I've watched this twice now , I found it so sad and haunting. The filming, the narration and the background music were all just right. I think that that bleak murder site will be haunting my dreams.
Thank you so much Lorraine. These stories are haunting in their own right due to the nature of them. The music we implement we think about when editing each video as we have to make the music compliment each story. But saying that, you may have noticed that we are trying to keep all our videos uniform in that the music is pretty much the same now. We do occasionally add something new, such as the little girls voice in this video, but that is just us trying to come up with new ideas and keep things fresh. But the music, it does have to compliment the story in our opinion.
That poor little girl and what she witnessed, really pulls on the heart strings! Dreadful tragedy which could have been avoided if only the dad had spoken to his wife about his jealousy. Another great story from the past, thanks for researching and sharing with your community. ❤
Amazing story and practically on my doorstep. I love learning about local history, including the recent story in Colne. Pity the weather was so bad this weekend as it's quite beautiful scenery when the sun shines. Thank you both for your hard work. It's such a shame you are sometimes unable to locate the grave sites, but these cemeteries are so old. Thank you for trying and for such a good presentation again.
We know Moses wrote to Emma whilst in prison asking that she take care of Katie. We would presume they stayed in Wesley Place, so maybe the other children stayed with Emma too.
Thank you for bringing this story this is such a sad story and that poor little girl what she must have gone through seeing her mother murdered in front of her please bring more story's Very we'll done
Another great video guys...always interesting..look forward to the next...thank you both for such a great job you are doing bringing these untold stories to us..👍Really look forward to all your videos as I know they will be full of history and emotion...
Thanks so much Susan. We appreciate the stories are same in nature - dark, morbid and at times very disturbing. But thats what the channel is about and myself and Vickie uncovering stories that at the time had a massive impact on the communities, but have since been long forgotten.
Another tragic story from our past. So sad that Eliza has no grave marker, forever now lost. And her poor daughter must have carried those horrific memories to her own grave. Moses deserved his fate. Thanks Chris and Vickie for covering this story respectfully.
We knew right away that we werent going to spend too long in Earby Cemetery. The rain had started to get heavier and we just didnt have any ideas whatsoever on where she could be, other than the article saying three mounds were present. But that article was in 2012 so the landscape would have changed.
Thanks for another interesting story Chris and Vicky. This goes to show once again that domestic violence against women goes back so many years. Gender based violence is so sad😢, the same as this case going back so many years. To make it worse for their own little girl of 4 years old had to witness this attack on her mother.😢 Glad that justice was done on Moses Cudworth hope the little girl was placed in a safe environment. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
I wonder what happened to the children? Did the aunt and uncle living with them raise them, perhaps? Tragic story. So sad that the baby girl had to witness it. Great coverage, stay safe and warm Chris and Vickie!! Beautiful scenery!!
We believe the children remained in Wesley Place and stayed with Emma Filon and her husband, James. We could be wrong, but one newspaper report mentioned the young child, Katie, was to stay with her aunt and uncle (Emma and James).
Thank you both for sharing another historical story , you clearly both put a great deal research and detailed descriptions of the characters and where the murder took place. Excellent presentation 😊
well done chris and vickie getting out in the bad weather what a story again we really did enjoy it thank you both so much and we hope you are staying safe up there all the best from trev and christine down south buy the rough seas xxxxx
Thank you Trevor & Christine. Yes was not a great day for filming walking in mud and the rain and I was so cold up the hill, but these are things we do to get these stories out there and told. Hope you are keeping well and keep warm 😊
This is such a sad story. That poor little girl lost her mother at her father's hand right in front of her and then lost her father too. I hope she was able to live a long, happy life somehow. Thank you both!
Very sad case, it seems that the men folk spent a lot of time and money in the ale House, I bet that style could tell a few tales. Thanks Chris and Vicky xxx
We only did that because I'd forgotten to mention all of it when filming. Sometimes, we have to film parts of the story in a backwards kind of way depending on where we can park the car etc. So if this case, we were near the old lane, so began filming the story from a point in which we had already mentioned Wesley Place, which we were going to talk about when we got to Wesley Place. Then, in editing, we put it all together in order. But in this instance, I forgot where we were up to in the story 😅 Ai is good, but it's not something we will use that often when it comes to voiceovers.
I do wonder what made him snap that day. They had been together for many years. I presume there wasn't any history of violence. Sad story 😢 Well presented guys 😊
Nothing else documented about violence until the last good couple of weeks whilst the lodger there, but the lodger had left 3wks prior to the attack, so why then after 19 yrs. Horrific 😢😢
Well Criss and vickie another story from the past which as always well done. we look at these,s story’s where there,s poverty, short of money living condition poor ,that these things seem to happen . then a lodger that is fuel to the fire if you are a jealous man ,but to murder your wife in front of your child. and leave her in the ditch with an injury similar to the one-off June Daveney. It must have been terrifying for the child the man must have been a monster thanks Criss and Vickie
Another very sad tale. If it happened today maybe Moses would've been diagnosed as suffering from mental issues prior to the incident and/or Eliza would've reported his behaviour to the police or social services. Even though there had been an element of appearing outwardly to be a happy couple. I would assume that given the ferocity of the attack that it wasn't the first time there had been some sort of abuse going on. Having said that I'm not saying this definitely wouldn't have happened nowadays. I still hear stories very similar to this occurring much too frequently.
I tried looking for Katie in the 1901 census when she would have been 12 years old. There was a Katie Cudworth living in Whitworth at that time (near where the family had once lived) with what were presumably foster parents. There was no sign of the rest of the family, although by then they possibly had got married and moved away. Hopefully she did keep in contact with her siblings. To lose both her mum and dad and also lose the rest of the family would've been utterly heart breaking for her. 😥
One article does give a clue that may lead us to believe they stayed with their aunt and uncle, Emma and James Filon, in the same house in Wesley Place. Moses, whilst awaiting his fate, wrote a letter asking that Katie to be looked after by Emma.
Moses wrote to Emma whilst awaiting his fate in prison, asking her to take care of Katie. We would presume they stayed in Wesley Place for a while after the murder. But after that, it kind-of goes cold. But you may be on to something with the 1901 census.
Where I live in the 1890s we had a place nick named st Giles another place named after the poor area in London because it too was extremely poor so that area being nick named Whitechapel doesn’t surprise me interesting story so tragic for the little girl and an awful way to die
Another sad story carefully told. Looking at the census record, I think it might possible that the 4 year old's written name is really Catrina, and that what looks like a 'b' is actually a 't' - hence a shortened version that the family used would be Katy or Caty.
Chris and Vicky , You said Moses had Stone to batter his wife , the only reason I think of , why that witness did find out what was going on he did not want be a other victim jealous and drink is a very dangerous and toxic mix , Katie will remember that for rest life if she married it will always back of mind and might Tell her brothers and sister to think twice about it. from Tom
💯 Tom, that is why the other witness never came to her aid is very plausible that he did not want to be his next victim, however if you heard a little girl in fear and crying for help, surely you instinct should be to go and see? I suppose we are all different and haven't been in that situation, but I think the majority would. Thanks for watching and commenting, Tom 😊
And I think in the three weeks ,since the lodger move out Moses had built up a evil mind and Eliza notice the fact , also the residents Earby They where frightened to help, and I know the welfare of Katie should come first and paramount , Moses was like a powder keg asking for the money , Asking Eliza for the money for some pints of beer , when Eliza said no you got pay for Katie shoes ( or Clogs ) to us East Lancashire as my granny used say , from Tom
What a tragic case the poor children were left orphans all because of the brute Moses, no excuse for what he did the little girl must have been traumatised!. Thank you for this story it was well researched and presented as usual. 👏👏👏👏👏👏🎬🎬
This couple together nearly 20 yrs, both working on shillings and with maybe some lodge money coming into the home, yet the home was described by a journalist as dirty, dark, a damp, smelly, "hovel", there is as you rightly point out a contradiction in terms here, but that was journalism at that time, remember no TV, Radio, so I think Journo's were given, lets say room for embellishment or to add a little garnish on their reports by their editors. Great vid, enjoyed it. Cheers.
Hi there guys that's a shocking story about a loving wife of this sumbag to doing that to his wife specialising in front of his little girl that would be with for the rest of her life poor little girl and the of the family Yes that lane was very spooky Only fink a shocking murder To hadn't there I hope they put him to Death and may she R.I.P poor lady .thanks to you Guys for a great story telling guys you are doing that's great story in rain again so be safe guys
Thanks, David, for watching and commenting. Yes, he was an evil scumbag. What type of person inflicts that much injury on a supposed loved one and I front of your own child. Awful. 😢 Have a great week 😊

