Yeah I think these other two folks summed it up pretty much.
There were some skeptics / haters in the US possibly due to xenophobia
And he didn’t bring much pre fight buzz / hype. People didn’t think he had the right star quality they would like to see. And also some people thought he was boring inside the ring as well 🤷‍♂️
I’m not sure that he was widely despised though. Probably some Tyson / klitschko fan boys were upset when Lewis won.
Some of Lewis’s detractors will say that he dodged bowe and fought weak completion
Plenty of people like him ok. He just wasn’t for everyone.

@@warboots35 Actually Lewis ever beat Bowe, i.e in the 1988 Olympic super heavyweight final. But in pro boxing, the fight could be very different as happened in Bowe vs Jose Luiz Gonzales. The Cuban beat Bowe during amateur career. But when they met in pro match, Bowe destroyed him.
Lewis ever got beaten by Tyrell Biggs at 1984 Olympic, but Lewis TKOed Biggs in pro. Bowe also TKOed Biggs earlier in the same year (1991).
So Lewis vs Bowe is the only missing fight in pro boxing.

Its a totally different game and Lennox beating Bowe in the Olympics wouldn't count for much if they had met later on. And credit for all the times Briggs had already gotten up should have been given by the ref. Briggs was more gassed in his body than his eggs were scrambled. Why no one here appreciate Briggs? He shocked Lewis, you know Lewis was very good fighter, it was his prime ! Briggs shocked Lewis, in fact, something that even Mike Tyson couldn't do to Lewis !

Commentary talking gibberish first three rounds “He’s hurt” “Shaky legs” lol - look at the confidence, just waiting for the openings, Lewis knows even before the bell, that he is going to KO Briggs.

Yea Briggs had those issues with Asthma then and said he severely fatigued after 3 rounds, very good fighter but could've been GREAT if he got that Severe Asthma in control in his early 20's instead of 30's

Tobias you know nothing about boxing. Lewis has said multiple times that Briggs had the fastest hands and punched the hardest of any of his opponents. Lewis might have been confident but he didn’t “know” anything before the bell. And as others have pointed out, Lewis was *clearly* hurt in the first round.

Check out the 3:30 mark, when Lennox is just watching Briggs. No hate, no rush to get at him, just looking. Like a cat at a mouse he knows he has trapped, no way out. People like that are a huge reason guns were made.... what is some little guy at 220 pounds gonna do against someone like Lennox?

Another remarkable display of heart and boxing skill by both men. Although one incident mystifies me, at 18:23: Why didn't the referee give Briggs a standing eight count as Briggs clearly held on to the ropes?

Revitalized and fearless. Can’t figure out if he was playing opossum a bit or simply snapped out of it and finished Briggs. Two very tough hombres
