  • A brilliant interpretation of the Academy Award song "Over the Rainbow".
An almost sacrilegious audience cough right before the last melody note was digitally removed.

We all can hide behind the fast notes, tricks, but to play this way, it takes master skills, and an honest noble heart.
For me, this is the best interpretation ever, at least for this song. I’ve listened to this a thousand times, and never enough. His classical training comes out bursting through every fiber of his body, caressing every note with sincerity, humility and vulnerability. Which is pretty much what good playing is all about...

Jarrett masterfully dissolves the line between simple and complex harmony until the pure essence of the music is all that remains. This is my first time revisiting it in many years. Mr. Jarrett is not a musician that plays music on the piano. He plums the depths of the emotions the composer experienced when he or she created the piece. Mr. Jarrett absorbs all the feeling that was invested in the piece to the point where he becomes the music and then; using every iota of his heart and soul, he expresses those emotions through the piano. Committing 100% of his being to the process, he provides us with a masterful performance every original composer would likely be proud of.

I saw him perform at Avery Fischer Hall in NY C/Lincoln Center in the 1980's, and he performed this as one of his encores too. Memorable.

I bought the Koln Concert when it hit the music (record) stores. When I need, transcendent, I put it on and marvel at this man's ability to construct a melody...ON THE FLY.If you don't have it in your collection, you should. I wonder how many noticed the total lack of written music notation and pity the 197 who cannot appreciate genius when they HEAR IT! I'm also glad that he didn't "scat" sing over this,as he has over too many of his recordings. Thank you for sharing this!

Quite likely the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. It is a great loss to the entire world that this man is no longer able to play. I hope he has other creative outlets to express himself with, as it's clear he has so much to express.

To me, Keith Jarrett is in a class of its own. Jarrett is not playing like your usual pianist. He plays music inverted: instead of playing the notes, he uses notes to mark the space in between them. You can feel it: it expands and contracts. That's why he is so focused on dynamics: to accentuate that what he doesn't express. Only a true and original genius is capable of something like this. I just feel so darn lucky to witness this. Go with God, Keith.

Keith Jarrett is a world-class artist, which is why I still believe that even if a computer can emulate art at the level that Jarrett does, it will have the same effect on no one's soul because it will be something manufactured. In terms of art, brands will be created and their commercialization will be disputed between machines without leaving more than a temporary use value. That is why Gustav Kilmt, Jan van Eyck, Pablo Picasso, Mozart, Back, Tchaikovsky, Chick Corea and hundreds more that I don't remember now, will be immortal at a level that a robot will never reach.
