  • The period videos are back! I tried "The Diva Cup", a reusable menstrual cup, for my period this month, and it was an ~exciting time~. Would you try a menstrual cup?
    I got my menstrual cup from Target, but you can find them in many places!

      @@najodo5209 Oh, 100%. This was in no way a complaint about her current content bc I really enjoy everything she posts. She puts so much thought and effort into all her video concepts and execution, which was something I always liked about these videos. She has this way of presenting information regarding menstruation that feels relaxed, something that is in contrast to the way most people normally talk about it (as a joke or in hushed tones) and really helped normalize open and frank discussions about periods (for me, anyway). It would be super cool if she ever decides to return to the period theme, but it's also fantastic that her channel has been able to evolve and expand over the years. This has been my long winded way of saying same, I guess, lol!

    In public, I tend to empty cup, wipe it out with toilet paper, rinse with a water bottle, dry with toilet paper and pop it back in and just give it a good clean at home. The "boil as necessary" generally means at the beginning/end of your period give it a good boil to kill off any germs.

    wow okay didn’t expect this to be so long:
    came back to this video after buying a diva cup for the first time. i’ve always been an avid tampon user, i can’t stand pads - they just seem so gross to me, so naturally i was pretty excited about this.
    one thing that really made me happy was the fact it can be left in for up to twelve hours. i was always so bad at taking tampons out on time (never left them in for more than eight hours though, don’t worry haha).
    the first time i tried the diva cup was a DISASTER. i didn’t know how to insert it properly, and after 40 minutes, when it eventually got in, i didnt push it far enough and when i walked i could feel it rotate. i was in so much pain and was ready to never touch a diva cup again.
    taking it out was arguably worse than putting it in. i was in so. much. pain. i eventually got it out after far, far too long, emptied & rinsed it, then turned to youtube for a better method.
    i came across one method that said to fold one side into the cup so it makes some sort of triangular shape, then insert - and that has been the best method ever!!! so easy! then, run your finger around the outside to make sure it’s all open and suctioned.
    to take it out, as funny as it sounds, you should start by pushing with your muscles like you’re gonna poop. you’ll start to feel the cup make its way out. once it’s out enough that you can feel all of the ring-things on the base of the cup, hold it in place as best you can while you run a finger up to break the seal.
    once you’ve broken the seal, keep your finger there, continue to push it out while guiding it with your finger.
    that has been the most painless and clean method for me, i hope it helps. sorry to be so... in depth ahah.

It did have a correlation to a physical problem but I didn't find that out for a year after the "Tass-Away" went out of business. I loved it! For the first time I could leave it in for as much as 6 hours without leakage on my heaviest days. Mine created a seal that prevented any leakage. I never had a problem with it. I can't figure out why it went away for 50 years. I'm glad to see it back.

    Hi!! So some tips from a cup veteran:
    1. Do NOT pull the cup out by the stem. The stem is there so you can gently rock it back and fourth to get it to a point where you can pinch the sides to break the seal. You have to keep it pinched the entire time you pull it out.
    2. If the diva cup is a little too out of reach, there are hundreds of other brands you can try! Every vagina is different so your first cup probably won’t be your glass slipper.
    3. When you boil, place it inside of a whisk so it doesn’t rest on the bottom of the pot, it’ll keep it from burning 🔥
    4. You can wipe the cup with toilet paper in public stalls and put it back in as long as your hands are clean and you wash it as soon as you can 🚰
    & last but not least, the first fold the box was showing you is the punch down fold, when done correctly it’s 100x easier to put in rather than the c-fold. Happy cupping!!! 💓

      I've always been curious to try the MeLuna cup, has anyone tried it and loved it?
      I actually do some kind of "7" fold with my cup. This one with the punch down fold are my favourites.
      If anyone is curious to know more about menstrual cups, check out the youtube channel Precious Stars Pads. The girl reviews so many different types of menstrual cups, it's really cool and she's the one who actually convinced me to get one. Been using the cup for about 4 years now and I love it! (Even though I still get surprised by that little punch in the gut you get when it pops open haha)

    actual diva cup user rewatching- don't just yank it out by the stem! you need to press it in a little to break the suction- makes it much easier to pull out without the damn thing trying to french your cervix (and schlurping itself back in if you loose the grip). the little stem guy doesn't really serve a purpose, it's just a comfort thing to be able to feel it. personally i trimmed my stem down a lot bc it gets pokey lol

But I am also very proud of the women who were kind and took time to explain that women have a vaginal canal and a urethra. And to all the girls, never be embarrassed or ashamed of your menses. Be proud and get informed.

