I finally found how to beat YouTube compression.

Dear Ghosts,
*Crucial info I forgot to mention, in order to monitor hdr levels you need to change your scopes/waveform settings. Click the 3 dots and change your waveform scale type to HDR (ST.2084/HLG).
I realize that this could cause more problems than the problems it fixes, but I think this video was still worth making as I haven't seen any reasonable solutions to banding and no one has discussed this topic on YT yet. YT compression is soul crushing and as technology changes, this might be the best path moving forward. I hope someone with bigger pockets can further delve into this rabbit hole, perhaps that could be me further down the line, but for now I just wanted to share what I have. Or, you know, just expose properly and film brighter stuff (I guess). Color management settings are not optimal, you can play around with input colorspace as well for your desired footage.
Love,
CleverG

Well. I know what I’m doing today!
You can try Arri log C to rec709 for the video monitoring lut as well especially with your Arri footage
Nice work!
nice one. thx for sharing
I’m definitely getting the deck link soon. Been wanting it for a while now. Also planing to get a hdr/reference display that I can color grade on.
One day I’ll make and not lose money on RUclips…one day….
@@cleverghostchili amen bro, same goals 😂
Your footage is banding because of your noise reduction or the bitrate which you export at. Set the bitrate limit to 80000kbps or upload in ProRes 422 and you won't deal with banding anymore
Nearly all my footage I upload is ProRes 422 HQ, it’s a problem you’ll see on RUclips no matter what even on big production movie trailers or channels. The dune pt2 trailer is one example I can think of
You can export HDR in H.265 by the way.
Yes, though it’s reported from others that they didn’t have as good results, I used dnxhr because it seems to have the highest bitrate which should be best for RUclips compression
@@cleverghostchili I've tried it several times and seems to be good. You can try it out. Spends like some hours to show HDR up though after uploading. I think when AV1 becomes more mainstream older videos will be remastered as RUclips holds on your original video for future proofing.
Yeah one of these test clips 20s still took 12 hours to hdr process. Could be a dealbreaker for full videos
@@cleverghostchili Yeah it takes too much time but when you make it look good it's worth it. Even simple 4K 10bit video if it's long enough it takes hours to be ready as I uploaded a 3+hours one lately but it's ok, just keep it unlisted/private until it's ready.
Did u stress test the lut you're using here into oblivion before ? we've noticed that an insane amount of the LUT Packs available are simply defective af from a technical view.
Do you mean Wesley Knapp video monitoring LUT or the SDR final grade? Because I didn’t use a lut for the hdr version (which would be incompatible for hdr) and was grading mostly blind. The cleverLUTs I use are by no means technically perfect which is why I’ve shared them free as a beta trial for people to test and use for different cameras and situations and am actively looking for feedback. I just realized that perhaps your comment is in response to the image you see on my screen share in davinci resolve, which is what I mean by grading blind as I don’t have an hdr monitor and I don’t think a lut was being used
@@cleverghostchili wasn't meant to roast anyone haha, just landed here by algorithm. Just wanted to share my observations from the depth of a colorist rabbit hole. Will definitely take a look into your luts, always happy to get my hands on unbroken luts :)
