  • Its been a while since I did these videos on hand warmers but I still think the Whitby is the best, both mine still work well, BUT as it has been 5 years since the upload I will delve into the world of hand warmers once more as I have noticed electronic battery versions creeping onto the market in the last couple of years SO, watch this space for an update. PS, my Chinese hand warmer are still working great, the Zippo's have had to have replacement catalysts and do not work so well any more!

    For this reason, I’ve always preferred the smaller 6 hours Zippo which work marvelously. I’d say quite the same as these Chinese hand warmers. The small Zippo here in the U.S., goes for about $12.00, and I got them in two days.
    All that said, I just ordered two of these to have also. The two cost the same as one 6 hour Zippo. I love my Zippo hand warmers, but I’ll have these as backup. Superb value!
    Marvelous review, sir… thanks! 👍🏼

    I might buy a couple. I have an S-Boston Handwarmer. It is very convenient and works wonderfully because you can start it by pushing a button and turn it off when you don't need it. However, it is very expensive. Around $40 USD. I also have an old JON-E handwarmer and it works fine too. Thanks for the video!

    I got my china versions in the mail the last week. I also ordered 2 replacement catalytic burners from china with my chinese hand warmers. I've used my zippo hand warmer a couple of ice fishing seasons with cold hands even with the zippo hand warmer. I decided to do a test. I changed the zippo catalytic burner with the chinese version catalytic burner and guess what the zippo hand warmer works like a champ now. Don't toss your zippo hand warmer just yet. Get yourself a replacement catalytic burner from china for $2 and make your zippo hand warmer work correctly.

    Here's a tip for anyone that has a defunct Zippo, as I did. After watching this, I got curious, and took one of the spare catalyst heads from a Chinese butterfly model, took the material out of it, and then after removing the material from the Zippo cataylst head, placed the chinese catalyst material into the zippo head, and then replaced the old zippo material under it, and then replaced the retainer clip. That was a $2.00 fix that brought the Zippo beyond it's original perfomance, and it ran for the same time and just as hot as the Chinese one after that. I also ordered a couple of these smaller ones like yours from an Ali seller. I noticed that they seem to have another similar one, but with more holes in it that they say is 50g weight, for $10.00 ($2.00 more), so I also ordered one so I could compare. Another thing I noticed, you refer to the cloth pouch as 'fire retardent', I don't think it is. And again, I'm very curious now to see if the Carbon Felt could be used as the catalyst material, if it can, it would probably last a lot longer in terms of life span. If you get a chance, perhaps you could weigh yours and post their weight.

    I've got an older Zippo handwarmer that has a burner similar to the chinese warmer. I bought two new Zippo handwarmers for my kids for hunting last year. They've changed the burner over the years to what you have now. I don't care much for the new burners, although they seem to be working ok....they should have stuck with what works good instead of changing the burner style.

    Very appropriate video, well done and looking forward to the latest one. I also had good results swapping out the catalyst material in a Zippo for the Chinese material. With that said, a couple of observations on comments made in this video: 1: we have not found that a jet flame damages our catalyst heads, but perhaps this is possible? 2: These pouches are not made from fire retardant cloth. 3: The small Chinese warmers do not get twice as hot as the Zippo's. Given the same amount of available ambient O2, the resultant surface temperature is about the same (about 40C). Heat loss is also a function of the mass of the unit. Remember high school physics: the larger mass hand warmers will transfer more BTU's to cold hands on contact, and then recovery time will be correspondingly longer. For warming hands at -25C, the larger mass hand warmers are more suitable. (They will also require more oxygen to reach that energy while rewarming the body of the unit). The best upgrade you can make to these is to remove all the cotton batting (note the burn marks on yours in the video, that will obstruct efficient catalyst sublimation) that burns at 250C, with carbon felt that burns at 1200C.

  • @MountainParameters
    @MountainParameters 10 лет назад

    I have had the same experience. I got 2 Zippos start of season. I had to take them out of the bag to keep my fingers warm, then eventually the top would detach and I'd have nothing but cold fingers. However they got even worse and now, based on your comments, I'm sure I wrecked them even more using the jetted lighter. So I got 2 of the Chinese clones (the larger ones that look similar to Zippo's) along with replacement heads, from an ALi seller, and I was amazed at the difference in performance, so I bought 4 more (the wait to Canada was about 3 weeks). I was also very happy to discover that regular camping naptha works just fine, it does not need to be lighter fluid. I am recommending them to associates that are in the SAR community, and I'm thinking that I will next try these smaller ones that you recommend. What I'm keen to try, when I can find some, is to replace the material in the catalytic head with carbon felt. Apparently those welder's mats are the cheapest source of Carbon Felt, so I'll grab some next time I'm in the appropriate store. I'm going to embed your video in our website. Thank's for the Head's up! (PS: 2 nights ago where I am in the Rockies, it hit -34C, so these are still very useful right now).

    • @MountainParameters
      @MountainParameters 9 лет назад

      Update, now that I understand them better, you cannot use Carbon Felt as a catalyst in the head, however it does perform well if you take out the cotton batting in the reservoir and replace it with carbon felt. It eliminates the burned area under the head that sometimes develops on the cotton and increases performance.

    Nice helpful vid, thanks.
    The bag isn't fireproof, though.
    The purpose of the bag (usually made of flannel) is to absorb some of the heat so that you're able to handle the warmer, otherwise it gets too hot to hold.

    The Chinese version looks particularly similar to Zippo's smaller 6-hour hand warmer. It uses the same catalytic converter as the 12 hour version featured in this video, but with a smaller body for higher temperatures. Do you happen to know if the catalytic converters from the Chinese version and Zippo are interchangeable?

      Hi .. Jon E handwarmers have gone out of business , there are quite a few kicking around some
      quite unused...from my own experience the methods servicing are exactly the same but the Jon E
      catalytic burners are different in size and design..a Jon E H/W burner is basically a tube impregnated with a substance ...then surrounded by a metalic cloth weave silver substnce which surrounds the tube.. then it is crimped each end wheels and seels ober the tube....The warmers are larger so a straight fit from Zippo / Peacock is OUT... You have to make do and maunufacture yerself. So what I did...cut the silver weave tube . removed the impregnated silver tube ... fitted a coiled spring .. packed with fibre platinum catalyst from end to end on the spring... so my own devices
      the Jon E ..H /Warmer ..comes to life it is like a mini furnace in my clothing and as well as the red baI put it in an old sock to turn it down ... 24 hours from the GI is not a problem

      +PimpMyReel Thanks, looking fwd to it as I'm tempted to buy a couple but building in the 2 wk delivery time. The cheap Far East (FE) version is smaller than the Zippo (Z) and Whitby (W) but as it gives out more heat, it kind of compensates for it being smaller and not having a bigger surface area to give out the heat vs the Z and the W. the FE is not overly small looking at your vid tbh, but it does mean less weight and bulk to carry round in the pockets.
