Metroid Prime: Phazon suit cutscene differences (GC vs PAL/Wii)

EDIT: This change was actually made in the PAL version of GC Metroid Prime. Anyway, it's quite hard to find a video of that cutscene played on GC, and the NTSC (no-PAL) GC version of the game is more spread out.
EDIT 2: It was bothering me not being sure when exactly the change was made so I had to check: this change seems to have been made exactly in the JPN and PAL GC versions of the game, no earlier (e.g., 0-01 NTSC game). See: www.metroid2002...
More links about Metroid Prime version differences (Remastered not included [yet!]):

The Wii version of Metroid Prime (Trilogy and New Play Control!) changed the Phazon suit cutscene, and as nobody has ever made a comparison between the original and the new one, I decided to do it myself.

The original looks painful, and maybe that's the point, but I think any pain would be negated by acquiring the Phazon Suit, and it looks painful to watch, too. I think it makes sense for Samus to be having a "seizure" after acquiring the unnatural Phazon suit. Its a whole new level of power coursing through her body that miraculously isn't killing her. The bare minimum she should feel is abit of shaking and pain as her body and suit absorb the new upgrade.
Her pose at the end may be corny, but keep this in mind: this was her first 3D game and the first time we've seen Samus since the SNES days. The entirety of Metroid Prime is focused on making Samus feel powerful and look awesome. Making her shrug off the pain she experienced mere moments ago was simply a way to make her more badass.

Well, Nintendo usually seems to be really confident in the changes they make between versions. In this case, being that Nintendo (seemingly) requested RetroStudios to make this change and others for some of the GC versions of Metroid Prime that came after the first release (that is, at least the PAL GC version, and maybe others), and they kept those changes for the Wii versions, it would have been strange if they did not keep them also for the Remaster.
But yes, everything in the remaster seems to be based on the Wii version: cutscene changes, lore changes, QoL changes, glitch and exploit fixes... They seem to like those changes better than the original GC version (despite a vast amount of players feeling otherwise).
Additionally, the remaster also fixed some glitches that were present in the Wii version (namely Infinite Speed, maybe more; I'm not keeping up with all the changes tbh).

    • @ElB0ludo
      @ElB0ludo  Год назад

It actually was changed in a different Gamecube version, so it technically is not "the cutscene from the Wii version". You all who got to play the 0-00 Gamecube version are lucky. Here in Europe (PAL region), the Gamecube game shipped with the new cutscene. I can't say if it was a change between NTSC and PAL, or if the NTSC 0-01 version of the game already shipped with the new cutscene, though.
Concerning the reasons behind the change, I don't know. A lot of the lore was also changed between the 0-00 and 0-01 versions of the game if I recall correctly. Maybe someoene more knowledgeable than me on Metroid Prime stuff knows a bit more. I don't know if it was a Nintendo thing requesting changes from above, or a Retro Studios decision to re-do some parts of the game.

@@ElB0ludo I knew the lore was changed but didn't realize cutscenes were as well. So in og US version, the Pirates actually made it into impact crater and got wrecked by the Metroid Prime. They are the ones who named the creature Metroid Prime, and it's weapons are a result of absorbing pirate tech. Now in the Pal and all future versions (canon) the Pirates not only didn't breach the impact crater, they never even found a single Chozo artifact. You don't learn it's called the Metroid Prime until you actually face it because the pirate lore terminal has been changed. The funny thing is, both versions of the lore introduce a problem the other version solves. In the US version, it's kinda silly that you need to collect ancient artifacts to open a door that's already been opened. In the Pal version, it's silly that the Pirates claim to be unable to find an artifact when they clearly have two in their possession. Whether or not you prefer the Metroid Prime absorbed pirate tech or Chozo tech is up to you. I slightly prefer the og US version simply because the Pirates are presented as an actual threat rather than incompetent morons, though it does imply that Chozo security is subpar because you only need two artifacts to breach the seal

@@ElB0ludo and it's clear with the Beam Trooper Pirates with their pointy head aesthetic, and the Metroid Prime's Beam Trooper style armor with pointy head aesthetic, that the og US version of the lore is what Retro Studios originally intended when developing the game. That and the Pirates possession of two artifacts in contradiction to the "canon" lore seals the deal. Apparently Nintendo demands that magic seals in their games are the end-all be-all, and lore rewrites are required when this tenant is violated

@@jeffjefferson2853 I mean, the seal thing was probably not the only reason why Nintendo requested a lore change. But yeah, you are right.

Not only did they make an unnecessary change, its not even cropped right in the Wii version with the exception of the Fusion Suit. I was very disappointed by this in 2009, but I got over it... Wii version is still superior

While the first one is admittedly cooler looking at face value, I think the trilogy version is a lot more fitting in context. Unlike all the other power ups in the game, samus doesn't MEAN to get this one. Its a more "unnatural" power up that's suddenly thrust apon her. So the more "what just happened" reaction makes more sense than the GCs more, "I'm over 9000 pew pew mother truckers" response

Maybe it's a kind of censorship since the GameCube (NTSC) versions looks kinda painful for Samus.
Well, I know that makes sense since Samus is basically floating in very radioactive material, but I guess Nintendo didn't like it nonetheless.

ElB0ludo I like the GC version. It was a painful process from radiation but luckily her suit merged and adapted to Phazon giving her advantage.

It was probably for the best. Phazon corrupted the suit making it powerful but dangerous for Samus. She struggled in prime three with the PED suit and it had some way of support, but if it didn’t have that kind of support she could’ve died at any moment imo