    It takes time to truly master the art of using menstrual cups. I LOVE my menstrual cup and would never go back to using tampons. Here are some tips and tricks:
    - there are so many different brands of varying price points, sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. Don’t get bummed if the first one you get isn’t right for you. Put a cup in it has a very good comparison chart comparing all of the cups they’ve tried.
    - there so so many more golds that depicted here. I had a Diva cup for a year until I was able to actually use it and it wasn’t until I discovered the 7 fold that I was able use it
    - if you would for some reason need to change it in public, bring a water bottle with you to rinse it off in the stall
    - be careful using the toilet while wearing the cup, it shouldn’t come out but you would rather be safe than sorry
    - don’t be turned off by the price, menstrual cups can last over 5 years so imagine never walking into a store every again needing to buy over priced tampons. This is a one time purchase that will save you so much in the future.
    - it easiest for me to insert it in the shower. Squatting or putting a foot up on something is the easiest
    - run your finger around the cup after insertion to really be sure the cup has completely unfolded itself
    - for removing the cup, its best to pinch the base of the cup, not the stem. It’s also helpful to push and bear down so cup comes out more naturally
    Hopefully this was helpful to anyone who read this entire comment. I love never worrying about leaks, being able to sleep with no underwear, only having to change it 2 times a day, saving immense amounts of money, helping out the environment, it’s vegan and cruelty free, comfortable and healthier for you! Please try these out!

      Excellent points! The 7 fold is life! There's a ton of good info on the web about folds and brands. I get very paranoid about my hands being not 100% clean and I get scared I will drop the cup because it has happened in my own bathroom when I wanted to empty it and I REALLY wouldn’t want to cause that scene at work 😭 also I just start leaking after 2 hours so idk if there is a cup big enough to catch my flow and that would fit in & not be uncomfortable 😬

But tampons gave me thrush, pads made me feel squishy and dirty,& the bin full of pads at the end of the week made me think about the environment! Day one was great but day 2 can't seem to get it to seal today so I'm practicing and sticking with it. I'm amazed at my body and how it just scoots on up there lol!! And also surprised how much I bled I never thought it was that much! Sorry TMI lol. I'd tell evryone to please try it!! I'd just like to add some tips/info here:
    1. If it pops up/fully expands after you insert it, you probably have good suction. Trust me, it's a good thing if you don't have to fiddle with it a lot! It's always good to rotate it to get it extra secure though.
    2. I like to cut the stem on mine, sometimes it can stick out a little too much and often when you "feel" the diva cup, you're actually just feeling the stem. Others express discomfort in this area and it's worth trying.
    3. You don't have to walk to the sink to rinse it out every time. This would be super awkward/impractical to do in a public restroom, and if you're having a heavy day no one wants to do that lol. Just remove it as usual, pour the blood into the toilet, wipe the cup with toilet paper, and reinsert. It's no different than a tampon, and is actually (in my experience) a lot less messy than a tampon.
    I guess there's a little bit of a learning curve for everyone, but after you get used to it (which imo happens really fast!) it doesn't take more than a couple seconds to insert/remove. I'd also like to add that I experience significantly less cramping with a cup! They're really so great, they're a lot more comfortable and clean than tampons/pads.

    Hopefully you read this! The bubble feeling is because there are two air holes in the top of the cup! That's designed to let air out of the cup as it fills, because the blood slowly going in the cup is obviously going to push air out the way! So the holes let out the spare air😂which is what calls a "bubbling" sensation!

