Donnie Darko is just about him accepting his deth and being happy about it bc he knows what needs to be done. He finds peace and solace in it. I always liked that about the movie.
He learns that things turn out better without him. It may be an allegory for suicide because he’s basically trying to justify his own death which is a process people with suicidal ideation struggle with.
Time is non-linear, and Donnie was capable of deciding that he would rather die than his girlfriend. Him branching back in time caused an anomaly with the jet engine, of the plane that his mother and sister would have been on.

That makes sense why the girl says i felt like i knew him
I saw this movie as a kid, and it sucked.
Hearing about it makes me never wanna watch it again.
