- Nagano, JAPAN - 1998 Nagano Winter Games, Figure Skating, Pairs' Short Program - Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia placed 3rd after this skate.

They skated to an overused staple of figure skating music but with their skills they manage to make it their own and transfix the audience. Four years later in Salt Lake , their Lady Caliph short program was perfection. Plus they are a beautiful pair to look at it. Her delicacy and vulnerability matched with his presence. Wow.

Beautiful skating. Imo they are in the top 3 of the best pair skaters of all time in terms of sheer beauty, artistry and quality of skating.

Tamara Moskvina has said her only thought when Anton fell was "4 more years", because she knew they were not going to win with the fall. They were the perfect pair for me. Just exquisite.

As a kid I didn’t really understand what skating quality meant and didn’t get at all why Elena/Anton would fall on some elements and STILL finish the short programme in top3 or even leading. Now after all these years I get it. They really could have afforded a fall bc their grace, speed, lines (!) and overall the smooth highest quality of everything they did (I’d say even their notorious bump on the triple twist was beautiful) made it possible. Back in those years I was a big Zagorska/Siudek fan but boy, now I can see what gap there was between Elena/Anton and the rest of the field.

Had Anton not fallen, they could've probably won the competition. They were far better than Kazakova/Dmitriev.

It is perfectly understandable that they were above Ina & Dungjen. Great speed and flow across the ice, lines, postures, great unison. The only thing they didn't do right was the sbs triple toe. They did all the elements better than any other pair.

They were the closest thing to G&G. Same wonderful qualities of extreme speed, flow, beautiful positions, super-high twist. What a shame about the fall. I think they were better than Kazakova & Dmitriev. It sort of felt like 1994 all over again - the "perfect" balletic pair against the passion of Artur Dmietriev.
They were better than G&G. In fact BS are where GG’s quality of skating meets the artistry of MD, not the same passion and drama obviously but this mesmerizing emotional skating.
I think those are the outfits they wore in My Sergei.
They were not better than G&G they are very similar but it is not the same feeling. G&G's blades literally didn't sound like they were flying, Sergei's throws are still the best to this day and coordination and jumps, Sergei Grinkov was the complete pack. It was a physical beast and Katia looked like a ballerina, when they skated vocalise the passion was felt from the last stand.
G&G didn't make complex elements because they didn't need them, the zueva programs were exquisite and they made the elements by the book, katia's positions in the air were amazing. I got to see katia literally jumping from sergei's arms and falling back into them without any fear and his body seemed not to notice the impact.
But yes in my opinion these two pairs were the best ever.
To this day I don't know how a man as physically big as Grinkov in 1994/95 could do those death spirals with those deep edges.

@@annaliese9453 Grinkov was much bigger physically than Anton so it weighed more in the 1994-1995 season and had deeper blades, not to mention that Katya made the best entrances in the spirals. Sergei was the best at lifting and throwing. Hands down
@Dylvente That and because the quality of everything else they did was unbelievable. I'm still not sure they should have been above Ina & Dungjen, but the speed, flow, choreography, extension, power, control of all their other elements was without parallel. Had he landed that triple tow, given how late in the evening they skated, I can't imagine there wouldn't have been a slew of 6.0's for that program.
@intldawn It's true that B&B were particularly strong on the other elements and had very good choreography, so your point is well taken.
@RustDemon79 I was lumping all the European and Asian countries as well as Australia together with the east, leaving only Canada and the U.S. to the west. When countries like France join with the Russians, I tend to count them as east. I thought about it after posting that comment: by my standard, who else could have been west? Not unless there were judges from Mexico and South America, which there naturally wouldn't be. So you make a fair point.

Да,бегал он по бабам знатно,да все по выгодным для себя,добрался-таки и до газовой трубы!Жизнь удалась,только почему такой вид у него потрепанный,видимо путь к роскоши был тернист!Хорошо ,что Елена не дала вытянуть все свои олимпийские и заработанные в Америке деньги.Осталась бы на бобах-ни семьи,ни нормального жилья!Умница!Достойный ее человек,если его нет,обязательно найдется!

I don't care how great their speed, flow, whatever was...the fact is, he screwed up the most important element in everyone's eyes, the triple jump. Booooo. Should have been somewhere in the lower top-10.