    • @SamanthDarling
      @SamanthDarling 7 лет назад +3

      Omg this makes me feel better!! The bubbling and air feeling are the only part of the cup that I really have an issue with. I'm scared of getting an embolism (you know that thing where air gets trapped in you and you die)!! So it has a way to leave so that won't happen!

      there is zero way you can get an air embolism from a diva cup or form a tampon for that matter. Air gets in your vagina all the time from all manner of activities (sex and masturbation included). Its when air is in a vein that it is deadly.

I was just searching the Internet for how long the diva cup lasts until you need to replace it, but I didn’t get a set number. It’s more like when the cup has something weird on it like sticky or filmy spots or is super discolored (????). So I was wondering with your experience how often have you found it needs to be replaced? I’m super curious about this now and kind of concerned about when I should buy a new one... @x if you have a heavy flow you'll just need to empty the cup more often. It might not fit for the night... but at least you'd cut your tampon usage during the day! There's also different sizes, however it is recommended to start with a small or medium size to get used to it... Maybe start with a medium size that you start using around the end of your period to see if you're comfortable with it (not everybody is). The cup pays for itself really quick, so even if you end up buying another, bigger one later, you should be good money-wise. Plus a smaller could be more comfortable on days with smaller flow. I'd also recommend wearing pads or period panties, especially at first, and especially with heavy flow!

    • @Loveit4everandever
      @Loveit4everandever 5 лет назад +20

      @xFrom what I've read the sizes have nothing to do with flow, but with your muscles. they recommend a S for younger girls (virgins), a M for most people and a L for after giving birth. I also think there are different strenghts to it (maybe in just a few brands) being the stronger ones for more active people (such as athletes). We all think we have heavy flows, but using the cup made me realize that for most of us it actually isn't so, it's just pads and tampons aren't effective.

Since I started using the cup, they aren't nearly as bad. Plus that benefit of not having to carry a hoard of products in my purse! Just the one or two for those who might need one while I'm out and about. Also don't have to worry about the surprise visit, because I just start using it a few days before I'm supposed to get my period (according to what my tracking app says at least). Best. Thing. Ever!

    As as former tampon girl, I couldn’t be prouder of Saf for trying the Diva Cup. I will say that anyone making the switch should consider that it usually takes ~3 cycles to fully master it. Best product I've tried, including a few cups, Thinx, tampons, etc. I would also say that you don't need to WASH wash it between emptying it out during your flow, just once a day or so. honestly relatable. all these comments are saying if it hurts then you're doing it wrong, but for me that wasn't the case. tampons hurt a lot and i can't wear them. one time i tried to put one in after multiple tries, finally got it in correctly, stood up and immediately cried my eyes out and fell down because of the sharp pain. some of us literally can't insert them. i have to use pads. all the same people praising tampons say that pads are like diapers, but in reality if you have the correct pad for your body shape/flow it shouldn't be visible and you shouldn't be able to feel it.

      TAMPONS MAKE ME CRAMP LIKE A CRAMPING CRAMPER WHO CRAMPS!!! I can insert them without pain (though I can always feel them in there), but the freaking CRAMPS. The only going explanation I've ever found is some reproductive systems are laid out in a way that if you use a tampon it will sit against the cervix and cause pain. Other people's vaginal canals are slightly different lengths and shapes, so that's why it hurts in some and not in others.

      Simran Possibly if you left it in for a bit too long. Pinching the tip doesn't pinch the entire cup so it shouldn't disturb the liquid inside. You really have to leave the cup in for a long time (like 18-24 hours) on a heavy cycle to have it get really full.

    I started using a period cup about a year ago, and I haven't used a single tampon since. I leak so much less using one of these than regular period products. This is coming from someone who can bleed through a super tampon, a night pad, granny panties, and jeans within an hour... My period lasts about a week and a half and this product is my saving grace. The most I do now is use a panty liner and change it every few hours with no hassle. I recommend a period cup to every tampon lover I meet.
    I've also saved so much money with this because I don't have to buy tampons anymore. 10 out of 10 product. It will change your life.

