I was in jail for only 24 days in Malir Jail, but the first three days were terrible. I was just 19 years old, from a middle-class family with strong values, especially about respecting elders. The case against me was completely false, and it was dismissed in court after 24 days. But those 24 days were a nightmare. At the beginning, they had the worst checking procedure. They would strip you of all your clothes in front of everyone and inspect every part of your body. Then they’d send you to the barracks, where there were five times more people than the space could hold. In the barracks, you'd be introduced to the “gangster” (gunda) in charge, who would torture you in various ways to extort money from your family or those who came to visit. At first, I thought this was just how the jail system worked, but I later realized it was all controlled by the jail’s police system, with the money going directly to the jail's SP. I found this out after three days. There was someone in the barrack whose job was to collect and record data on every newcomer. When he was released, they told me-since I was young and educated-to take over his work. I started recording every detail and the amount demanded. For example, Afghans or Pathans had to pay 10,000 PKR; those arrested for illegal border crossing, traveling with fake passports, or entering by sea were charged 50,000 PKR. If you were an Urdu speaker or if they thought your family was wealthy, the amount would be decided by the gangster himself. Below him were four assistants, called *jawabdars*, whose job was to beat people in the barracks and punish them daily. Until you paid the required amount, you couldn’t lie down or sleep; from 5 am to 11 pm, you had to sit up straight, without talking. If you paid, you could sleep, lie down, and rest. If not, you were punished. They even had a Nigerian man, who was twice the size of West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle, working as a *jawabdar*. He would literally pick people up with one hand and beat them so badly they would nearly bleed to death if they resisted. This was under the gangster’s orders. The gangster controlled everything in the barracks: he had a TV, a dry-cleaning service, food from outside restaurants, and even a personal chef, while others were given moldy bread (*roti*) and extremely watery curries and tea. After three days, I was appointed munshi (record-keeper) of the barrack, which was a blessing. Otherwise, the mental toll of all that torture would have broken me. This was my experience, and I’ll never forget it.
This man is absolutely say truth about our jails because i know this all situation in my life since 2016 to 2020 in landi jail and central jail of Karachi
Police k saath saath system bhi kharab hai.... crime sey police ko theek karna zarori hai.. Allah Mehfooz rakhey tamaam begunag logo ko in wehseehiyun sey... Ameen