Do you know what happened to Katie and her siblings? It brings home just how difficult life was for these poor people.
We know Moses wrote to Emma whilst in prison asking that she take care of Katie. We would presume they stayed in Wesley Place, so maybe the other children stayed with Emma too.
such a cold "quiet"place

Thank you so much. This happens even today against women. So very sad.
Thanks for watching Patsy 😊
Enjoyed your video very sad, very dedicated going out in this weather to tell the story well done Chris and Vicky.
Thank you. Yes, I was very cold and wet at the end of filming and walking up that hill in the sodden mud, not great. Thanks for watching Andrew 😊

Thankyou for this episode,so sad ,that poor little girl witnessed that, she must of suffered for the rest of her life 😢
Even though she was barely four years old, we said off camera that it must have scarred her. It was such a brutal attack.
💯 would have scared her for life 😢
Thank you guy's sad but covered gently and with respect🙌 so sad what some can do to others.

Thank you. We did miss you in the premiere. We are good, hope you are too. Have a great week 😊

Loved the new introduction narrative ( from about 1 to 2 minutes in) it really did help set the scene.

There are loads of similar stories to this one, especially more so in the mid-to-late 1800s and early 1900s.
Your spot on there Roy an evil monster!
Brilliant Work Guy.s and Thank you
I wonder what triggered him that day
Such a sad case that destroyed the family forever
Yes, why that day? The Tennant had been left a few weeks too, what triggered it? Been married 19 years and happier by all accounts.
Another very sad tale. If it happened today maybe Moses would've been diagnosed as suffering from mental issues prior to the incident and/or Eliza would've reported his behaviour to the police or social services. Cabrina Cudworth. We cant work out why her parents called her Katie though.
