- If science in Europe remained unaffected after the objections to causality by Hume and Russell, then how did science come to an end in the Islamic world due to Ghazali's objections? This is because, unlike Ghazali, Hume did not issued edicts of heresy against philosophers and scientists, and did not discouraged the public from studying subjects like mathematics, physics, logic, and philosophy, as it could corrupt their faith. Dear sister Uzma, I don’t claim piety but I am pretty serious about Islam. Though I am not a scientist yet but my first two degrees are in biochemistry and biotechnology and now I am pursuing physics and mathematics. But I also have tried my best to learn Arabic, Mantiq and Kalaam. It takes a lot of time and motivation to do these things and get them right. I study in one of the best universities in the world and I see how much my fellow students and myself have to work hard to grasp subjects like Analysis and Algebra. Logic is also not trivial. I have had a healthy interest in history, archaeology etc. This video of yours is in support for people like myself. It takes a lot to do what I am doing. You have to continually convince your family of the importance of this long and arduous journey. You are broken apart and beaten down and you have to get yourself up and keep going.
But sister minimizing the importance of Ghazali and misreading him and making science out to be what is not and putting the religious and scientists against each other is a great disservice to people like myself. You create a culture where you alienate us from both groups of people who we need to survive. I can’t even begin to try to explain to you how deeply flawed your analysis is. You just won’t appreciate it. Not that you can’t, but you have made the conscious choice to not do it. Today I will suffice with an appeal to you to please, for Gods’ sake don’t speak about things that you don’t have the time to sacrifice your life and your mental energy for. I will give you some clues, and if you are sincere you will read up on them. Even with falsification, the scientific method doesn’t achieve certainty. You really have to ponder upon what makes a deductive argument certain and what necessary entailment means. You also have to ponder about the difference between analysis, algebra and statistics from a very foundational perspective to get a sense of the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning. In a course in modern symbolic logic our textbook mentioned that we don’t know much about inductive reasoning. And I don’t study in a poorly ranked university right now. As an honest and responsible investigative journalist you should have approached this issue in a manner where you interview experts on this topic and learn from them. Maybe we could write up a project for a documentary around this issue. Instead of fighting an ego battle with each other we should seek means to understand and seek unity with each other. Ulama mess up. Scientists mess up. Philosophers mess up. Historians mess up. And people pretending to be either one or more of these things always as a rule mess up. Progress comes from not fuelling the flames of conflict. I know that our countries are in ruins and I know that we have serious grievances with many of our own. But finding a scapegoat to slaughter in Ghazali is not going to solve the problems. People who are steeped jn the tradition of Imam Ghazali’s Ash’ari Kalaam and of Sunni Maturidi Kalaam would meticulously study Ibn Sina and Mu’tazili and Shi’i scholars and value their work. I can introduce you to works of such scholars and even try to help network with various scholars, from different countries and with different expertise. Also your idea of scientific laws is a school level conception which has to change if people want to understand the really deep cutting edge modern science. You can’t innovate if you are stuck on a very pedestrian version of science. We have to raise the discourse of our people. Do you see any substantial and useful critique of your videos? Do you see any reputed logician or philosopher of science commenting here? Please sister, don’t fall into the fallacy of confirmation bias.
On the positive side, while I was getting irate seeing you make basic logical mistakes, because I am formally educated and seeking education in things that you are speaking about, I must say my heart melted as I saw the last part of your video. Yes we have really not paid attention to scientific, mathematical and technological advancement and the West is light years ahead of us. But if you know, you would know, that the West is in foundational crisis when it comes to the very basis of science and philosophy. Everyday, we live with people who believe in mass slaughter of people. Our western universities are complicit and fine with the genocide of people. The West is fine with infiltrating your country and destabilizing it. Sufis like Ghazali were a beacon of hope for our intellectual, spiritual and psychological survival. The takfeer problem in your country is due to stubbornness of half baked scientists and academics. You don’t critique things you don’t understand properly. You have atheists who don’t know their hands from their arses when it comes to formal logic. You like Ibn Sina, and you must if you are an educated person, but after having read and understood Ibn Sina you can refute any atheist on the face to the earth. But there is a slight problem… he makes a bit of an oversight. And then you have Ghazali who gives a brilliant response to the problems of Ibn Sina. There is a hierarchy of knowledge. You have to learn the fundamental subjects before you move onto subjects that depend on them. This is true for Quantum Mechanics and this is true for philosophy and theology.
If you choose to study things systematically you will appreciate the fact that you are arguing for materialism and/or physicalism. And materialism does not work. And I think your concept of laws of nature really breaks down when you juggle the various ideas like emergence in physics. I am not sure we talk in terms of laws of nature anymore. People talk about a stochastic model or nature of the universe…. If you ask me it’s just imkaan (not probability but possibility- the two are different - one is a rational judgement - the other is a measure) that they are talking about. Basically scientific method helps us discover the regular associations of contingent phenomenon… Anyways take care sister. All the best.

Great analysis of the situation and diagnosis of the problem. This is the fundamental problem of the so called philosophers that they have entered the issue midway without knowing the details of the issue in an educated/academic way.

Your vlog reminds me of a ghazal from Pashto poet Ghani Khan. The ghazal, although apparently a comical story, talks about deep philosophical matters. He says how he asked about life from a mullah, a khan and a philosopher. The philosopher talked so well organized as if he was creating a ladder 🪜 of argument and putting the rungs of strong premises one by one. You build your case in a similar fashion. It’s not easy to win an argument when you don’t take help from appeal to emotion and through fallacious flippancy. But since your premises are strong and relevant, your argument is valid and it is impossible to refute them by the likes of Raja sahib. In fact such arguments when delivered in the same stone cold fashion, will give opponents shivers. Keep the good work up madam.

Two points I want to make since my background is academic in medieval Islamic anthropology and theology.
Ghazali’s influence on Seljuks was undoubtedly one of the reason why we see this meteoric rise of Sufism within the Muslim societal fabric; therefore, the State patronage that was given to the theologians and philosophers during Abbasid’s Golden period had been taken away and handed to the Sufi adherents.
There were many intellectuals who came post- ghazali, Ibn e tamiyan era like suharwardi, Mulla Sadra, you mentioned Tusi- they all worked and produced knowledge in their own private capacity without any State grant. Those were hard times since Mongols has destroyed the learning infrastructures such as libraries, guilds, parchment making workshops etc. Therefore, main reason was the cessation of State patronage was the main reason of the decline of Muslim intellectual tradition.
Ibn e Tamiyah has become influential now that he has become the patron saint of salafism otherwise he was in jail most of his life because of his views against Sufis and philosophers.

Your translation is not accurate of Al-Munqid.. I have done a paper on this book of Imam Ghazali. He calls batanis ( Ismailis), Materialists ( Dherya) and philosophers Heretic not Kafir - there is a major difference between the two. Heretics goes against the Revealed scriptural truths. Now I have nothing against peripatetic philosophers since I know their reasoning; however, for an Imam or religious teacher, the eternity of the world or God only knowing the essentials and the rationale behind the Day of judgement is actually going against the dogma. Even Ibn e Rushd didn’t want common people to learn about philosophy or logic since only learned ones can actually find it useful.
Iman Ghazali can be unfair to women but he didn’t go against the discipline of maths or philosophy rather he went against the intellectuals using these to go against the main tenets of Faith.
