One of VERY few videos that suggests reading up on U.S./HI history. Not just reading about Hawaiian history but Understanding the history/culture/people & lifestyle. IF you decide on moving, leave the Attitude on the mainland and/or on the plane. For me, locals have NO Tolerance for "I Am Better Than You" Assitude. Just remember...Everyone in Hawaii has managed to get along w/each other, so Why try to Rock the Boat. Go W/The Flow...You'll Live Better & Longer!....Keep it Up, you guys...YT needs more informative videos like yours!

Harry why would they think they are better than people from there?for the first time I went to Hawaii two weeks a go for one week ,I found love everywhere and hard working people. I come from Iran originally and I live in San Francisco and I love living here but if anyone think that they are better than me or lower than me it’s their insecurity. While I was there I got book about Hawaii and I have learned so much about them, also I am curious how do they behave?

@@tabbyborman3262...Coz 85-90% visitors, when they hear..."We're going to Hawaii!"...the logic-center of the brain is left at home. Most vlogs/itineraries have seen, visitors have 1000 things on Honey-Due List, they end up missing the cultural aspect of the trip. All eye see/hear is..."Eye want, Aye want, Eye want!" Kinda like song lyrics..."Eye want it All...& Aye want it NOW!"...Keep Doing What You're Doing"....

Hi Nikki, Thanks for sharing your experience...
My situation is a bid different. I am moving to Oahu from New York City. Just me.. My son is already grown-up and out of the house. I recently accepted a great job at Scholfield
Barracks. I have friends and relatives living in Kapolei - so my transition to Oahu will be easier.
I've planned this move for more than 7 years. I saved enough money, recently sold my house in NY and plan on purchasing a small condo with low maintenance - simple fee. My future plans is to buy land or an old house to demolish and built a tinny smart house. Why I'm moving to Hawaii, family, simple living, culture, nature, weather, vibe, music, island time and how respectful most locals are. I've lived and worked in Hawaii in the past as a military service member

Somehow your channel showed up on my feed. I know you guys are no longer living in Hawaii. I went on vacation early May 2023 and I am totally in-love. I live in Los Angeles so it was easy to adapt to the high prices and at times, the challenging Honolulu and Waikiki’s traffic. We went around the island and enjoyed the beautiful beaches of the east side and North shore. The people of Hawaii are warm and kind. We went to farmer’s markets (something common to do in Los Angeles). I didn’t have time to go to museums but I am going back for longer time in 3 months. I read about the history of Hawaii and also, about the locals. We took reusable bottles, bags, and the like for our trip because we didn’t want to pollute the island (we are big on waste-less and also on recycling). The island life wasn’t as shocking for us because we come from Los Angeles. I will move there in a heart beat… I am currently working on it 😉 thanks for your video.

Don't do it. I'm telling you. Better of just moving to the Carribbean. Highly overpriced. Income from work doesn't justify - and that's if you live on an island with enough jobs to support your life here. If you move to the city - that being on the island of Oahu, everything is crammed. If you feel like spending close to 2k or more to live in a tiny apartment somewhere in the city, then maybe its for you. But don't be surprised as you drive through town and see a whole bunch of tweakers and homeless people lining the streets. And cultural speaking, it's no longer Hawaii anymore. What you will get is fake culture for tourists. No one really cares about Hawaiian culture these days. No one really moves here to experience that. And I think thats a shame. If you doubt my perspective, I can tell you that I was born and raised in Hawaii. I experienced life both in a small town and in the big city. I've know Hawaii for what it truly is. It's not the paradise that people think it to be. I really was it was. It's sad for me to see this place devolve into what it is.

So, I am living with my dad, to help him out. But I am making a plan to move to Honolulu/Waikiki area since visiting in March 2019. I'm in New York and am done with all the "go, go, go", so am doing as much research as I can and saw your video which is very helpful about how to approach things. Thanks for the information. @@adriannajohnson1325 You should go and visit for two weeks first. Meet a few locals and visit a few business in your line of work. It is the same as living in Australia, but as on average you will probably earn about half as much... so it is expensive if you are not careful.
Australia would be a better bet... cleaner, friendlier and higher wages. You'll need a visa and insurance, too, but it is doable and beautiful.

