    This review is absurd. The BF Pro is ALL about amazing sound and stability and that's the #1 reason for any interface. TotalMixFX is such a powerful utility, once I spent 20 minutes learning it, how can you hate it? The iPad remote turns it into a total control center. It gives you LOOPBACK, what other utility does that? I don't need a power switch and the 1/4" HP jack is all you need when you use pro headphones. BEST interface, hands down. But it's all about SOUND. And thank you for saying it at 9:00.
    BTW, I use an Apogee One with my Windows laptop and it works great.

      Basically you confirmed what I had mention. Also see the other comments. There are many that has same furstration.Believe me I did learn it , I did read it, and it still a daunting experience. Yes loopback is nice,and it can be found in AUDIENT sound cards, that have cheaper price, better mic preamps for my ears(not scientific) and the mixer panel is times friendlier. I know, latency is different, but I speak for VOICE OVER industry.I am not a drummer and this review is from the perspective of an user that use it exactly for that, and stop commenting that different headphone outputs are not an issue. Guess what, IT IS for me. If you have a vocal booth like me, what you will do? The sound engineer will listen with in-ears and the talent with studio headphones, or? It is ridiculous and stupid. I am honest and I stay behind my words. Now RME teams all day long writing stupid comments, why because they know that I am so right.God bless you !

    I just purchased the RMA interface. I am not use the Thomas tax software at this point. But it looks like you can save multiple configurations in the software. I would think once you have a basic setting set up in your system you could use that. Or you can customize it to meet other scenarios and just re-call them as needed. Ultimately we all want a great sound. That is the most important thing and that’s why you keep coming back to RME. Looking forward to my UCX II. Thanks

Tried 2 UA Apollo's which I couldn't get used to and ended up with the BFPro for listening to music, occasional movies on Amazon and others. I would love to use it with my guitars, equipment, etc but it always ends in tears. The sound though is exceptional through my 5 year old JBL LS 305 monitors that just won't die.

    I totally agree about TotalMix. I've had a Fireface 400 since around 2008 and as you say I have to re-learn how to use it every time I go near it. I still cannot figure out the matrix view for routing. It just defies any logic to my mind. The device itself is superb but Totalmix is just too complex for my small brain!

  • @MisterManiac777
    @MisterManiac777 3 года назад +7

    Although bewildering before training, once you watch the instructional videos on Total Mix FX it is the best in the world. I love my RayDAT and it not only has ridiculously low latency, low enough to monitor while recording, but it is expandable to 40 tracks of i/o, making it future proof if I ever want to use an analog board again. The latency is low enough to use it as a digital patch bay, so you can use the RME mixer to bring analog processing into the DAW without any external routing equipment. I also work on professional AV installations and while I am always replacing other gear, the RME's are always present in the rack doing the job after being on and in use for 12-24 hours a day for years at a time. RME makes true masterpieces for those of us that like to work with native plugins and do not want the additional expense or latency of Universal Audio's offerings.

    • @electronicbox6990
      @electronicbox6990  3 года назад

      Every one has his own oppinion. Mine is different. I am a voice over artist ,not a drummer, so I am ok with Universal Audio latency, but to have their plugins is a benefit. Also user experience for me is as important as quality and hands down UA have million times better user experience. Again, thats me, and I am not paid by UA like you are by RME. Soon will make another video to show real life experience with musicians that for the first time see RME.

    • @clemdog76
      @clemdog76 2 года назад

      I just think you’re better off buying real analog gear opposed to the cost of uad… my babyface runs on buss power and with the current quality of today’s native plugins, uad is falling behind the lead. Now with the M1 max chips available, that’s also gonna change dramatically. No need to bulk up.

    • @MisterManiac777
      @MisterManiac777 2 года назад

      @@electronicbox6990 I don't get paid by RME. My first high end channel strip was a UA 6176 and it was very expensive. I don't think the Sharc processors aged well and I prefer low latency when monitoring my VSTs and when recording vocals. I do AV and RME is just in the rack a lot. They have them at lifestyle fitness and Microsoft stores for example. The high cost makes me want to consider analog instead. I like being able to choose my own converters. UA is fine, just not for me. I don't even have thunderbolt, my wife can try one in her mac book. I am sure it is fine if you use the direct monitoring feature.

    I agree. Total mix is to confusing. I can't seem to get my mic sound signal loud enough with out increasing the gain to the max In which making so much hiss and static. But wihen I turn down the gain on the babyface and turn up on the mixer total mix nothing happens. No mic sound or signal in my Dahl or sound in my head phones. That's with my headphone volume all the way up.. Not sure if I messed with the settings wrongly but yeah that's my problem with total mix. I currently have the older version of rme babyface.

