They dont. They hate because of stereotyping. Well because there are murderers on BOTH SIDESS. WELL I RECKON UNLESS YOUR RETARDED YOU WILL KNOW THAT MANY THINK EACH SIDE ARE SIMILAR. MURDER IS MURDER. SAD MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE WAS MURDERD.
I was picked up, hitchhiking, by a UVF paramilitary. 1981. I had Derry written on a cardboard sign, which marked me out as a Catholic. Once he had me in the car he started saying that he’d no idea where Derry was, but he knew a man who would and we should go see him. (Protestants call Derry, Londonderry.) He took me up into the loyalist Rathcoole housing estate, ignoring my pleas to let me out. We stopped at a house and he told me to sit there and he went inside. I was frozen and I just sat there. I saw him and whoever owned the house, looking out the living room window. I think if I’d run they would have chased me. But for some reason, it was not my turn to die that day. He came back to the car saying he now knew where it was. He drove me back to the motorway, up the on ramp, let me out, did a U turn and drove directly at on coming traffic, hanging out the window and shouting “Up the UVF!” He had UVF tats on his arms, and on his way to return me back to my life he told me he was just out of prison. What I believe happened is that he caught a Catholic and brought me to a more senior person in the Rathcoole UVF who told him to wise up and put me back.
Yeah sure ye did !!!! If you got picked up by those animals ,you wouldn't be telling the tale !!!! Or any uvf sectarian bastard !!! So either your a spoof or a Walter Mitty character
I think this story scares me all the more because you and I share a surname. So glad you were unharmed by these utter monsters. If they don't like the fact that the 6 counties are Irish why don't they leave?
I believe I was almost one of their victims as a kid. I was walking along the Antrim Road and just where the police station is now I walked past two men standing at a bus stop and a black taxi was parked on the road. It was dark and as I walked past them I don't know why but something told to me run. I turned around and they were almost on me. I ran as fast as I could and jumped through a hole in the hedge of the old house on the corner of the Cavehill Road and hid. When I finally came out they had vanished. I continued on down to the Quality shop facing the Waterworks and walked back home the same way. I never told anyone, not even my parents. It was years later that it suddenly dawned on me who they could have been. I think I was about thirteen or fourteen at the time.
It may be but how do you know this guy is a fantasist? I, myself knew a couple of the butchers but only found out after they were caught. I used to drink in the pub where they held meetings. I was taken to see Lenny Murphy after I stole a UVF mans car. I was lucky not to be kneecapped but told to give myself up to the police. I have other stories about those times as well. @@josephkennedy8281
I did 6 tours of Northern Ireland and sadly some people back in England thought that everyone over there was like this. Not true. The vast majority of people over there were nice decent people, Protestant and Catholic. There were a minority that were fucking savage, but most not at all.
My late mother came to England in the late sixties. She married my dad and settled in a small village near Bath. My mother would get regular hate mail pushed through the letterbox.
@@SeanRidley-g7z Unfortunately that was the attitude of a lot of people, me included. Before I served over there those of us who hadn't served there before thought that everyone over there was running around in balaclavas with AK47's and shooting at everything that moved, because that was what the media had us believe. The reality was very different. It's true it was certainly no holiday over there, but like I said, most people over there were good as gold, and fuck me they were funny. I didn't serve there until the late 80's onwards and they'd had this going on for years. They really only had 2 choices, either let it get to them or have a sense of humour about it, and the people over there were hilarious. Did things calm down for your mother?
these men were allowed to operate by the crown they were encouraged to kill it makes it look like the military is needed there even the head of the ira security forces who called the hits was an informant

I was walking up the Shankill Road after leaving a club, I was coming up to the Berlin Arms when I noticed a car coming down the road slowly with just side lights on. In those days I was a very fast runner, as I got to near Berlin Street I took off up the street I heard the car speed up, I run up a side street and halfway up there was a Ford transit van, I stopped behind the van, the car turned into the Street and sped up it, I went down the street an ran to my house in Winchester St, and nearly put the front door in. No idea if it was the Butchers or if it was the ira but I had a lucky escape.

