Mark, you made me laugh today with the foam sponge brush tongue twister. Just what I needed. I also love what you have created with the foam brush. Its like a beautiful sky or northern lights are reflecting in the ocean. Fantastic. Well done. I also love that you explain everything you do in a calm and detailed way. I love to watch you creating stunning pieces of art, learning from you and reminding me to be mindful. Thank you. X 😊
Is it horrible of me that I sit with ice cream and hot tea in the northern Illinois winter and watch Mark create the most beautiful things. Just takes the stress off out of my past day and the sugar and calories NEVER just fall out of everything I snack on. Looks gorgeous ❤ it!!
What a pretty result. It does remind me of the northern lights in the dark sky. The pearl paints dry so colorful. I see why they are one of your favorites. Thank you for showing some easy techniques that produce such a beautiful painting. Thank you so much Mark for your creativity 😊
Thanks, Mark, for the inspiration and idea to use the sponge brush! I have not been able to get behind other dry swiping items, but love the effect of this one! Beautiful! ✨️
Love how you use your imagination to come up with these ideas, never would have thought to use a foam brush in this way. It's gorgeous, love the brightness of the colors, and how different it is, I love different.
Wow !!! Very Simple But With Such A Big Impact !! Beautiful!! Does remind me of the Northern Lights! Love the anticipation of yr experiment. Its Just So Much Fun. Great Job ! Here in the States we call it a Foam Brush .
That is amazing! I wonder why the colors are so much more vibrant than they usually are? But I do love it and think your new technique is genius. Thanks for experimenting and sharing your results. Denise ❤
Gorgeous outcome. Your experiment turned out in spades!! It does look like Northern Lights. The colors have a depth to them. Two thumbs up, Mark.😊 FOAM PAINT BRUSH here in US.😂
That is gorgeous!! I have some of the sponge tip brushes. Guess what I'm trying today except I don't have any pearlescent paints🫢. I'll see what happens with metallics. Fantastic idea, Mark - I love it 🎨 xox
Thanks for the reminder! By the way, I love the textured based a lot. I can't say 'foam brush sponge' more than once so I have dubbed it a 'foam thingie.'
This is probably one of my favorite pearl paintings I've ever seen. Made me wonder what a tree swipe would look like. Have you ever done a tree swipe? Amazing work Mark. I love the ideas you come up with.
Now you've done it! This is another piece you can be proud of. Thank you for sharing such ideas like this that you have in that creative brain of yours. Who woulda thought those paints could even do this and turn out so cool! Keep up those awesome brain exercises 😂. Im loving it Mark.
WOOOOOOW Mark, what a stunning outcome!!!! This is my absolute favourite pearlescent colour piece. It's fascinating how much depth this technique can create. All those lines from the swipes look like 3D. The colours dried beautifully, especially the violet. Some areas on the center line somehow remind me of teeth - LOL. Great job again 🖒💖
So cute that foam sponge brush or sponge foam brush, :)))) Awsooome composition! I would try to varnish with glitter spray :D But it's only my mood from November ..I've been doing this on all my dark, black or indigo base :D Thank you for inspiring us, Mark!
Omg i need to try this right now! So prettyful! Mark, what works best for you when mixing your pearl paints? Floetrol? Water? Both? I can't afford to "practice" w these expensive lil suckers. Amsterdam makes good stuff tho. Thank you
Interesting technique. I like that foam brush better than using cut up pieces of paper towel. There didn’t seem to be very many cells or lacing. Is that because you did a dry brush?
Yes 👍🏻 Pearlescent’s work due to the dark background and how the light goes through the paint and bounces off the dark background and through the colors
Gesso can be used to protect and enhance surfaces such as canvas, paper, wood and board -making them less absorbent and smoother. If you plan to use oil or acrylic paints on any absorbent surface, you should apply gesso before doing so. Most canvases I get are already primed but I use gesso if painting over a painting too
Gorgious. But i don't understand. You say you use colors, but when i look in the beginning, when you put the colors on the canvas,l the colours are ... white ! How is that possible? I only see the colors at the end...😮
These are Amsterdam Pearl colours. They appear white but dry to these gorgeous colours. I ad some for Christmas, still waiting for the inspiration to use them. This demo might be that inspiration.
Oh wow youre so kind to show and explain everything im gonna buy those paints i need to try this thank you keep sharing . God bless you ❤

Mark, this is a truly gorgeous experiment! It is funny I was thinking Northern Lights when you said it! It is truly beautiful!
Many thanks! 🙏
I love this effect 🌈 not only because it looks great but it used less paint! 🎨 win win..
Thank you so much 😀 Yes absolutely so easy to create with such little paint 🎨
Love how you use your imagination to come up with these ideas, never would have thought to use a foam brush in this way. It's gorgeous, love the brightness of the colors, and how different it is, I love different.