    • @nikinik7503

      yes it is confusing.faders in rme doesn't affect the level. To change the level you have to use gain knob.For condenser mics around 34 db gain is ok for the most part, but if you are using old dynamic mic like Sure SM7 for example, you will have hiss sound and gain must go higher.

    RME Total mix is sheer brilliance. Anyone who takes the time to use it will know how good and intuitive it is once you get the concept of an old recording mix console with input, playback and output busses.
    Just make sure you in submix mode otherwise you'll be like Electronic Box, a little lost.
    Another thing is Cubase Direct Monitoring in the Control Room controls RME Total mix for seemless Zero Latency Monitoring. Absolutely brilliant.
    I've had my RME Fire Face for 20 years still works perfectly. I control it with a behringer bcf 2000 usi g mackie control.

    I absolutely love RME and their engineers’ dedication to utmost DAC quality. I agree the TotalMixFX learning curve is steep, and honestly I’ve never mastered it. That said, I just want to add my .02 that I no longer recommend Apogee to anyone. They blew everyone away over a decade ago with the original Duet, but the Duet 2 was plagued with firmware issues, and the software support is almost nil today. Furthermore, they have chosen to no longer support the One that I still have, as it is a USB-A device, and I now record mobile on an iPad Pro. It would require a small investment on their part to update their drivers to accommodate USB-C. They instead refused to do it and simply told their users it was impossible and their devices are now useless. This is the opposite of RME’s approach to legacy devices and firmware support. There are still people out there using the original FireFace with FireWire (!) because RME provides updated drivers for most modern OS’s. That being said, Apogee no longer deserves the same status that RME and UA share in the “prosumer” market. Because RME’s DAC’s and preamps best the UA’s, RME wins the day imho. Thanks for your video!

      I have an arrow. Similar to the solo. Sounds great. As long as you don’t use midi and don’t mind only having two audio inputs at a time... ever. Also the thunderbolt cables are shorter than usb. Also check out prices for UA plugins and ask yourself If you don’t mind the prices, or don’t think you’ll need to buy any.
      Finally, if you do use any UA plugins you will need to have your UA interface plugged in to work on projects. So if you ever work on the move, or want to do a little mixing in the sofa, you must have your arrow plugged in and within 3 feet of you to do so.... again this is only if you use any UA plugins in a project.
      If this sounds like I don’t like the arrow that’s not entirely the case. I really like the sound. I just wish it had midi, a couple line inputs, a longer data cable, and didn’t require me to have it plugged in (in some situations).

    Hi, great video, very helpful, thank you.
    I am looking to upgrade my audio interface mainly to improve the quality of recording vocals & pre mixing my productions before sending them out to be mixed & master.
    I have a aston spirit mic with the focusrite forte. The forte has served me well but it has been discontinued, its a little old now & i have issues sometimes with it cutting out.
    I am interested in getting the Rme Pro Fs & the Focusrite Clarett 2pre usb. Do you know if the difference in quality between these two interfaces is enough to pay the extra £300 for the rme babyface pro? Or is the Clarett good enough upgrade from the forte for what i need? Or is there any other interfaces you think that might be better for me? My budget is around £500-600

But when I watch a little of RME’s setup video for Babyface and Total Mix, it looks elegant and very deep - with quite a few unique/proprietary design conventions - but it doesn’t look too cryptic at first glance. Very beautiful/inviting looking interface too,

    Great review, very honest and clear, it helped me out to make a decision.
    Just a comment about the RME Babyface Pro FS headphones outputs. They are different impedance because they are for different types of headphones (high /low impedance) they’re not necessarily supposed to be used at the same time (although it’s possible) but if you wanna do it you should keep in mind that you will need to connect the right type of headphones in the right output. Another comment for whoever is considering the RME Babyface is, is it really important if the software mixer looks pretty or not? It seems like RME company focuses more on design, sound quality and performance than something else, so if you’re looking for that there you go, but instead if you’re looking for fancy against quality that’s another thing. Thanks!

      I know that they are 2 impedance, but the question is WHY? And the answer is because it is an ugly and counter-intuitive design. And the second answer is because their architecture does not allows 2 faders, so they put 2 options for high and low impedance. I don't consider their software design as nice at all. But to be honest RME level knob for monitors is my favorite. Some cards need to turn and turn forever. For this RME is spot on.As always i am completely honest and what i found nice i share it.

