Yeah I think these other two folks summed it up pretty much. There were some skeptics / haters in the US possibly due to xenophobia And he didn’t bring much pre fight buzz / hype. People didn’t think he had the right star quality they would like to see. And also some people thought he was boring inside the ring as well 🤷♂️ I’m not sure that he was widely despised though. Probably some Tyson / klitschko fan boys were upset when Lewis won. Some of Lewis’s detractors will say that he dodged bowe and fought weak completion Plenty of people like him ok. He just wasn’t for everyone.
Me too and Bruno, even though he wasn't on same level, but it was so sweet when he finally became heavyweight champ. And Joe Calzaghe has never got the recognition he deserves outside the UK. Not many boxers retire undefeated and he fought the best too.
Makes you wonder how this younger Briggs would fare against Joshua, Whyte, Chisora...very quick and powerful and absolutely fantastic chin! Took a very determined and more skilled Lewis to beat him

I remember watching this at the time and at the end of the first it should have definately been called a knockdown as the ropes kept him up, that's one of the very few times he was wobbled in his whole career as his chin was normally excellent I know he got knocked out twice but they were fantastic shots and clean knockouts and have nothing to do with how good of a shot you can take
He would have gotten knocked out or stopped by Holyfield had they fought in Holyfields peak. However, that's how boxing is. When one peaks, one declines!

Bowe also TKOed Biggs earlier in the same year (1991). So Lewis vs Bowe is the only missing fight in pro boxing.

I didn't like the stoppage on a slip/fall. Briggs was gassed but the potential for a haymaker KO by him was still there albeit minimal. And credit for all the times Briggs had already gotten up should have been given by the ref. Briggs was more gassed in his body than his eggs were scrambled. Up to the stoppage, Cappucino seemed to think he was more important than he was in this fight.
