Haha... that case looks awful, I think my lime green and orange borer riddled French Unic radio beats it for ugliness but it's a close second. I really can't wait to see you srip it back. The radio itself looks straightforward. If I was home I could laser cut a new back for you. This will be a very interesting project Manuel.
We know we are in a weird place when we start discussing which is uglier 😊 . Yes, this radio seems to be pretty straightforward other than the cabin work. I’ve got to find someone with a CNC cutter in Madeira because designing the back is actually quite easy, it’s cutting it that can be challenging.
You have definitely set a new standard for "Bad Cabinet". Of all the radios you have restored I'm sure you'll remember this one! Looking forward to learning more about cabinet restoration.
There's an old pun about selenium rectifiers that unfortunately only works in German. The German word for rectifier is "Gleichrichter". Due to their tendency to fail and produce the notorious ugly smell they were also known als "gleich riecht er" -> it'll reek soon. :-) The AEG variety is more prone to this phenomenon since, unlike the flat versions by Siemens and others, they get almost no cooling from the chassis.
I am a little bewildered about your rant. In your eyes, the colour may be ugly. In the eyes of the people who deliberately painted it this way, it was certainly not. You say you could not resist 'saving' this radio. But it has it's very own history of many years (I guess the painting is from the nineties). Is it not worth saving the shape it has been in for half of it's life?
WOW, Retro duck egg green , . . Nice Manuel ! Really looking forward to this one mate, I'm sure your cabinet restro will be right up there. Some of Dave's are pretty hard to beat though, the pressures ON ! Cheers
That, doing up a house and going on a cruise, malarky may have been a ruse. Either that or he is watching and commenting whilst away, I wonder how that's going down with the wife.
It goes without saying that this radio restoration is going to be a big project. But it is extremely satisfying bringing a classic old radio back to life...visually and electronically. Going to be an interesting restoration series to follow and I am looking forward to it.
What were they thinking? That colour! It will look so much better when you glue it back together and finish it in beige! 😂 Looks like you're in for a bit of work tracing through the wiring following the schematic, but I guess that sort of thing is what you do best! I see Dave is off on a cruise. Perhaps he'll stop by at Madeira and finish the cabinet for you. Cheers
How much was it you said the owner gave you to take it away? 😂 Serioulsy though, the speaker system on this is great. Done in a era when there was less focus on cost saving and a greater focus on quality and performance. That weird angle of that main speaker is, I believe, 100% orignal. I am guessing it was a way of getting a bigger speaker into a smaller space. When this is up and running it will have a really nice rich sound!!
Sunglasses needed! 😂 All those paper caps reminded me of my own foray into the Loewe-Opta radioverse (a Meteor 1781W). Dave Tipton did a 1781W last year but went the extra mile and replaced the caps in the IF cans (with NP0 ?) to get rid of the frequency drift as the set warms up. I wasn't that brave although maybe one day... 😊 I'll be interested to see if your Truxa suffers from the same issue. Good luck rescuing the cabinet. What was that previous owner thinking. 😨
Hi ! Yes, very funny case, but I have seen sometimes also in white ! (Not this model) Some people like a more "modern" look 🤔 And yes, would be a great work for David, he is our absolute woodworkking ! 👌 But let us see what You can do with ! Greetings Heinz
I love those old German radios. I have a Grundig Majestic model 1070 USA awaiting restoration. It has a big Bakelite plastic cabinet as opposed to the more common wood. Therefore the cabinet work will be a cinch. I’m curious to know where you found that chassis work frame? I could use that or one similar to it on future projects. Looking forward to the rest of this series. Take care!
Hahah.. I have Radione Jupiter on the bench, which spent 45 years in my father's workshop. He did welding, painting and vehicle repairs.. You can imagine the condition it is in..
Looks like you got a hold of a wildcat with this one M. I’m sure you won’t have a problem with the electronics, but will really have your hands full with the cabinetry. Looking forward to this one.
"Nice set shame about the taste". looking forward to your "Tiptonese" work. I have just obtained a fresh batch of very tired 40's and 50's radios and these need a lot of cabinet work. Looking for inspiration rather than perspiration and their expiration. Between yourself and Dave I am sure to get the guidance I need.
Wow, that's a hell of a thing! Chassis isn't as bad as I was expecting though. Looks like it was painted with a yard brush. By a blind 3 year old. Just why?
I think that colour is Teal? More suited for a handbag than a radio. Maybe this should be "The Teal Ordeal"? Bit of a bugger that the component layout doesn't seem to be available. I had a look myself but couldn't find one. Good look with the restoration!
Hopefully that thing was painted to match a color scheme in a room, rather than just being a random color choice. If it was painted to match sort of a Miami Beach art deco motif, it might have worked okay.
0:44 You realise there's probably a youtube video out there called "how to breathe a new life into an old radio" where you can watch the process of turning the original radio into this...
If it’s not too late to rescue this one,my aunt has a ladies hair salon she says it’s just the thing she has been looking for ‘for the girls to enjoy the latest tunes’. Maybe you can add some lights
Manuel such a color😱😱😱.The cabinet gonna take you a big time amount ...But nothing you can't cope with. By the way this could be a mid or low(access) radio?.We'll enjoy the repair.
Painted Radios dont always look bad. I agree that usually the painted radios look awful but there's a Graetz Melodia on RUclips thats been restored and sprayed black with proper car paint and lacquer .... and it actually looks astounding, very classy.
That sounds like my Graetz. If so it was a basket case when I got it. Im not a electronics engineer and the little I learned I learned from Manuels videos whilst parked up in my lorry at night. I am pretty good at the cabinets though as I used to be a car sprayer many years ago. Ive since restored a Telefunken Operette 7 in the same Raven black 2k paint and lacquer due to the same destroyed veener problem and used the same grille cloth as the original was again non existent. I quite like the black look but its incredibly labour intensive to get a flawless finish. Compared to the woodgrain. Ive also finished a Minerva Baby Minx, a Minerva Minx, an Imperial J407 but did those with their original wood finish. Ive also got a Nordmende Tannhauser, Philips Uranus 54 and Grundig 5088 here waiting for the same (original) treatment but I dont touch the cabinets until Im confident the radio is going to work flawlessly. I made that mistake on the Graetz .... I dont have the talent to get the AM bands working on it but FM, Bluetooth and other devices through the 3 pin DIN socket sound fabulous on it. (Resistors in cable as per your video Manuel 😉). Funny thing is I look for these painted radios because theyve invariably cheap as no one wants them and also because I know if I cant get the natural wood effects theyll look pleasing (to me anyway) in Black. I only buy ones with black dial glass too if the veneers shot and theyre going to be painted because a black radio with brown dial glass wouldnt look right. Anyway, If it is my Graetz youre talking about thsnk you for the compliment. As a total novice thats very encouraging.
@@electronicsoldandnew Thank you very much. Seeing as youre resposible for getting me hooked on these things that makes me feel vindicated, just wish I had 1/10th of your electronics knowledge.

Now that's hilarious. Well, if there's one radio that definitely deserves a Blue-tooth function, it's this one. 😁
Good luck with the project! 👍

I had a 1950s house with bathroom Fixtures same ugly turquoise color.
Yes, I seem to remember seeing kitchen utensils in colours from this palette 😊

I'd consider that color to be Turquoise. Normally a nice color but doesn't look right for a radio of any kind.