    Taking out the cup should be a little better if you "break the seal" before you pull it out. Kind of like the way you bend it when you put it in, you use your finger and push in on one side to break that suction, that way it's not as bad of a "vacuum" when changing and cleaning it. Also, some people I know, will take flushable wipes (or any kind of wet wipes) with you when you're out in public so you wouldn't need to worry with going to the sink, just take out, dump out in toilet, wash with baby wipe, and re-insert.

    • @user-tk8xr2os2w
      @user-tk8xr2os2w 7 лет назад +21

      I have a cup, wipes work great but don't flush them, even if they say "flushable," there's a whole thing about how they clog up city sewars by creating fatbergs (look it at your own risk). Also most cups are made of medical grade silicone so they don't have any pores in the material large enough for bacteria or anything to grow on them so other than a rinse it really doesn't need much cleaning or even soap (the box says use a mild soap so they can sell more of their divawash), I wash mine a couple times through each cycle but you do not need to wash every time you empty it.

    • @Reyllanigirl
      @Reyllanigirl 7 лет назад +33

      Reva Everetts Baby wipes are technically "flushable" but they clog pipes a lot and cause a lot of damage to sewage systems so it's better not to flush them! Just throw them away and try to find decomposable ones!

  • @destineewebb3137
    @destineewebb3137 7 лет назад +91

    I know this is a bit late but I've been using the Diva cup for 6 months and I found that the rotation is really important for sealing the suction. You should be able to grab more than just the stem when trying to rotate it. I never feel mine after I've rotated it, but obviously, everyone's body is different. And taking it out, for me at least, requires really feeling around up there and breaking the seal with my finger. You should be able to feel and hear the air releasing. Physically pushing with my kegel muscles seems to help with both inserting and removing the cup too.

Honestly, even now, that basically everyone in my class has gotten their period and are all experiencing puberty, I am still not comfortable talking about it, at least not directly. The diva cup also won’t give you toxic shock syndrome like tampons can which is amazing! I was seeing a pelvic floor therapist for a while and she suggested the diva cup to me. You have to do kegel exercises to push it down before you pull it out, it helps lower it to grab it easier. But having to practice kegels really strengthens the pelvic floor which can prevent a lot of pain associated with periods, sex and pregnancy. Would be awesome for you to do a video where you see a pelvic floor therapist because there is so much to learn! Love your videos, Saf! Keep on keeping on!!!

For me, the first two times it was messy and hard, and it all made me reconsider using it in the first place. However, the more I used it, the more I loved it! putting it on and taking it off gets easier and easier until it only takes you seconds. Once you get the hang of it, you can't feel it at all inside you, as well. All I can say to someone considering using it is to not give up, even when it seems hard. I swear it is worth it.

      @@EricaQuiroz heya! I'm a long time user of the cup and I love it! I found it difficult the first couple of months, so don't give up! A couple of tips I found helpful, whichever way you fold it choose the one that it seems to "pop open" easiest from once you insert it. Trying different ways of folding it helps, and I've also had friends say that some times using a little water based lubricant on the interior of the cup can help with this, because it reduces friction and the cup sort of 'catching' on itself, especially as you're learning to use it. This second one is kinda weird but it helps, once it "pops open" you can kinda "burp" the seal if you squish it with your finger once it's in, and it seems to help seal it better to the inner walls and there's a little bit of a suction feeling (not painful) this can also help you kinda feel it "pop open". Also make sure you've purchased the right size for you, there are two sizes and ignore what they say about age/having given birth=sizing, and go with the one that fits and feels right for you. Hope this helps, and if you don't like the Diva but you like cups, there are other cups available on the market that you can try, even disposable ones.

