Plenty of iconic singers use soft breathy vocals a lot of the time- Billie Eilish, Norah Jones, Mazzy Star, Mirah, and many others. I think she's understandably nervous about belting the chorus on live television, but I bet she can. She'll find her groove soon, and be able to showcase the unique sensual raspyness of her voice to its highest potential. Stick with it, Maya! You're the coolest.

It is unfair though as their parents will have connections to push them into whatever they might be interested in and they can experiment for as long as they want and have the tools and tutors needed through the expense of their parent's copious income.
Not gonna lie, I was getting Ashlee Simpson vibes at the beginning but when she started singing, I was into it. I love the soft spoken sound, it's not too much and it's definitely not a recycled sound. Definitely giving the rest of her music a listening to.

I listened to the song last night and didn't like it. Music is not designed to be liked by every one. Maybe she has better songs, or indeed, the song sounds better in the studio (although I cannot imagine being different than this), but the washed school look was a little too much and I couldn't make out what she was saying, to be honest.
