  • The United States Air Force has had a presence in Britain since 1948.
This brief video focusses on the Modern Day USAF in Britain (A - Z format). A shadow of its former self so to speak but it still represents a formidable presence. The Bases featured are the primary Air Force Installations that remain 'Active' today.

In the mid 60s (66-68), I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall, 513 TAW. Live off base in Islem. Great times.

Is RAF Mildenhall still to close in next four years?

Hi. Thank you for your comment. It was originally announced by the US Department of Defense that the Base would close by 2023 (extended to 2027) however, such plans have been shelved (announced in 2020) and Operations at RAF Mildenhall will continue into the future and given the current situation in Eastern Europe, such a decision has been wholly justified. All the best.

@@Chelveston78 Thank you for your reply, and this raises an interesting point.
I was talking to MOD civilians at RAF Lakenheath in 2015 ,and said the USAFE bases would no longer employ MOD , but employ civilian staff directly.
Have you heard anything about this ?
I understand the RAF Squadron Officer at each base is now classed as a RAF reservist, and not a regular.

@@skylongskylong1982 I can't give you a specific answer but on a recent visit to RAF Mildenhall, the MoD Guarding Agency and Police are still present at the Base. In my time, Dependants of US Personnel were employed in various jobs on the Base supplemented by a large volume of Civilian employees but whether those Civilians were/are employed directly by the MoD, I don't know? As for the RAF Liaison Officer being a Reservist, I have heard the same as you. Times have indeed changed. I hope this may have part answered your question? Cheers..