    I have very irregular periods, but I love that I can just pop my cup in when I feel like I might be starting and not waste anything if it doesn't come. Additionally, I am in the military and that requires me to be away from home and away from places where I can pick up products as needed. It's a great space saver as far as packing and helps keeps things much fresher for longer. Since I started with a menstrual cup , I haven't looked back. I just got my first menstrual cup called a Saalt cup today, and so far, I'm impressed. Cramps hurt less, it sits comfortably, and holds well with my heavy flow. I do agree that taking a cup out is a bit of a situation. I had to squish mine on the side with my finger and drag it out, so it spilled everywhere. Lol. Overall though, I'm never going back to tampons unless I have to. It's so nice to feel more relaxed and not worry about just having the tampon string stain your panties or feel like you have to change it every time you pee.
    *Edit: Now that it's been all day, and I've done a little extra research, I've found that if you push like you're trying to poop, it helps to get the bottom farther towards your vaginal opening and makes it soooooooo much easier to get out. You may have to do that a few times as you wiggle the cup down if you have a high cervix, or bendy vag like me. Just remember, try to relax and just be calm so your muscles don't squeeze in and fight you.

      Ramona Sz Honestly even “flushable” wipes aren’t flushable. They’re still harmful to aquatic life. I wouldn’t* recommend using wipes just because these cups are primarily designed to be more eco friendly and that kinda defeats the purpose.

      Guys, she didn't actually say she throws the wipes in the toilet. She may have just meant she dumps the contents of the cup in the toilet and then uses the wipes to clean it out in the stall without having to take it to the sink.

      Literally tho! I first started using it roughly 3 years ago and the first week was so confusing...I put it in wonky and it leaked everywhere so I went back to tampons for the rest of that period. But I kept at the diva cup bc I own a pet-sitting business. Dogs love to tear up tampons, and I don't want any pet emergencies on my hands. So I made the cup work and it's so amazing. I don't know why I hadn't chosen this route sooner!

    TIPS:
    --It's easier to put in wet! You don't need a special lube or anything, but a quick rinse if you haven't already rinsed it is very helpful.
    --Conversely, it's easier to take out dry. By this I mean make sure your hands and the little nub for grabbing are as dry as possible. I'll often use a single square of toilet paper to aid in the grabbing of the lil nub. If the nub is uncomfy for you after a trial period, just cut it off and know it'll be a little harder to remove going forward.
    --While you can absolutely wear it for 12 hours, it will also start to leak when it's full, no matter what hour that is. If you have a very heavy flow, take it out and dump it. It's a cup not a plug so it can runneth over. Wear a liner/dark undies if you have a heavy flow.
    --When you pour it into the toilet try to pour it into the water, the blood on the side of the bowl doesn't always flush easily. But also, pour slowly so it doesn't splash.
    --If you ever drop it in the toilet or tbh anywhere, please boil it.
    --If you ever have to change it in public, strategize: If there are no single stall restroom available, it's ok. Take it out and wipe it off, wrap it in TP, put a lil TP in your undies and go rinse it off. Go back in the stall and put it back in. Yes, It'll be inconvenient and take longer than a tampon. It's worth it.

      Sarah Brugman all this is great advice! I want to add that keeping a Ph balanced cleaner (Summers Eve - unscented) on hand is a good idea. Boiling works but I think of it as more of the ‘oops’ option like Clair said.
      And skip the rotation step if you get a cup.
      If you dont feel the ‘pop’ then just run a finger around the outside of the cup and apply gentle pressure until you feel the ‘pop’ - or until you feel the cup is unfurled. It feels a little odd at first but it gets really unnoticeable fast. And I also suggest inserting/removing the first few times while relaxed and in the shower.

    I love my Diva cup. I just got it last month but I had zero problems with it. The rotation makes it so the cup is fully expanded and "suctioned", I guess but the instruction manual also says that you can just use a finger to push aside the inner tissue to ensure that there's room for it to fully expand and then wiggle it a bit and it does the same thing.
    There's less odour, less waste, and a lower chance of toxic shock syndrome. Plus, the long wearing time is great! And it saves money in the long run too!

