Unless, you're equipped with stronger gear and magic (preferebly heavy or shielded), using blunt weapons enchanted with lightning damage, or your str. stats for fisticuffs (if out of choice) are enough to pulverize them into bonemeal
Give money, take it back multiple times till like he doesn't/does care about the glitch. Ask him rumors, interrupt and see he hates being interrupted more than stealing. Bribe him to fight the skeleton on your behalf. Classic.

While gold doesn't wheigh anything, characters can catch you if it's a large amount, like 700 gold You can use this trick to level up Stealth, so it's practically the same