I’m so sorry your family had to endure this. I firmly believe that the actions were not political. Those who participated in this atrocity were psychopaths who used the Troubles as an excuse for a serial torture and murder
I find it ironic that Murphy the killer was despatched by others of his kind..... I know the IRA did despicable things but I can't help thinking ' they got this one absolutely right"! Hate on me if you want but everyone has an opinion! Thank God times have changed and Ireland can be peaceful. No-one should have that "petrol emotion" ever again. May all the victims rest in peace.
One day in about 1965 I was walking to St. Anne's RC primary school in Stretford, Manchester with my friend John Kennedy when two similar aged kids came the other way. One of them shouted "Catlicks!" John shouted "Proddydogs!" back. That was the only time I was directly exposed to sectarianism in my life. I had to ask my Mum what it meant. In 1989 I was on a course in Glasgow and on the local news Mo Johnston was featured as having signed for Rangers having previously played for Celtic. Rangers fans were shown burning their season tickets and Celtic fans calling him a traitor. I'm still as baffled by it 35 years later. It's an insanity passed from father to son and I'm just glad that was never passed down to me by my father.
Growing up in the Black Country in England I never understood it either. I only found out a month ago my best friend as a lad is a Catholic, I’m 59 btw. This Catholic/Protestant hate was never a thing in my area then or now. I only found out my friend is Catholic because he is part of a history group that helps support a local building connected to a Catholic family manor. Apparently the Shankill people weren’t too ashamed of the butcher serial killers as recently they had Eddie McIllwaine , who was a member of the group of killers between 1975 and 1977 and was convicted of kidnapping and assault marching down the Shankill road as part of their big 12th parade, openly and brazenly ,the Orange Order which purports to be a religious , Protestant organization made a statement which previously defended the Shankill Butcher’s role in the organisation in the past, with a spokesman explaining: “Eddie McIlwaine is a member of a lodge and in good standing. The many Catholic victims of the butchers were very disappointed in the Shankill Orange Order for their lack of Christian understanding.
The Fenians had no problems with the IRA murdering innocents on multiple occasions before the Loyalist paramilitaries were even set up. You expect them to shed a tear for you? You reap what you sow.
How anyone suppports murdering innocent people is beyond me. Lets not forget the IRA murdered countless innocent civilians, many catholics, and there are statues commemorating them and parks were children play in named in their memory in nationalist towns .
For people who love marching I find it hard to believe that the good people of the shankill were utterly horrified by the brutal killings but were also simultaneously completely powerless to demonstrate their opposition.
What's the difference between the Shankill butchers and the south Armagh IRA that slaughtered 10 innocent protestants going home from a hard day's work? I'd like you to answer that for me because the MP for North Belfast John Finnicune said clearly last year at a commentation event in south Armagh, that EVERYONE regardless of who they were or what they had done had a right to remember their dead or be remembered by their people if they chose to. How many thousands of Catholics in north Belfast voted for John Finnicune? And yet I didn't hear one single complaint about the speech he gave in south Armagh. Very strange because I'll say again MP Finnicune made it absolutely clear that anyone has a right to honour the memory of the Shankhill butchers and likewise Eddie Mcillwaine has the right to remember the men of the 36th Ulster division if he wishes to...
Can you expand on your comment? I have to say it seems bizarre given that they operated in a relatively small area of Belfast the Butchers escaped justice for so long.
We are all born wanting and needing the same things...food, warmth, love...a change of clothes when we need it...a place to feel safe. We all come into this world naked, helpless and achingly vulnerable. Yet within each of us are also the same possibilities and our faith, class, race, place of origin or the politics of our families CANNOT limit those possibilities. We can be stubborn and stupid one moment but tenacious and brilliant the next and those of us who have the least are often the most generous. We are at our very best when things are at their worst. We all face the same challenges and are stronger when we stand together. We all know sorrow and we all know joy. Even our differences can be a source of delight if we let them. We have so much, so very much, to love each other for. I only wish people who get swept up in hatred and violence could realize this before that way of life consumes them.
It's in the human pshyce to kill each other...it will never change...the only species of animals on earth that is seven times more likely to kill their own kind....facts
One of the things that enraged the Murphy's was the irony that their surname was unequivocally Irish-Catholic, the most common surname in Ireland. All the same how does one begin to understand the mindset of such maniacs? Like the Nazi Holocaust it simply beggars belief😢
Kevin, that's a very popular but totally incorrect belief. Murphy is not that uncommon a name among Protestants and Martin Dillon's armchair criminology does not stand up to scrutiny.