    • @tatyanayasko4173
      @tatyanayasko4173 7 лет назад +9

      Yes, you should be able to. Here's a link to their website, explaining their different "sizes": divacup.com/how-it-works/sizing/
      Also, there's a section on this page divacup.com/moms/ about the hymen/virginity and the use of the diva cup.
      One thing that you might want to keep in mind is that insertion may be a little bit more difficult, until your body adjusts to the cup but the vaginal muscles are designed to stretch and then return back to normal so it won't "stretch you out" or anything.

    • @Peach-oy2tg
      @Peach-oy2tg 7 лет назад +8

      you should still be able to. relaxing your vaginal muscles has nothing to do with being a virgin or not. the only thing is you might be scared/nervous as a lot of people are (even if they're not virgins) and that might tense up your muscles & make it more difficult. Relax, understand your body, and use a smaller cup. There's different brands.

    • @godofants
      @godofants 7 лет назад

      I'm that one 'horror' story. I'm 16 and also still a virgin. I've used tampons for about a year now and it's always been comfortable besides for a slight mishap my first time using it. When I went to put the diva cup it it was extremely painful. It took me about 30 min the first time with terrible pain the whole time and then once I finally got it in (after coconut oil lube) I felt in no longer. I was in for a whammy when I attempted to remove it. It was pulling but not to painful until it was almost out and I thought I was going to pass out. The pain was so severe I had to take a break and try again. The pain hasn't left anytime I remove it and I just have to pull as hard as I can as quickly as I can. I love it when it's in but insertion and removal are horrible.

    The one thing I love about a menstrual cup is that its reusable. I mean, imagine if every girl on earth used a menstrual cup instead of pads or tampons, the rate of trash would dramatically decrease. Well, I wouldn't know exactly if that would happen but it would definitely help the environment a lot and make the world a better place to live in. Now, I can't use a menstrual cup yet because my mother doesn't approve of this (not even a tampon) but I would absolutely try a cup once I get a job and hope that it would become my regular thing

    • @TheChrizine
      @TheChrizine 7 лет назад +30

      I absolutely agree that the less waste is a big plus! Why does your mother not approve? If you want to use reusable menstrual products because of the environment, maybe look into cloth pads, she might be more accepting of those? In any case, I would highly recommend the youtube channel precious star pads to you, she gives a lot of advice and information both on cups and cloth pads. Maybe you will even find a video that you can show to your mother to help reduce whatever worries she has about using a cup.

    • @samanthafriginal3705
      @samanthafriginal3705 7 лет назад +27

      She doesn't approve of it because she believes that it would de-virginize me. She freaked out when i told her that I was going to try using a tampon. I had to try it in secret. Anyway, I couldn't get a hold of a menstrual cup even if I wanted to because there aren't any in my country and if there was one it was super expensive. i'm going to have to wait until I have a steady income before I start trying out stuff like this. Thank you for the nice feedback :D

    • @TheChrizine
      @TheChrizine 7 лет назад +20

      I see your problem. Precious star pads made a video about this whole virgin thing that I can recommend, but if your mother firmly believes in that it's probably hard to convince her. Maybe cloth pads are really a more realistic option for you for the time being. I've never tried them myself but I've heard that they have quite a few advantages over regular pads and you don't really need to buy them - if you can get hold of some suitable fabrics you could just make them yourself. Maybe your mother will be more open to that and even help you? It's not really something extravagant, it's what people used to use all the time before disposable pads were invented, maybe that might convince her. Good luck - and don't feel too bad if you just end up having to wait for your indepence. So many of us have discovered reusable menstrual products only later in life, you might still be ahead many of us :)

    I love my diva cup! Few tips I learned from using it. 1-trim the stem if you can feel it. I can still feel it even when it's trimmed all the way so I actually turn mine inside out! 2- You have to break the seal on the cup before you try and take it out. Just run ur finger up the side and in between ur vagina and the cup. This makes removal so much easier. 3- I wear my cup with my thinx panties instead of a liner. Eco friendly and more comfy.
    Hope you get the hang of it, it's so liberating!

    To test if it's got good suction, feel around the edge for dips and lightly tug the stem to see if theres any resistance.
    To take it out, pinch the base to break the suction and slowly pull out in the shower/over the toilet.
