ROAD HOUSE (2024) Movie Review | Jake Gyllenhaal | Conor McGregor | Prime Video

- We were shocked at how much we enjoyed this second round at the "Road House." The remake retains the basics of the 1989 Patrick Swayze cult favorite: A legendary fighter is asked to clean up a notoriously rowdy dive bar, and gets tangled up with the locals. But Jake Gyllenhaal's take on the mythological character of Dalton is totally different: amusingly playful, but with an even darker side lurking underneath. Directed by Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith") from a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. Co-starring Daniela Melchior, Jessica Williams, Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen and Joaquim de Almeida. Streaming now on Prime Video.

Conor is just playing the crazier version of himself, although we never see him do lines 😂.
The scene where Billy Magnussen was getting a shave on the boat was funny, though the continuity of the shaving cream kept getting messed up, which also made me laugh. I liked it, a bit long but good overall.
Glad you had fun. Billy Magnussen is a treat.
I watched the movie last night. I personally prefer the original. That movies silliness & lines make it fun for me. Dalton having to clean up that bar made sense to me.
Despite ROAD HOUSE 2, Swayze's character was named James Dalton. It's written on his medical file when he meets Kelly Lynch.
I wish I liked this film more. I think it fundamentally misunderstands what ROAD HOUSE was. With inflation it was a sub $38M film, all practical. The who's who of the Hollywood stunt community all worked on it at the time and they built the Double Deuce and Red's store in the parking lot of Melody Ranch (and then blew it up). This movie cost more than double the inflation adjusted original (no ROAD HOUSE film should cost that much) and there's a shocking amount of cgi/vfx work.
Ha, thanks for tha!
Conor McGregor is bat shit insane but so is gylllenhall. Lol.😂
I was also surprised this movie was watchable. The fights are fun and the comedy lands. Not as good as the original, but I was never bored.
Isn't it fun? And apparently they're doing a sequel.
@@BreakfastAllDay yeah, I watched this movie because corridor digital did a video about the visual effects. They found that the director had the actors hit a pad where their fight partner would be and combined it with footage of the other actor being hit. This produced a look of the actors fist realistically halting on impact and kinetic energy traveling back up the actors arm. I have to say, this effect is amazing. These are some of the most brutal looking hits I've ever seen in a movie fight scene.
So who plays Sam Elliot's character or did they leave that character out of it? Because he's pretty much the best part of the original, and one of the greatest supporting performances ever.
There is no Sam Elliott figure here.
Too bad. A mistake to take out that character
@@BreakfastAllDay They are holding him back for a Wade Garrett prequel film starring Bradley Cooper. That's what A STAR IS BORN really was, a stealth audition for the role.
@@kendallandrews8691 I agree
Jake Gyllenhaal is like John C. Riley in that 99% of the movies he chooses to be in are good.
I had low expectations, so was surprised how much I laughed. Last 30 min was the worst part. Conor was funny and I like how the movie acknowledged through Magnussen how insane his character was.
It is fun for a while!
Are you guys going to review "Problemista"? I think you'd both really dig it!
It's playing at the air force base near my town! I used to take jui jitsu classes and I had a college UFC fan phase. I always wanted to be in great shape. 😅 Back to gym. Being in the military myself long ago you had to keep in shape but trust me that isn't the case anymore.😅
Well, it's good to hear that it's fun 'cause our dear Patrick Swayze deserves no less and we all know that whatever Jake does, he puts his all into it!!
This is true! Hope you're enjoying some downtime this Saturday, Bev.
Something tells me Christy needed a cold shower after this. lol
7:14 I “that thing” seemed obvious when they were discussing and looking at the fight on RUclips at the bar.
It’s obvious what happened, even though they don’t really go into detail. I think the throwaway “friend” part was supposed to be the bigger revelation in terms of telling us more.
@@Locusto199 Yeah, I guess the psychological aspect remained unexplored as opposed to how the death occurred.
@@wolflarson71it was literally in the dialogue when they watched the RUclips video in the movie.
@@valmacclinchy Yeah, I don't get the confusion on their part.
I really hope this is sharknado worthy
It's not so-bad--it's-good, it's legitimately good!
This would make a great double feature with “Perfect Days” ☺️
This was a B grade movie - like a Jason Statham - Scott Adkins level actioner with a higher budget. I don't agree this is theatrical - it completely felt like direct to video to me.
I’m gonna see it EVENTUALLY but I don’t have Prime And I want to revisit the old one cuz I’m old (I was 17 when I saw Dirty Dancing in theatres!) and I always love seeing dreamy 80’s Patrick Swayze. Ya’ll’s review was so good!! Thank you for always warning us of what we’re going into w/ 2 different views!!🙏🏼😎
I watched the original for the first time and the 2024 remake back to back. The original is more entertaining. I didn’t care for the second half of the new film. Conner McGreggor kind of drags the film into a place that might work for some, but for me ruined the film.
Jake Gyllenhaal is great. Arturo Castro is a standout. Jessica Williams is barely in it, but likable for her few scenes.
@@majorlazor5058 I’m assuming I’ll concur!! Thx for another pov.
Ouch, I was a 4. I really like Jake Gyllenhaal, but grew increasingly tired of this after about 65 minutes. It was so desperately predictable. BTW - There is a RUclips video about his training routine for this movie. It's way better than the film itself.
I went right to your channel the second I got done watching this! Your guys are amazing! Right on point! 🤩🤩🤩
I enjoyed this movie !
Conor Mcgregor stole the show in the reimagining but the original Road House is the best!
