By chance I saw 46229 come through Stafford on the Down Fast going like the clappers. Was that the famous tour that was clocked doing the ton through Warrington?
Not sure. Didn't know about Warrington. But this trip is rumoured to have featured something similar between Penrith and Carlisle - with the figure 96 being mentioned. I remember being unable to keep pace with The Duchess from the almost parallel M6 for more than a few miles!
@@davebenjamin5380 if its the one that Railfilms produced their video for (think it is), the on-train recorders had to be bleeped out when interviewed in the train (!) but lip-reading suggests he says 97mph through Bank Quay. The Crewe-Carlisle leg was driven by a chap on the last day of his career so I can believe some pyrotechnics were achieved on the final leg into Carlisle as well! Seeing it at Stafford by complete chance (age 10) was one of my ‘formative memories’!)
@@limeyfox I, too, recall that being the last day of the driver's career - so what a great way to go out! My roots were in LNER territory so seeing a Duchess in the 60s was more than a rarity - a Derby Works Open Day and a priceless few hours at Preston station when my parents saw the main attraction as Blackpool (1963 I believe)
Indeed, it would be wonderful to see a steam special banked up Shap and Beattock (and I don't mean by a type 47!) but I have a feeling that's just wishful thinking! Sadly modern working practices wouldn't allow the banker to drop off the back and coast back down the incline.
You're probably right...but we still have the chance to witness real steam banking on the Lickey later this year, I believe, with 7029 and 9466. Let's hope it happens...
How beautiful the Duchess of Hamilton is, unstreamlined.
Totally agree Peter!
Enjoyable viewing of two interesting and historic runs, many thanks for the upload.
Thank you for the comment - I'm pleased you enjoyed the video!
Today Dave this loco is back as a streamlined coronation loco and on display
It now looks very impressive - but I miss the sound of this particular Duchess! It was as special in its class as No9 is to the class of A4s....