This is so beautiful.
Thank you so much ☺️
This has inspired me to give it a try. I really have a hard time mixing my ghost colors, but now I want to try again.
Thanks Mark❤❤
Go for it! 💜
Verry great effect, I love it
Thank you 🤩
Wow it is this great. Love it
Thank you so much!☺️
This is very nice, so soothing to watch! It looks like teeth to me- an X-ray/bite wing lol!
Oh yes! I can see that. Thank you
That is amazing! I wonder why the colors are so much more vibrant than they usually are? But I do love it and think your new technique is genius. Thanks for experimenting and sharing your results. Denise ❤
Thank you so much Denise. It’s to do with the volume of paint. There isn’t as much therefore it reacts and dries quicker than puddles xx
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Interesting. Thanks for the info. Denise ❤

Metallics will also be gorgeous- you won’t need too much paint so bear that in mind
Thanks for the reminder! By the way, I love the textured based a lot. I can't say 'foam brush sponge' more than once so I have dubbed it a 'foam thingie.'
Love it.
Thank you 🤩
Wow this turned out wonderfully ❤. I thought you'd need more black paint to react with the other paints... so thank you so much for experimenting 😊
Thank you so much Maddy 🤩
Woohoo! First thumbs up and first to comment 40 seconds after you posted 😁😆 watching the video now.
This is probably one of my favorite pearl paintings I've ever seen. Made me wonder what a tree swipe would look like. Have you ever done a tree swipe? Amazing work Mark. I love the ideas you come up with.
Thank you so much. I have done a tree swipe but not in pearlescent paint. Great idea 💡

Shared. Hi Mark, Happy New Year! Lovely creation ✨
Happy new year! Thank you 🙏
Your colors really pop! I tried a swipe w/these colors but didn’t get the beautiful results you did. Back to the drawing board! 😄Great job, Mark!!
Thank you so much. When swiping with these try and have a base that isn’t too thick in terms of volume 👍🏻
Love it 💖
Thank you 🤩
Hi Mark, question for you….what brand of gesso do you suggest?
Thanks 😊
@@kimmie2044 hi Kimmie! Tbh doesn’t matter whatever you have to hand. You just want to seal the canvas so it’s good to re-use 👍🏻

Wow! I love this… definitely adding this to my list. Wonder how it would look on my blue/black background? You inspire me so much!!! Thank you 💙💙💙💙
Thank you. Blue Black would be great! Remember the pearlescent paints are best on a darker tone background - have fun 🤩
Love this! I'm wondering what the colours would do if you put one on top of the other and then swipe? I can't imagine them muddying?
They shouldn’t muddy
I think trying the pull with a brush the size of the canvas would look good.
Yes that would be amazing!
What fun
Thank you! So much fun. 🤩
Omg i need to try this right now! So prettyful! Mark, what works best for you when mixing your pearl paints? Floetrol? Water? Both? I can't afford to "practice" w these expensive lil suckers. Amsterdam makes good stuff tho. Thank you
I use Owatrol/Floetrol with the ratio of 1:3 - so excited for you! Have fun 🤩
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt thank you so much!! I can't wait!! Enjoy@
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt oh wait lol 1:3 which way. Paint one or floetrol one?
@@harlottesgma7306 paint:pouring medium 1:3
WOW love how this turned out very pretty😍 I was wondering if this technique can be applied to the technique that Rinske Douna is doing lately
Yes I’m sure as long as the background is dark and wet
Interesting technique. I like that foam brush better than using cut up pieces of paper towel. There didn’t seem to be very many cells or lacing. Is that because you did a dry brush?
Thanks for watching! I didn’t get as many cells as I’d need to use more cell activator
What a great idea!! This is so pretty.. I'm thinking that you could also do this the same way but in a circle. What do you think?
Estelle you’re reading my mind. I’m currently doing a large circle ⭕️
I can't wait to see it! @@MarkJRatcliffeArt

Northern lights! Was the black you sponged on mixed with your PM? Love it!
Thank you. Yes it was 👍🏻
Do you mist the back of the canvas to tighten it up first?
No need but would do if iit needed it
Can PVA glue be used with water for medium and mixed with pearl paints and still keep the color of the paints?
Yes 👍🏻 Pearlescent’s work due to the dark background and how the light goes through the paint and bounces off the dark background and through the colors
What is gesso and why do you use it?
Gesso can be used to protect and enhance surfaces such as canvas, paper, wood and board -making them less absorbent and smoother. Bonjours est-ce que perlecence se color quand il est préparé à l avance merci
It’s all white then transforms when it reacts with dark paint 🎨
Gorgious. But i don't understand. You say you use colors, but when i look in the beginning, when you put the colors on the canvas,l the colours are ... white ! How is that possible? I only see the colors at the end...😮