He stole the show and tossed it in the dumpster. He really brought a level of cartoonishness that I found off putting
I wouldn't say this one is worse than the original, but the original is a lot more fun. It becomes generic action movie without the original's overcooked melodrama.
All I know about the first roadhouse is that this Swayze's guy is the guy from that ghost movie😂
And that Dirty Dancing movie!
I haven’t seen the original, and was wondering if that turn had happened in the first one.
It was a great re imagining and the homoeroticism not as bold and vivid as in the original but still there‼️👍
This review is the closest I'll get to seeing the film. I wouldn't watch a remake of Road House if I was IN the movie.
It was actually pretty fun!
I want a movie about a bar knuckle bear fighter.
The ending of this was just like "Dune." Think about it.
Wait ... how?
@@BreakfastAllDay Connor is like Feyd-Rautha, Dalton is Paul, and their fight at the end, without giving too much away, ends in a similar fashion (with the knives). And, um, there is sand...so that's like "Dune." But there is also water, which is not like "Dune."
@@ChrisOliver4307 This is a very interesting theory!
Yah, stupid...
2024. Where everything is Bigger, Louder, Stupider. Last 30 minutes are unwatchable. Someone build me a time machine so I can go back to 1989. 5/10. First 60 minutes enjoyable.
It does grow repetitive.
On the 20 minute mark I laughed harder than I have with most comedys. This movie was fun. Jake is just as charming as Swayze.
Wait, what happens at the 20-minute mark? Remind us.
I actually did lol during that bit too. It’s when Jake takes the bikers to the hospital.
@@Locusto199 That's such a good bit!
@@BreakfastAllDay He drives the biker gang to the hospital after kicking their ass.
@@Locusto199loved it!😂
Sam Elliott should have had a cameo
I used to review movies like you in prison
Seriouly , like the discussion
movie was horrible. best parts were the scenes of the florida keys
Thank you! I thought I was the only one who couldn't stand this crappie movie...
Makes me think of the SNL satire of Billy Jack: He would only fight if he was attacked. And luckily, he was attacked a lot.
Ha! People do come after him a lot.
Agreeing more with Christy in this video. The interactions between the characters are excellent. And the protagonist is so captivating that he needs a sequel. The way Doug Liman film the car cop scene and the bar scene with the meeting between villain and hero are incredible.
I'll put it on, it's free...ish.
Swayze Dalton... Spoiler... He also took a life, remember the throat rip?
Wow, this was bad. Really bad. I get it, the original was schlock but very enjoyable schlock. Gyllenahaal is a very capable actor and he's obviously in terrific shape. But his performance in this film is like watching paint dry. Low-key barely sums it up. 20 minutes in I had to turn it off, kept waiting for Ben Gazzara or some character actor even remotely devious to show up. Never happened. The hospital scene where Jake drops off the guys after he has just beaten the S#!T out of was beyond ludicrous. Kelly Lynch, where are you?
Aww, that was a really funny scene. Maybe the ludicrous nature of it was the point? Sorry you didn't enjoy it but thanks for watching our review.
@@BreakfastAllDay Hey Christy, I guess we can agree to disagree.. Big fan of your channel either way. Where's Matt these days?
@@davidnussbaum2977 Thanks David! He's been busy with another job and a dog his family adopted.
I liked Gyllenhaal a lot but I didn't really like the movie as a whole. Limon must have been full shit when he said in his statement that it tested through the roof. Bullshit. I just liked certain bits and there were jokes that made me laugh. The bigger fights were overproduced and didn't feel real on a gut level. At all. But honestly, if Gyllenhaal wasn't so good in it, I would have simply checked out. Conor McGregor (and his butt cheeks) was ridiculous.
Isn't Jake G totally charming here? He has such a breezy way with his dialogue. Thanks for your thoughts, Larry!
@@BreakfastAllDay He really was terrific imo. He's the only reason i kept watching He was great.
Thank god this isn't going to be polluting theaters.
Jake Gyllenhaal is no Patrick Swayze. But Connor McGregor is the best entertainment value in the whole show.😂
interesting, do feel a big fun movie, loses impact on streaming.
Conor was amazing
I can’t recall any performance of Jake Gyllenhaal’s that impressed me. He’s not a romantic lead or superhero dude. I don’t get it. That’s just me.
I just watched it, was a bit disappointed. Nothing like the original. It would flop in the theater.
This was one of the worse movies I've ever seen ,total waste of 2 hours. And it has to easily be the worse movie Jake has ever made. I hope I never see McGregor in a movie or any acting gig ever again, absolute garbage.
Is it really 2 hours long???
It's movies like this that I tune into to hear Alonso hate on
Ha, we are here to entertain 😄
No Swayze. No Roadhouse.
I miss him too.😢
I also loved this?!? Very staying up late watching Cinemax just to stay up late energy (and I was pumped up on the same amount of junk food and caffeine)
And Chekhov’s gator! I dunno, I never get to see new movies when they’re fresh let me have this…
Ha, late night Cinemax! That's a memory. Glad you had fun too.
i know it’s bad but i was entertained
That's perfect!
This movie took a weird ass turn towards the end felt likea different movie. And im sorry but Conor was terrible 🤷🏿♂️
Ha, he was indeed, Jarvis 😆
Did you expect an Oscar winning performance from Connor? He played in perfect with the campiness of the movie
What a horrible stupid movie, nothing like the original...
I enjoyed it. I'd give it a solid 6.7/10
Glad you had fun too!
Terrible film - McGregor needs to go back to his $100m yacht and talk shit on Instagram. His forced accent inflections were laughable.. 3/10
