie gives me anxiety😩😫
I own this movie ⭐⭐🎥⭐⭐⭐💄💅
Stanwyck was better than all of them, regardless of religion.
Barbara Stanwyck was also very good in the 1953 version of "Titanic", perhaps the best version of that fateful ship. And co-starring with Clifton Webb. Andruclips.net/video/LxOwWEzkl20/видео.html I loved her in "Thorn Birds" with the line to the young priest: "Kiss me. Kiss me on the lips."
Sorry, wrong film!!!
I know one gal that's been down on everything but the TITANIC.😂😂😂
Sorry Wrong Number is such a Great Movie 🍿. Barbara Stanwyck & Burt Lancaster were Super! It's a Shame that TCM Don't Play that Movie. Why, May I Ask? 🍿🏍️🚂🚆📷🇺🇸🐈
What a georgous mobile, simply perfekt and timeless
@gettyO89 The sequel has her twin sister investigating Leona's death. It features Lily Tomlin as the phone lady.
Lily on"laugh in",that's one ring-a-ding-e,that's two ring-a-ding-e.😂😂😂
Stanwyck is brilliant; the versatility in her work, missing the mannerisms of Davis. Fantastic.
After 4 yrs of hearing this from our english class, I never thought this has a movie.

So Evans was planning to commit suicide after midnight. Because he was about to be arrested.
I didn't realize until another user told me in the comments. Pretty dark
Oops. Wrong party line movie. I was looking for Doris Day and Rock Hudson.
🎃happy scary movie week🎃
Where can i download, i try torrent sites but didn't work
Wow!
Why did Evans gave her the number of a morgue?
Evans was going to commit suicide.
@@02chevyguy really? Oh my...

Stanwyck never received an Oscar for all of her outstanding work in every type of movie she made. She could play any role with such intensity. You have to be Jewish to get that. They come first, and the great ones are last. They own Hollywood, TV and radio. Always have.
Beth from L.A.
Shut up Beth.
Shut up, Beth.
WHAT THE HECK IS A MORG?
morgue, genius.
DANNY1 RUIZ Morgue is where dead folks go duh!
The person just asked a question, why say Duh? I didn’t know what a morgue was until 15 or 16. Who knows where your body goes when you die? I never thought about it as a kid.
A Karen
I want a remake with actress Ann Hathaway
In '89, they made a tv movie with a similar plot to this (with the same name). The characters' were totally different than what we have here, with Loni Anderson cast as "Leona Stephenson".
It was a total crash and burn.
I want a remake with NANCY PELOSI.
I’ve been alone for hours. I’ve been a prey to every kind of horrible call!!!
