      @@Rory695 in a FWD you're better off using the throttle in this situation, even in RWD cars you're often using a little bit of throttle to neutralize the rear of the car as well as forcing it to bite in a little bit more.
      FWD is much more seemingly violent going into a corner like this though, you want to lift and get you're braking done a bit earlier then normal and then get into the throttle to try and keep the car balanced before the weight balance of the car shifts again mid corner, it's a bit of black magic honestly, also way easier to learn IRL 'cause in a sim for whatever reason (at least in my opinion) you're needing to make up a lot of info with your eyes that you'd be feeling through G-force IRL.
      you have to overcome much more than a mental hurdle to overcome, you're also relearning how to drive after how ever many years, front wheel drive racing is definitely a weird one to try and master, managing the load and heat that comes from having one set of tires doing both steering and acceleration is tricky af to manage, get into a few situations like this during a race and your tires will be ruined, adds a pretty exciting dynamic to viewing the race though, some people are bad fast but awful at managing their car and pace, interesting to think that FWD was at one time the pinnacle of motorsport tech!
      imo it learning to race a FWD car is one of the most difficult things to do, nothing about it feels natural to learn.

      That is a key tactic for FWD in the dirt. I did a few seasons of SCCA rallycross and the first time I drove the car on an actual tarmac track event, it was remarkable how much of that developed weight transfer feel translated right over. It's very easy to saturate steering angle input and then screw yourself on weight transfer when you are suddenly quite a few degrees too turned in when your grip comes back. It's like a high side on a motorcycle except backwards. The trick is smooth weight transfer and to never steer too much more than your tires and weight distribution can support or else you have to very quickly unwind the extra steering angle and know exactly when to slow down steering input a lot to be able to then smoothly control the skid when the slip angles get back into the ballpark and regain effectiveness lest you overcorrect. The forward CG just makes that whole mechanism much more abrupt, but the advantage on FWD of being able to throttle out if you can keep your wits about you not only helps reduce rotation by pulling the front end back on track, but you can also use it to soften that grip transition in the front end as the tires want to dig in and flip you around, making corrective steering input behave a bit more linearly.

      What are you talking about? Where do you see a 'nice save'? That was awful!
      Instead of hitting the throttle right the moment the rear axle began to slide, this dude started to counter-steer-something you must never do with a front wheel drive car, unless you want to kill yourself or/and rack the car. More than that, he counter-steered and discelerated simultaneously which really can be fatal.
      It's basic knowledge for driving a FWD car at all, when driving on track this knowledge becomes crucial.
      Maybe you're right and it IS a nice save, cause some angels got involved and saved this "I'm my mom's racer" dude.
      I would say the guy has balls to upload such an embarrassing video about himself.

  • @aleksandrnestrato
    @aleksandrnestrato Год назад +4

    To those who'll read this. NEVER do that correction movement with the steering wheel on a FWD car! That counter-steer is only for the RWD cars. In a FWD car that counter-steer can cause a sudden whip-like second order oversteer or so called pendulum oversteer-that one you will never correct, it is twice the force, twice the angle and twice the speed than the initial one you were trying to correct. Remember, any front engine front wheel drive car has more weight on the front axle than on the rear axle. If you discelerate, let alone brake, you transfer even more weight to the front wheels taking that weight from your rear wheels. Thus you have even more grip on the front and even less grip on the rear. If you discelerate or brake make sure you do not turn!
    If a lift-off oversteer does happen in a FWD car, back off the steering wheel as much as you can (ideally straighten the front wheels) and hit the throttle into the floor. The front wheels will kill the swing-will de-load themselves and maybe will start spinning (thus you won't gain speed), will load the rear wheels helping them to grip.

      This is a really important comment. I snap oversteered on a highway entry ramp and mistakenly corrected with a typical countersteer movement (more or less equal steering wheel movement in the opposite direction of turn) and the car SNAPPED ALL THE WAY to the other side. I then (at this point basically shitting myself) didn't know what else to do but to countersteer again the opposite direction (luckily I had the reaction time to do this, because that sudden snap in the opposite direction caught me off guard) Somehow, and maybe because the car had lost enough speed at this point, finally snapped back into place and I kept going straight without crashing. My life honestly flashed before my eyes.

      Id rather say to not do it as much as you would in RWD, it depends on the situation, sometimes the throttle by itself just wont get you far enough and you need to also use the steering, overcorrection is just easier to do with FWD.

    • @aleksandrnestrato
      @aleksandrnestrato 5 месяцев назад

      @@BigToro
      The thing you’re saying is all about dynamic weight distribution of a vehicle at speed when cornering.
      Thus, in order to save the FWD car from snap oversteer you must de-load the front axle and load the rear axle to precisely such an amount that will extinguish the lateral movement of the rear wheels.
      Depending on speed, corner radius your vehicle is doing in the moment, weight distribution in the moment, road conditions, weather conditions, tires conditions… the list and the extent of the actions required will vary.
      So, yes, it may seem you’re doing something reminding a RWD car save, but the logic behind your actions is TOTALLY different.

The trick is in how to manage it, point the fronts to where you want to go and stay in it. The second you panic and get off the go button to press the stop button is the same second you're facing the opposite direction.

    I think your line had a lot to do with it. Hugging the left side of the track when there was a kink on the entry for the next corner forced you into a quick direction change when the rear wheels were light under braking. Stiffer suspension would have probably prevented this, you can hear the rear tyres skipping when the nose pitches. Saved the Alfa though which is what matters

    Looked more like an understeer. Since you were sliding out wards. Can't really tell but it looks like you don't have ABS and you turned the wheel under heavy braking. Front tires got overworked

      No very poor reaction, he panicked for nothing, he could've juste applied some throttle with some wheel adjustment and keep on "drifting" with minimum speed loss.

    Got into the same kind of situation with a field car on a dirt track going 80kmh, lifted off and the rear got out wide and then i floored it which prevented the car from going into the 1 meter ditch next to the road potentially making the car roll over killing me :D

    I'd like to make an observation. You're not driving it like a FWD. However, it IS an Alfa so you could be forgiven.

    Odd, Alfa's usually try to kill innocent pedestrians first, then the driver.

    clutching in and braking in a turn will cause the weight to be distributed to the front, making the car lose rear grip. easy fix is to accelerate in a lower gear out of the sideslip

    Had such a moment on my passat b4, luckily, i saved it and learned how to correct it, also how i accidentally bought a shitty mk3 tdi, front heavy, bad rear tires, slightest touch of brakes, and there comes the back end and 180 into a ditch, at something like 20-30kmh, whipped the rear like nothing i ever seen or witnessed

  • @ZachTheOne

    He broke too hard and took the weight off the rear tires, needs better shocks or stiffer springs.

    Late braking on corner with disbalance weight common result. The driver was lucky the track was wide and had enough skills to correct it before spinning.