I recall the smell of the explosive, the dislocation of the passage of time, the falling glass seemingly falling slowly and tinkling as it hit the ground all around me. My two friends were gone... Later I learned they had been killed - blown apart and lying somewhere in the butchered human remains around me Physically I remained completely untouched. I was working in Londonderry (as was then) in 1973. I was introduced to a guy who had a go kart track and a bar. We had a few pints of the black stuff and I thought he was a very warm and charming man. I was later told he had been recently released from prison for murder (sectarian) killing. It was surreal as there seemed to be a small talking point, no big deal. I never forgot that, the acceptance of it. I'm 73 now.
I'd like to know why that guy thinks the Shankhill butchers could be infiltrated? They were a small gang all well known to each other, it wasn't a large organisation you could volunteer to join. And if they knew the paramilitaries wouldn't agree with their actions and would hand out their own punishment to them, they obv would try to hide their actions from them also. A lot of 'I believe so' in there with these accusations it was allowed to happen, not much 'I have evidence' to prove it. And if someone did infiltrate them, does he realise they would have had to take part in the attacks? It's not like they could have just joined and done fund raising or something, because all they done was the attacks.
Loyalists continued to support the British Parliament or king, believing their economic or political interests would be best served by fighting for, or at least speaking up for, the British. Most Loyalists identified as pacifists and were morally unable to choose a side, owing to their religious beliefs. How long did the British rule Ireland? We lived as part of the English, and then British, Empire for over 700 years. The Normans first conquered Ireland in 1169 and aside from a brief decade of independence during the 1640s Ireland formed an integral part of the English imperial system, until 1922 and the foundation of modern state.29 Dec 2020 How did the British treat the Irish? A few decades later, the military defeat of Irish Catholic forces in the 1690 Battle of the Boyne allowed Britain to impose the Penal Laws on Ireland. They banned Catholics from public office and the legal profession, limited their opportunities for education and for practicing their religion. In 1938 Ireland and Britain signed a trade agreement, but when it failed to end partition, the I.R.A. grew disenchanted and began a bombing campaign in England that lasted until World War II. On April 18, 1949, Ireland left the British Commonwealth, and finally became a fully independent state. Why did England want Ireland? Texte intégral. 1During the early modern period, the colonisation of Ireland was concomitant with the building of the English Empire. The island became of interest to its neighbour for two main reasons: fertile and - from the English perspective - underexploited land, and Ireland's geographical During the famine, a blight wiped out the potato crop. The Irish could have survived this, but the British, who ruled the island at the time, confiscated the other possible foods which they could eat, in order to feed their armies. Effectively, they starved the Irish that they could take over the world. After the English revolution brought Cromwell and his parliamentary forces to power, he sent armies to crush resistance in Ireland with extreme brutality. In whole areas, the Irish population was exterminated or forced to flee, and Scottish or English protestant colonies were established.
there is a deep seated hatred In N. Ireland which I believe will never disappear. Segregation has always been our Albatross. And yet , the intrepid investigator and soon to be honoured by the queen of England, possessing all this insight ,failed , in the search for Murphy's last victim, to search a house , previously listed in his name.
Some of their victims were Protestants. One poor UDA man was bludgeoned to death with a breeze block by McAllister over a drunken argument for which he was shot through the elbows after a kangaroo court, hence the scars. Plus just after he got out of jail Murphy killed some poor stranger by beating him up then repeatedly running him over with a car just to show he was back on the street.
AS someone so far removed in both time and place from these events and, moreover, the underlying conflicts that fueled them, its hard to understand how such divisiveness and hatred could come from what seems, albeit from an ignorant outsider, rather inconsequential differences. I am admittedly uninformed, but it would seem to me that these people share so many more commonalities than differences.
I think it has been suggested that was a motivator to acting like he did. Being a protestant with an Irish name. As a kid he was supposedly bullied for that, and that pushed him towards the end result.
His ancestors would have converted to Protestantism during the famine years...in those days you could renounce your identity in exchange for life-saving food (usually soup). The British were pretty barbaric.
Over here it means somebody in his family "turned," changed their religion. Mind you, this could have happened back in the 50s. Gossipy types used to hear familiar Catholic names and say, 'aye somebody turned there!'

Sorry mate..misread
I was picked up, hitchhiking, by a UVF paramilitary. 1981. I had Derry written on a cardboard sign, which marked me out as a Catholic.
Once he had me in the car he started saying that he’d no idea where Derry was, but he knew a man who would and we should go see him. (Protestants call Derry, Londonderry.)
He took me up into the loyalist Rathcoole housing estate, ignoring my pleas to let me out.
He drove me back to the motorway, up the on ramp, let me out, did a U turn and drove directly at on coming traffic, hanging out the window and shouting “Up the UVF!”
He had UVF tats on his arms, and on his way to return me back to my life he told me he was just out of prison.
What I believe happened is that he caught a Catholic and brought me to a more senior person in the Rathcoole UVF who told him to wise up and put me back.
Beats using a taxi…
What a story! I can imagine the dread as you were sitting in that car while the UVF paramilitary went inside. Glad you lived to tell it.
Yeah sure ye did !!!! If you got picked up by those animals ,you wouldn't be telling the tale !!!! Or any uvf sectarian bastard !!! So either your a spoof or a Walter Mitty character

You are so blessed - I am from Canada 🍁 and just can not imagine living in an atmosphere like that. ♥️🇨🇦
Glad those cowards didn't get you friend.

