This is how we built our slatted ceiling in our campervan. This was a look we saw in a photo online a number of years ago and popularized by Vanlife Sagas, and we knew we had to recreate it! We tried it out first in our 2007 Sprinter and had no idea where to start, but came up with the process you see in this video. We absolutely loved the colours and contrast it created in the van. This time around, we had the process down pat and are stoked to share with you how we did it 😊

This slatted ceiling is probably one of the most visible and eye catching features you can put in a campervan. The lines help lead the eye down the camper van, adding depth to it and ultimately creating a much more homey and aesthetic space. Best of all, the ceiling is a space saver and only takes up 3/4 of an inch, and we all know how important space in a camper is!

The drawing of the fan @2:39 is excellent. I'm going to use that drawing in my next build.
😂
Hi thank you for the video.. any way you might still know the brand? color, name of the stain you used? you held up the can but I can't make out the name
Thank you
I believe it was called tree bark - it’s a solid stain from Home Hardware that I diluted slightly
Did the brad nails hold? Or did any fall/loosen over time?
We sold this van so we can’t be sure but we nail in at different angles to fight loosening - you can also add wood glue for good measure!
What was the measurement of the wood slats you put up for the ceiling? Did you guys stain them with the same color you used for the plywood?
Good question, we should have mentioned this! We cut the slats 2.5" wide, and stained them a much lighter brown than the backing ply 😊
@@jenniejames ceiling looks great! I’m looking Into doing this in my van but struggling to find slats that won’t add loads of weight. Did you cut the slats from 2.5” wide from a piece of ply? If so how thick was the ply?
What kind of wood did you use for the slats?
These days we use nice 1x3’s but that was actually just 3/8 ply ripped into 2 1/2” strips
did the spray foam God complete your installation on this van? that spray foam evenness and consistency is incredible!
We had that part professionally done!
This is from our first build series and we've improved a lot since this build! Check out our latest van tour if you're interested in seeing what we've been up to recently 😊
I love how you did this! I’m working on a small school bus conversion and I think I’ll do my ceiling this same way! I love how it looks, so polished ❤️
Thank you! Yes we love it and do one in almost all of our builds
Hey guys , doing my roof soon, what size gap did you use? Thank you 😊👍
We did a 1/2” gap! Good luck on your build!
How thick was the plywood U used to attach the slats to? and did U make the slats from ply and how thick?
Both layers were made of 3/8 ply!
Great job James clearing up the measuring of the fan cutout! So impressed with you two, how well you both work together and the finished vans you've done. A fan from out in BC living on a sailboat!
Awe thank you so much Sailor Girl! ❤️ Really appreciate it!
@@jenniejames Look forward to seeing more from you both!
What did you use for the final wall panel that looked like marble?
Do you mean in our shower? It was a shower wall system 😊
You guys are a vibe. Question; I'm a bit anxious about drilling the plywood straight into the ceiling beams as there is no way to prevent the hole from rusting. What are your guys thoughts on this?
We’ve never had it be an issue 😊
Did you just cut the strips out of plywood?
Yes we did! We've also used 1x3 planks which are quite a bit heavier. I would recommend the ply strips if you're going with a darker ceiling look, but if its a lighter ceiling stain, the side of the ply shows and it doesn't look as good, so in that case I would go with the 1x3 planks
Beautiful ceiling.
This is what we wanted originally but😁
Awesome job💪💪💪
Thanks 😊
What skylight did you guys go with?
… I’m wondering the same.
