    The salt in the alcohol marker solution escapes when it separates from the ethanol. Fungus isn't likely to grow in an alcohol solution. Don't worry.

  • @libbyrust
    @libbyrust 4 года назад +935

    It's actually salination that grows on some markers, not fungus. I've had brand new markers do this, but I wiped them off, and they were fine after that.

      True. You can have it even on new markers. I have the impression that they are even juicier when that "mold" is there. Like they protecting the fluid inside the marker.

    • @libbyrust

      @@annnoyez it's probably the fact that they have more fluid with the salinity in them that causes it. Not entirely sure how it works, though.

    Pro tip (pun intended): when the markers dry out you can still revive them by carefully removing the chisel tip and then pouring a bit of rubbing alcohol. That way you can use it for a while longer before it dries out again. It's worth mentioning that the color will probably be a bit diluted but you can get a bit more use out of it before you throw it away :)

    1) I’m 36 - so the markers make me seem old.
    2) He looks like a Duncan to me.

    I'm older than them and haven't seen this version of Promarker brand, got my first ones in 2008 I think while they were still made by Letraset, they were later bought by Winsor & Newton. In some colors shades did change but ink quality has luckily stayed the same. With few Copics that I tried out and what I have been noticing it in most artworks done by other artists with them is that Copic ink doesn't seem to be all that even but ink that Pro and Brushmarkers have it tends to leave much more solid looking color behind. Back in Letraset days there was also refill inks available for them but not anymore. As well as back in Letraset days their marker paper was literally bleed proof and takes helluva lot color without bleeding through... W&N version of it cannot really live up to the legacy when it comes to marker paper.
    And yes, W&N did redesing them again. :'D They now come as solid color labels in barrels of what I have seen.

    I still have some working felt tip pens which my Mum had in the 70s. Old Berol ones which came with colouring page posters - sort of like the adult colouring craze we have today (not children's pages). There are plenty of tricks to reinvigorating (for want of a better word that's slipped my mind) dried up pens out there which are always worth trying before throwing them away. Often all that has evaporated is the bit that keeps the ink liquid and the pigments are still just fine (as long as the barrels are not see-trough so light can not have affected the pigments).
    So for alcohol markers, just adding some pure alcohol back into the pen, a few drops at a time onto the nib and letting it soak back in, will help sort them out. Most of the "mould" people call the stuff on it is actually just the pigments crystallising as the alcohol evaporates slowly. Technically an alcohol marker should have been pretty sterile as the high percentage of alcohol used within them would have killed most stuff. Also mould and bacteria aren't the same thing anyway and you'll rarely find them existing together since mould tends to have antibacterial properties (penicillin is a mould and kills bacteria). Even if they had gone a bit mouldy, adding fresh pure alcohol back to the markers will kill off pretty much anything that was left on/in the pens, especially after so many years disuse - they'd have run out of stuff to feed on and died out. Plus its mostly just crystals so....
    For water based markers as a kid, fixing them used to involve dipping them in a solution of vinegar and water. They ended up working way better with the vinegar added, even the really cheap ones you get in those big packs as a kid. Plus side with that is the vinegar can help disinfect if there were an issue at all. I used to use that trick on new pens which already seemed slightly dried up and it fixed them all. I can't quite remember the ratio, the mix was provided for me. But it did smell vinegary. lol We just used regular malt vinegar, but I'd recommend a white vinegar since that won't risk any colour alteration from the brownness of the malt. You just dip the tip in for a little bit and then we'd hold them tip up to allow the vinegar water to soak into the pen. If its one where you can remove the ink cartridge bit (often a little plastic tube filled with fibre/foam holding the ink) then its even quicker to do as you can just dip each end in briefly and you can see the water soaking back in. Makes for very juicy pens for a bit!

    • @annnoyez
      @annnoyez 4 года назад

      Vinegar is alcohol based, so you turned your water markers into alcoholmarkers... no wonder they worked better... but yes, that's what I did as kid to. Add some water to my markers and they were good to go. And even when the pigment was almost used up, you had light colours... so I had a bigger colourrange. A bit like with watercolours... so I could combine my new once with my old ones... that was fun.

    • @AlexaFaie
      @AlexaFaie 4 года назад

      @@annnoyez Vinegar is an acid not an alcohol. Specifically acetic acid. It is produced from ethanol or sugars by introducing bacteria so that it ferments further (than in alcohol production) or in a lab with the help of catalysts. So you have not in fact turned them into alcohol markers. But adding the acid does mean that the life of the artwork produced may not be so long - materials for art are always talking about acid free paper and inks for longer preservation. Still, if you're a kid or someone else on a budget who isn't imagining keeping their work forever its not a bad compromise.

    Add alcohol 91%or higher and you can revive the ink left in the marker. I do that with my markers when dry, eventually the pigment does give up. For my copics, I use copic blender solution to rehidrate the markers if they get guppy due to evaporation. 👍❤

    I still have some letraset promarkers that are that second type with the less "goofy" lettering. The type they sold for a while before being bought out by winsor&newton. Only two of the markers has ever dried out and that was because I used the colour for a lot of blending, one was cool aqua and the other a blender which some don't count as a marker.(yes I know winsor&newton has refills but I'm broke AF 😅)I'm still drawing with them today, some are even still juicy like the day I got them since I tend to use cool and neutral colours over warmer colours.

    I had Letraset Tria markers... the branding for the 'three tip' concept. I loved them. They came in Pantone colours, which was amazing... and the reason they cost so much. Wish they were still around. Personally I do not think the W&N are the same.

    I have almost as old markers as you. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't used them since 2011 since I've been more busy at school. I fear that they might be dry. Maybe I'll take them out for a test run after my finals that are next week. I really do want to get back to drawing and art more when I have time

    I saw someone who did a vid similar to this, and apparently it's not mold or anything. It's just the binder in the markers goes bad and separates. It happens a lot with Sharpie's.

    I have those same markers. Like the same branding and everything. Except I only 1 that had the fine-liners. I only have a bullet and chisel nib.

    I bought my Letraset ProMarkers in 2010, only used them for a few paintings, and hadn't touched them since 2011 so I thought they'd be dried out but they're still fine :) I wonder if the still have the same shelf life now when Winsor&Newton makes them?

    I still have a few prismacolor markers from around 1992 or 93 that still work. Not dried out and none of that saline mold or whatever that stuff is either.

    You can put some alcohol in the barrel so they reactivated the dryed up ink.
    You can refill all markers. You put the nib out and put some copic ink in it or an other brand ink for markers... so if you wish you can refill all the alcoholmarkers. Good luck.

    Nope, not younger ^^' Seems like we're more or less of the same vintage :). I was born in 1990 :D I had some of that mouldy stuff on some of my cheaper markers, I just dabbed it off with some rubbing alcohol drenched tissues and they work just as well again. If you spray some of that on the dried up markers or dip them in some, that might help with that, too ;

    Cat bear is another name for a
    Binturong. But honestly it looks like them as well just brown and not black how they naturally are. I do think he looks a little like a red panda :D
    Phillip would be a cute name for him XD

    2006? Then I'm 25 years older than them lol.
    Surprising how many of them were still so alive! (but then I had always experience just with common waterbased markers because alcohol based weren't much available here (not that it would be much better now) so maybe alcohol based markers just stays alive longer).
    I like the finished pciture!
