Update: Still a newbie with mechanics so my original diagnosis wasn’t accurate. After pulling it out and opening it up at home we find that the chain broke, luckily sprockets intact (more than I can say for the skis and footplates we ripped through). Should be an easy fix we’ll be back out soon.
Did the chain bunch up on the bottom sprocket basically locking the drivers and the track like you had the brake lock on ? Or did the track still spin freely?
Always a good idea to have snowmobile mechanic whiz kid on the hills with you he would have saw that secondary spinning sled not moving and be like yup your chain broke. Most likely to much slack in the chain and the constant backshift and fast acceleration and the chain said nope I'm done lol
I was laughing the whole time everyone was trying to get that sled out. It isn't easy for sure, but having the right rope would have only made a small difference. I have the right rope, but sleds aren't built with as much steel as an four wheeler. I was getting entertained watching you make all the mistakes that I had did. I do wonder if pulling the sled out backwards would have been better.
Glad you liked it haha! We thought about trying to flip the sled around and load the track on the back of one of ours but the main issue was just the deep fresh snow made it way harder to get out. We have been brainstorming some ideas for next time a sled is down since this seems to be a couple times a year occurrence right now haha.
Yeah, usually a good option to lift skid onto back of the other sled but with that much POW the ski would probably have just dug down. But I'm only assuming

Yes, so a couple things. Gonna tow a sled, take off the drive belt. The track should move freely. If not, take off the chaincase cover. If something wrong there like broke chain or gears crunching, you gonna have to remove stuff so things can spin. In short, it should tow pretty easy if the track spins and if it don't, something is stopping it from spinning. Also you can do a reverse piggy back. Turn round broke sled. Put tracks on tunnel of tow sled so only skis on ground and go yo merry way. Sometimes things so jacked that's all you got.
😂 just need a snow mat under skid (or sleds like you figured out) or tow backwards with track in air supported on rear bumper with timbers. Shouldnt be anywhere near that hard to tow even with the drive belt on. It was obvious the drivers were locked up when you had it tipped on its side. You need to find a mechanically inclined friend or three. 🤪
A toboggan or even a large trash bag.And never hook up to the rear bumper. If you would have went through the ski loops then up through the bumper on the sled being towed. Great lmao.
Haha half these boys come from the sticks😂 but we had lots of friends up there using our other sleds to have fun since it was a short trip up and we didn’t want to take them away from that!

All it would have taken is one mechanic to tell you about the broken chain and taking off the chain cover and removing the broken chain and you guys would have been pulled out and back out having fun an hour later. The chain bunching up in the bottom of the case then going free, then bunching is like having someone sitting on the snowmobile pumping the brake lever non-stop. Hopefully the chain case didn't crack at the bottom. Make sure you check for gear oil leak then you get it back together.
Next time you are in this situation, think like a train. If you had hooked two or three sleds together "like a train" you'd have had more success. I've used this method on more than one occasion to get out of back country when a sled goes down. Obviously the track was hung up which was causing all the frustration. It was pretty obvious something was broken when the drive clutch was just spinning. If that's spinning the track should be moving.
This Video pissed me off. Snowboard helmets and a toque is not a safe way to ride my uncle is dead because of no helmet smarten the heck up. No snowmobile helmet no ride stop showing people that it's ok because its not. I dont even test my sled in the yard no helmet I've been riding my whole life get it together.
You’re totally right! Helmets are a must! I normally have a full face helmet but my sled that has the heating cable for it was out for the weekend so the snowboard helmet was the best I had till my main sled was back up and running! Thanks for watching out for us!

@@Tschida2004 chain bunched at the bottom but not spinning the track it was locked up.
When pulling snowmobiles out take the belt off before attempting to pull so the track will move freely.
On this one we took the belt off but it turned out the chain had broken!

And have two guys on the pulling sled will help, hook to one ski and it should trail right behind without a rider...usually

Use 2 or more sleds to tow the broke sled.... And make sure the track is free on the broke sled.
Where do you normally connect the 2 sleds to the broken down one?

You short tie one ski to the back of your sled!