I've been to all 4 main islands and since I'm a Costco member I was mainly shopping from there and Walmart, also gas at Costco was much cheaper that regular gas station..All the islands have Costco and Walmart and from what I saw prices were not that bad comparing to where I live which is DC area.

@emanuil is correct. I just came back from Oahu, last week for my daughter’s college commencement in Honolulu. This has been the 2nd time I visited Oahu and I definitely would like to come back and now thinking of moving there in the next few years. If you are referring to dairy products, it’s definitely more expensive since Hawaii has to import most of these products from the mainland if not overseas. I also live in DC area, where the living cost is relatively higher than most region in mainland. I think the main thing to consider if you want to move and live in Hawaii is that you need to change your lifestyle and to adjust with the locals. But most importantly to respect the culture. A lot of locals dislike the tourists because they brought the ‘mainland attitude’ to the island. I try to avoid Waikiki Beach and explore the North Shore or other areas to really explore and enjoy the island. Mahalo !!

One Walmart, one Costco and two Rosses lol. Lots of businesses have closed from covid.☹️ Its beautiful but we really miss the mainland stuff like theme parks, the movies, Target, just overall things to do besides the beach and hiking. We planned on just the two years to fulfill the teaching license requirements and then covid pretty much added a third year. Maui was our top choice but a Kauai school called first. Please don’t move without seriously looking at your financial situation. Too many go homeless in Hawaii trying to live some fantasy in their minds. Everything is more expensive than you think it’s going to be.
You need to think about being isolated from family and friends. It’s expensive to fly to the mainland, so you will miss birthdays, weddings, funerals, graduations, etc. You will NOT get home as often as you think. You will miss holidays. What will you do when your parents age? Can you survive the guilt of leaving them thousands of miles away? What happens if they get sick or hurt and you can’t afford to get back home to them? Can you make it without a support system on island?
If you’re single, dating is tough. You break up? You’ll see your ex constantly. You’re on an island, so you’re stuck with them. You don’t pass as Hawaiian and you want to date? Good luck. Family is everything there, and the family would rather their child marry the nice Hawaiian down the street over you.
If you have children, know that the school system isn’t great, so you will need money for private schooling.
Jobs there pay less, and cost of living is higher.
Anyone who tells you Hawaii is not racist is a liar. If you can’t pass as Asian or a native Hawaiian, you will deal with racism in some way.
    Traffic is soul crushing.
The homeless situation has exploded. They’re everywhere. Meth is everywhere. Property theft is rampant. It’s not some oasis of tranquility like the tourist propaganda tries portray. People have problems there. People are stressed there. People can barely make rent every month without working multiple jobs.
People need to think before they get on the plane. So many don’t.

Chinese/Japanese are dominant on island due to foreign investment and tourism. A lot of industry caters to them because they have deep pockets. As far as racism goes, if you’re White, you’ll be at the bottom of the totem pole in a lot of local places. It’s due to the bad history of how Hawaii became a state.

I see that you guys also shipped your car from Orlando, we also think about doing that. Do you guys need to change your plate number to Hawaiian plate immediately or you guys still using your Florida plate number? one other question I promise, do you also need to change your driver license to Hawaiian immediately and hows the the process with the DMV?

Aloha Esmee, it's awesome you all are moving to Hawaii. We wish you well on the move. We used Zillow and Apartments.com to find a place to rent on the island. Our place actually came off of Zillow, but places can be somewhat competitive depending on the area. You will have to change your license plate and drivers license quite quickly. Both of these are separate in-person appointments. We had to make appointments about 5 weeks in advance, but that was during the pandemic so it may be faster now. I would make the appointment as soon as you get your place to live. If you move to Oahu, the county is Honolulu so check out their site for more info. (Motor Vehicle Registration www.honolulu.gov/csd/mvinformation.html & Drivers License www.honolulu.gov/csd/dllicense.html) Mahalo and I hope this helps.
