First-form fossils would be really cool, but would have to break the normal 'rules' entirely - MDB would have to trade the pokemon in from the start to use them as only one fossil per game is obtainable save for Gen I and the remakes (old amber).

Maybe try a "no strings attached" type of challenge? After earning each gym badge, you must catch and use a new team of pokemon to complete the next gym/elite four. Cannot catch or use the same pokemon previously used in the challenge.
Harder rules can definitely be added to this for increased difficulty, like no new moves can be taught to the pokemon or max team size of 3 pokemon, etc.
See this I wanna see. With maybe a level limit or he has to match the amount of Pokemon the gym leader has.

I feel like Mantyke, despite the huge grind neeeded to catch it up, would have been super useful. Since it can get Hydro Pump and Ice Beam (which would have been nice against Garchomp, if it could outspeed or survive, I suppose)

In my run I had Mantyke which would always survive one brick break when I could bait it by setting up reflect or light screen. But the AI is a real bitch and sometimes goes for Giga Impact which one shots even with reflect. Ah yeah, I didn't overlevel I might add. But still. Without Mantyke the run would have been impossible.

I think a VERY high level will be needed for the majority of the team to win.

Mime Jr. is also decent, with (relatively) great Sp.Atk and Sp.Def.
..and 20 HP, meaning he's going to be the glass cannon of the team if anything.
@@ZorotheGallade I've never used any of the Mime lines but having used Riolu/Lucario I can assure you he will pull something off.
I've used him in my Platinum, BW2, X&Y, and it has helped! He will do great even as a baby because of the less weaknesses as a good assistance, to be fair, it depends on luck, too...

Sketch is a very broken move, with movie tutor you can just have it relearn sketch
@@echo6930 you'd have to spend time getting heart scales for that, and you'd be stuck with low tier moves for a heavy majority of the game, plus you can only learn it naturally every 10 levels so until you get access to the move reminder you'd be stuck with one to three possibly terrible movws

"Pokemon Platinum with one Phione"
Feel like it could be interesting, just for it being likely the only challenging way to incorporate a legendary into one of these runs, with it being the legendary/mythical pokemon with the lowest base stats (not counting gen 7).
Phione might be interesting. While Phione is easily among the weakest legendary/mythic, it does have 80 everything. Most people know pokemon don't really need balanced stats since they generally have one specific job on a team, so it's point total of 480 being divided to make it's stats even is actually pretty bad. Mew suffers from the same problem, but with at least 100 in everything and access to almost every move in the game. Phione is a bit weaker and without the diversity, with every single attacking move Phione learns by level up being just water type. Still, he's worked with plenty of pokemon that had way worse than average stats before and came out on top, so he could probably manage.
If nothing else, Phione can at least learn acid armor and double team, so like in most playthroughs in the series, I assume with enough tries Double Team can snag a victory. Or at least make use of toxic, safeguard and rest spam to slowly kill the opponent. It does learn ice beam and blizzard by tm, so it does at least have an attack against grass types, and if desperate Hidden Power and Return have proven to be viable options before.
I could see some struggle with it at first, but there's no reason that I can think of to why Phione wouldn't be usable enough that he couldn't defeat the champion with it. Still would be nice to see a unique kind of pokemon at least once in the series though.

Rules:
1. no spending money on any items (other then plot required times like buying the guard to get in saffron city or on trip in the Safari Zone to get the Surf & Strength HM but no catching in the Safari) .
2. you only have the free pokeballs at the start and any you find even for catching HM users
3. no pick up ability for unlimited free items (optional for added challenge but you can if it's the only way you can)
i think this Challenge would be better in gen 1 or 2 before the pick up ability was a thing
What about limiting it to pokeballs (as in no ultra balls, just pokeballs) and potions only, but can only use 3 potions per fight max
You couldn't do it in gen 1 cause oak doesn't give you pokeballs so you would have to use firered or leaf green if you want to do it in gen 1.

@Mr. Shiba my challenge was to beat emerald with team of only first route pokemons. To make it harder I used only their first form. So even though I chose Mudkip I never evolved it to Swampert. Plus I did not have a complete team to add on to difficulty.

This video gave me the motivation/inspiration to try my own "Babies only" run in Pokémon Shield.
Ended with two Munchlax(1 physical & 1 special), Budew, Mantyke, Cleffa and Bonsly(mostly for Rock Head+recoil moves)
It wasn't as hard as I expected until Rose and Leon, but I won in the end

Minor correction: The abilities that inflict effects with contact are actually separate from physical or special. There's a defined category of moves that make contact which isn't visible. It's not terribly different from just physical or special, but it makes more sense.
a example is grass knot,its special but its a contact move

What I like about these team challenge is that it's still a lot of grinding, but it's much more interesting to see you really construct your team little by little

@@milonchello1643 You can get a mantyke(somewhat rarely) around lv.30-40 or so along route 223(The path to the elite four) when surfing and in Diamond and Pearl, they are also a 10% spawn in the waters around sunnyshore city, so the odds are actually pretty good compared to some rares. For Platinum they only appear along 223, but still a 10% spawn and already decently leveled when it comes into your party, at least for the pokemon league. So you can get it before them, but it's also coming in so late compared to the others, but still probably wouldn't even need nearly as much grinding as some of the other ones and with teaching it Ice Beam it could have cut down on a lot of trouble anyway, like I talked about in an earlier post.
I appreciate you doing team runs like this one. I know they take a lot longer to make but I like the variety of pokemon and the more strategies you can use.

First gym would be rough and definitely require a brutal grind.
Second would probably be a one shot sweep. Same with Third since he'll be over leveled and have Shadow Ball by then.
Maylene can't even hit him I think and Crasher Wake would probably be relatively easy if he can avoid Crunch.
Cyrus is going to be a pain all throughout the game.
Byron will also be annoying though he should be able to setup Swords Dance or Double Team against Magneton and hopefully sweep.
Candice however I'm pretty sure is literally impossible. Even if he grinds to 100, Snowbama automatically setting up Hail will always beat him.

@@GamerGrovyle There is an item called Safety Googles. It makes you immune to sandstorm and hail damage. If he gets that he can beat Candice.
Alper Keskin safety goggles got introduced in gen 6. If Byron sets up Sandstorm he dies. But he can win against Candices Abomasnow because Shedinja can learn Sunny Day to block Hail and Abomasnow has no moves to hit Shedinja

Be quite easy to do I'd imagine, but I'd love to see a HM only run through of one of the earlier generation games (Gen 1-4), I feel it could be tough at certain points, but very doable.
Alpharad has a Mudkip only Emerald run that's basically an HM only run.