It is designed to push one set of headphones. End of story. It is a convenience and nothing else that there is a high impedance and low impedance output. Why is the high impedance output 1/4"? Because it is more typical of high impedance headphones. Why is the low impedance output 1/8"? Because cheap low impedance headphones are usually 1/8". This isn't difficult.

    Finally, the price of the plugins. UA preamps sound uninspiring without a unison preamp model set up, and the UA plugins are too expensive.
    The headphone amp doesn’t seem like much of a concern to me. If I want multiple people to listen, I use speakers.

    This was very welcome information you did a great job keeping it straight to the facts, but I think you're going to be costing me a lot of money. I need four more really good preamps and I didn't look at the baby face because it only has two and then I thought I might buy like a tascam something or other with four pres, or the mackie, but you persuaded me that I should save my pennies and just get an rme with four mic inputs. And I have to say that Babyface pro is just ugly and with the breakout cable and everything just cables all over the place. Anyway thanks so much for a great video, I hope you and yours are safe and well take care

      @@electronicbox6990 thanks for the helpful reply, much appreciated. So let me ask one more: do you know if Audient has plans for an iD44 MK II? I'd get that in a heartbeat, but I just can't bring myself to buy the first generation, seems like older tech (and I find the unit ugly in appearance, but that's not an issue) but maybe I'm wrong, good sound is good sound, like what Dave Pensado says: what matters is only what's coming out of the speakers, I'd use Behringer if it sounded good, I don't have gear envy, well not too much! Maybe I should just go for a deal on a iD44 MK 1. As I understand it, those sound great, have digital I/O, inserts direct to converters bypassing the preamps, and 4 very usable mic pres w lots of routing options, and beautiful DI inputs. Actually, as I'm writing this, I'm kinda talking myself into it! Take care

      @@electronicbox6990 thank you so much for your reply, I agree, and I'm now looking at a used id44 which will save me money, and do the one thing I need this to do beautiful conversion without a hassle w routing, inserts and four completely flat preamps that I can color the way I want once captured. With the money I'll save I'm going to buy a dedicated headphone amp. Since you're being so helpful, any thoughts on a great headphone amp? Maybe with two outputs? Fyi, There's a big sale on antelope audio hardware now, they've got their synergy core system with a bunch of plugins and the DSP for like $600. I gather those converters sound good but it looks like a nightmare getting locked into their ecosystem, the copy protection, and apparently inscrutable mix software. (I had their solo mic for about 10 minutes and was not impressed! I ended up going with the slate system) Sweetwater stopped carrying them with all the quality control problems they had but apparently they're doing better with that, but it just looks like it's too much to plow through. Take care

      I never used Antelope, even if they are made here in Bulgaria. I heard many good and many bad points. Their sound is very good and converters too. As you mentioned the eco system is the thing that drives crazy many users and also often driver compatibility issues. (but again those are rumors that other users share, NOT my own experience)

    • @electronicbox6990
      @electronicbox6990  2 года назад

      ID 44 is great. Its mic preamps are better than RME. The interface is a LOT friendlier. The ONLY issue I have was that the volume knob needs a lot of turns until the desired volume is reached. I noted that to Audient support, but they don't listen. On RME volume knob is more what you will feel as normal. ID 44 + Audien NERO is a great combo!

      That's what I am talking about. Thanks for the question!. I had explained million times to RME that their control panel while it is very fast, is super counterintuitive. But I have to say that if you learn it, then will not be great, still will drive you crazy, but will be a lot easy. The most important is the routing. Basically, if you need to hear something on your headphones, you have click on the headphone channel down below in the mixer just to select it, and then raise the fader from where you want to signal to come.RME old videos for me was much better than the latest ones. So use this link, and watch it as a series: ruclips.net/video/3CirlPcokfQ/видео.html

  • @vroteg
    @vroteg 8 месяцев назад

    Yep. Controversial at its best.
    Total mix is a little bit more complicated than ua or apogee or audient (a lot more confusing later one). But it’s also a lot more flexible. And usually complexity and ease of use doesn’t go toe to toe. But it’s not that much complex so you need to finish Harvard and learn to operate shuttle to use total mix. That said the deep complexity of software is well justified.
    One headphone output and one stereo output. This interface is for small bedroom studios and for travelling producers. You want 2 headphone outputs and more monitor outputs? Buy bigger one. Don’t see any problem here other than interface have not enough features specifically for you and your needs. In fact I like to have 2 headphone outputs dedicated to high and low impedance headphones. Very convenient for people who use both and don’t want to compromise audio quality.
    Power button yes. Would be nice.