I did 6 tours of Northern Ireland and sadly some people back in England thought that everyone over there was like this. Not true. The vast majority of people over there were nice decent people, Protestant and Catholic. There were a minority that were fucking savage, but most not at all.

It wud be interesting to know about their past, wt made them this way, by nature or nurture,
We are all born wanting and needing the same things...food, warmth, love...a change of clothes when we need it...a place to feel safe.

I remember reading the book. Probably THE time I began to lose my faith in humanity!.

The book by Martin Dillon is outstanding 🏴
Contains many, many errors.
I often wonder if the troubles in Northern Ireland hadn't happened, would people like Lenny Murphy have been normal members of the community or would they find some other reason to be brutal killers.
They’d have been the same sadistic killers no matter where or when they were brought up.
@@gezzarandom I think so too.
Murphy, no, he'd always end up killing. He was a psychopath. The others? maybe a good few would have lived realtively normal lives.

I showed a flag mate Lenny Murphy’s mugshot and he said he didn’t look tough or hard. Well they never do, look at Ted Bundy for example.
An inscription on the headstone of the leader of this gang of savages reads" Here lies a soldier" says it all doesn't it?

R,I,P, the victims off both sides of the struggle🙏
It's as well to remember that there were evil people on both sides of the divide.
@@tomkent4656 There were indeed evil people on both sides. I had my own close encounter with that evil in central Dublin on 17th May 1974 at 5.33pm. I had recently changed jobs and, by chance, met two former colleagues. We chatted. Our chat was brought to a brutal end when a car bomb exploded within metres of where we stood. Mentally I will carry that event with me forever.
There were two other car bombs that exploded that day in Dublin each within minutes of the others. I lost another acquaintance in one of them.
Even now, 49 years later, I still ask myself the unanswerable question: why was I spared when those about me were torn apart by the explosion? And I still relive the horror, and feel the palpable evil of it all! No cause, however just or noble will ever justify evil.
Military intelligence had infiltrated all of these groups, so ask yourself why they keep denying public enquiries and every day more of these serial killers get exposed as agents of turnStile government
Ian, yes i absolutely agree, but but in this case it isnt military or national preference, this is cold blood killers. They were absolute bastards. And the same to any Republican killers that targetted innocent protestants. Its barbaric and secterian and should never be attributed to the 'struggle'. Ive spent the past week writing comments praising Gusty Spence and David Ervine on these videos. They were good men, all about the struggle. These parasites were evil

Very interesting documentary. Just one thing regarding the research......boning knives are inches and steak knives are 10 inches, not the other way around. There are various sizes of course but generally steak knives are longer.
How can you tell an RUC officer is lying? He’s drawing breath into his lungs.
I bought a book with 3 books in one ..so to speak by Martin Dillon.
The Shankhill Butchers..
S,tone killer
And one more on the Troubles.
I have grown up in Derry and know about all of the madness and brutality.
The story laid up by Dillon was one of the
Most moving and disturbing books i have ever read.
Lennie Murphy lived by the sword and the people who killed him at least made it quick and decisive.
Ted McQuaid was my uncle, the RUC did nothing to ivestigate his murder. The picture Nolan showed is not my uncle. He was 25 years old when murdered
The opening sequence of the presenter walking the high street must have been hard work for the big man.
I'm 73 now.
*Derry
I allways spelled it the way you do "Shankhill" but see it is actually "Shankill" which is more appropriate, having the word "kill" in it.
Some hole. I reckon everyone knew.
You're definitely not from around here.
I agree. Impossible to infiltrate such a small and tight-knit unit, all known to eachother.
Infiltration? Be like trying to push a needle into a steel plate ! Totally impossible.
The Normans first conquered Ireland in 1169 and aside from a brief decade of independence during the 1640s Ireland formed an integral part of the English imperial system, until 1922 and the foundation of modern state.29 Dec 2020
How did the British treat the Irish?
The island became of interest to its neighbour for two main reasons: fertile and - from the English perspective - underexploited land, and Ireland's geographical
During the famine, a blight wiped out the potato crop.
Wow, and I thought Jewish people had had it tough !, no wonder Irish people still hold a big resentment towards the English.

The word "Taig " is a derogatory term for an Irish Catholic. It is mainly used by sectarian loyalists in Northern Ireland and Scotland. It has been used in sectarian slogans such as "Kill All Taigs" (KAT) and "All Taigs Are Targets" (ATAT).

Had Protestants been the victims of these animals there is no way these murders would have been allowed to continue.

How can a bloke called Murphy belong in a Loyalist paramilitary??
🇺🇲
I think it has been suggested that was a motivator to acting like he did. Being a protestant with an Irish name. As a kid he was supposedly bullied for that, and that pushed him towards the end result.
