Relative to the setting they're in, the Hyaku Shiki, Mk II and Zeta are actually some of the "worst" Gundams, in the sense that their firepower, durability and mobility isn't all that much better than the enemies they're going up against. Unlike Amuro who spent a good chunk of the series in a Gundam that only bazookas or other heavy weapons could penetrate, Kamille (and Char) were always up against opponents who could penetrate them. Even the enemy "mook" suit, the Hizack, has a beam rifle that can take chunks out of them, and is maneuverable enough that even Kamille has difficulty hitting them (he usually fires like a dozen shots for each enemy he actually takes out)
I was weird not seeing Char pilot a Red Mobile Suit Gold was a whole different way to go. The Hyaku Shiki is a great machine too I play as it all the in Dynasty Warriors games. Along with the Akatsuki both great Gold Gundam machines.

Frankly, the idea of an "anti-beam coating" doesn't make much sense even by Gundam standards, so it's just as well they never really bring it up in the actual show.
Well, it was originally supposed be a transformable suit called the Delta Gundam, but it was modified into the Hyaku Shiki because Anaheim Electronics didn't have the technology at the time to produce a transforming mobile suit. And in real life, it was one of the proposed and ultimately rejected designs for the Zeta Gundam, but was kept around anyway as it was a good enough mechanical design to be used in the show.

I wouldn't call it a regular suit. The thing is a descendant of a gundam and it's still considered a good suit in standard against run of the mill in unicorn and narrative. But of course it will never beat the beasts of potential lol.
I wish this suit and the Zeta could return in some way(despite Zeta’s cameo in Narrative), since they are locked up somewhere(correct me if I’m wrong). It’s a shame the Delta Gundam wasn’t finished though because of the frame issues it had. Imagine Char fighting alongside Kamille’s Zeta Gundam and Emma’s Super Gundam as another transformable MS for the Argama.
Tbh, Londo Bell requested for the Zeta since they knew how EFF works but they denied them. They also denied them of Delta Plus. But they realised the mistake when 2md Neo Zeon happened and approved a request if making a new Gundam for Amuro
I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the Delta Gundam in some sort of side story series, or maybe they can sneak it in as a grunt unit in the next Gundam Unicorn episode.

Hyaku shiki wasn't a top tier suit, but the maneuverability is A-ranked. I mean, no one killed Char during Grypts war. The suit is meant to create distractions and clean up (with the hyper mega cannon on grunts), Char played a role within the team. AEUG has Z gundam to fight the aces and new MS's.
