  • Got a little break from heating the house before it goes back down to -20 this weekend. This time I am a little more prepared though, I already started my second air heating unit and will try the dripping-method for the faucet that had a frozen pipe last week. Looking at lynx tracks and breaking out the snow shoes in this vlog.

This is not the first tine I have heard of chickens killing rats and mice! And the hay bales bring back my childhood memories of haying with the neighboring farmer (our own land was put into conifers, for sale at Christmas and also as ornamentals in yards). He had a dairy herd. He gave us free, raw milk and we helped with haying and other things around his farm. Hay smells so wonderful after it's cut and before it is baled. The fragrance changes from one day to the next and just by the smell you can almost tell how long ago it was cut- how many hours or days. But only until it is baled. We currently live in a rural area and we always buy or trade locally except for those things that have to bordered or gotten in a town. It is not always cheaper to buy locally but it helps our neighbors and village.

The snowball lanterns are equally enchanting! And, I see what you mean about the ice lanterns having acquired some more texture. Ice constantly changes with the weather- temps, humidity (or not) and other factors, I suppose. At least, that was how it was on our land, when I was a child. Our ponds took on so many different characteristics as winter progressed and we learned what ice was safe and what was not, for skating.

My chickens kill mice too! Rodents are just a part of life if you have chickens. Although cats do the job nicely as well :) thank you for sharing your life with us! I hope we get some snow to make the lanterns here but getting ready for below zero weather here so an ice lantern will do just as well. Many blessings to you

I shared your word today. My niece said "I am sure the Finnish and all Scandinavian peoples have many words for snow we can't even imagine. I want one that depicts how I feel when commuting in said Loskapaska, like Loskapaskaangst." I think she's on to something! 😄

I hope one day you can spot a lynx. They are very difficult to spot. This week there was a deer carcass 2 km from Siskola. There is a flock of volves in the area. 😬

Yeah it would be so cool to spot it sometime if I'm really lucky!
Yikes, those you'd probably prefer to only see on a trailcam or something. 😅

The size of a lynx paw intrigued me so that I checked Wikipedia - Eurasian Lynx really is quite a beast, similar size to a cheetah, but 'with a weak heart'.

There should be Lynx where I live as well, though I am not good enough yet to read tracks and so on, so I cannot really say for sure what the tracks I've seen have been so far. First I need to know how each animal move to be able to visualize its tracks while being out there, as well as knowing how to distinguish the prints themself. Definitely want to learn more about it.

I'm lucky to have a dad who helps me alot with identifying tracks but I also found it very helpful to join an animal track Facebook group where you can ask if you're unsure and learn from the photos other people post. Good luck researching! 😁🐾

Murhurointi kanoja, vähänkö hauska xD! Ei niiden esi-isät olleet raptoreita turhaan :D Mutta hyvä vaan että pystyvät puolustamaan itseään.

No kyllä, barbaaria porukkaa! Just tänään näin somessa postauksen siitä että jos pitää kanoja sylissä niin hyvä muistaa varoa ettei ne noki silmiin. 😂 Iteltä meinannu joskus lähteä lävistykset naamasta..
